'Dhoni barged on to the field, Kohli not banned': Virender Sehwag defends 'young player' Digvesh Rathi after suspension

(Image credit: BCCI/IPL) Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag has criticised the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for showing inconsistency in implementing disc ipl inary actions against players in the Indian Premier League (IPL), specifically highlighting the recent suspension of Lucknow Super Giants' Digvesh Singh Rathi while past incidents involving MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli resulted in lesser penalties. Digvesh Rathi, a leg-spinner for LSG, received a one-match suspension following an on-field altercation with Abhishek Sharma during their match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The incident marked Rathi's third Code of Conduct breach this IPL season. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The BCCI clarified that Rathi's suspension was the result of accumulated demerit points from multiple incidents throughout the season, not solely from the confrontation with Sharma. "I thought that the ban was a bit harsh. The boy is playing in his first year in the IPL. MS Dhoni had barged into the ground, he was not banned then. Virat Kohli has spoken to umpires in that tone, who knows how many times, he was also not banned. So, Digvesh Rathi could have been spared, because he is a young player, just coming into the scene, could have let that one go," Sehwag stated while speaking on Cricbuzz. The controversy stems from Rathi's previous infractions, including his trademark "notebook" celebrations after dismissing opposition batters, which contributed to his accumulation of demerit points. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo "This was his third Level 1 offence under Article 2.5 this season and hence, he has accumulated two Demerit Points, in addition to three Demerit Points he had accumulated earlier - One Demerit Point against Punjab Kings on April 01, 2025 and two Demerit Points against Mumbai Indians on April 04, 2025. In 2019, MS Dhoni entered the field during a match between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings to dispute a no-ball decision with umpires, resulting only in a 50% match fee fine. Similarly, Kohli, despite being involved in multiple on-field disagreements throughout his 18-year IPL career, has never faced suspension. While Rathi reached the five-point threshold that triggers an automatic suspension, neither Dhoni nor Kohli had accumulated enough points to warrant such action. The suspension meant Rathi missed Lucknow Super Giants' upcoming match against Gujarat Titans, while Abhishek received a fine and demerit points for his role in the altercation. ‘Dhoni barged into the ground but wasn't banned. Kohli argued with umpires many times': Sehwag questions Digvesh's ban
Former India opener Virender Sehwag blamed the BCCI for treating different players differently in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as far as punishments for breach of the Code of Conduct were concerned. Sehwag's observation came after Lucknow Super Giants leg-spinner Digvesh Singh Rathi was suspended for a match for his on-field scuffle with Abhishek Sharma during LSG's match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Abhishek was slapped with a fine and demerit points Sehwag said Digvesh's ban was harsh, as there have been past instances in the IPL involving big names like MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, but the BCCI never suspended them. "I thought that the ban was a bit harsh. The boy is playing in his first year in the IPL. MS Dhoni had barged into the ground, he was not banned then. Virat Kohli has spoken to umpires in that tone, who knows how many times, he was also not banned. So, Digvesh Rathi could have been spared, because he is a young player, just coming into the scene, could have let that one go," Sehwag said, speaking on Cricbuzz. In an IPL 2019 match between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings, MS Dhoni entered the ground during CSK's chase to argue with the on-field umpires over a controversial no-ball call. The CSK captain got away with a fine on 50% fine on his match fees. Kohli, who has been involved in quite a few on-field arguments throughout the 18 years of IPL, was never suspended. Sehwag, however, missed one crucial point. Digvesh Rathi was not suspended because of that one incident with Abhishek Sharma. The LSG leg-spinner had already accumulated three demerit points for earlier Code of Conduct breaches that were deemed as Level 1 offences, mainly due to his over-the-top tick-the-notebook celebrations after dismissing opposition batters. The on-field scuffle with Abhishek Sharma, which was once sparked because of his notebook celebration, was Digvesh's third offence of the season, which took his total demerit points tally this season to five. "This was his third Level 1 offence under Article 2.5 this season and hence, he has accumulated two Demerit Points, in addition to three Demerit Points he had accumulated earlier - One Demerit Point against Punjab Kings on April 01, 2025 and two Demerit Points against Mumbai Indians on April 04, 2025. As he now has Five Demerit Points this season - which result in a one-game suspension - Digvesh will now be suspended for LSG's next game - against Gujarat Titans on May 22, 2025 in Ahmedabad," BCCI said. Whereas in Dhoni and Kohli's case, their demerit points tally never reached five for the BCCI to officially suspend them.

Digvesh Rathi's suspension should be a wake-up call. T20 cricket is also a gentleman's game
As a cricket fan, yes, we love aggression on the field. The celebrations? Bring them on? But aggression that morphs into showboating or targeting — especially after being warned multiple times—no longer follows the sporting spirit. Lucknow Super Giants spinner Digvesh Rathi has earned himself a one-match suspension from the Indian Premier League Governing Council for repeated breach of the league's Code of Conduct. Rathi had already been penalised twice by the IPL for his 'notebook gesture' after taking wickets. His provocative move fell in the Level 1 offence under Article 2.5. Rathi was fined 25 per cent of his match fee after his first such celebration. The 25-year-old didn't learn from his mistake and repeated it, following which he was fined 50 per cent of his match fees. After the ban, many may point toward Virat Kohli, whose infamous celebrations have landed him in hot water. But did Kohli repeat the gesture or provocations in a particular IPL season or series after being warned and fined multiple times? Players who've crossed the line multiple times, like Harshit Rana, have also paid the price. Also read: A batting blitz, 'notebook' & chaos. When Rathi-Abhishek on-field antics became IPL's talking point Debut season Rathi's ignorance and indifference clearly indicate that he was actively testing the system. And arrogance like that should be met with consequences. During the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on 19 May, Rathi not only repeated his offence for the third time, but was also involved in a heated altercation with Sunrisers Hyderabad batter Abhishek Sharma, which prompted the umpires and other players to intervene. BCCI found Rathi guilty of breaching the IPL Code of Conduct for the third time this season. Hence, the spinner was not only fined 50 per cent match fee but was also handed a suspension from the franchise's next game against the Gujarat Titans. Sharma, too, was fined 25 per cent of his match fee. Notably, it is Rathi's debut season. He has so far picked 14 wickets in 12 matches. And he has won one 'Player of the Match' award against Mumbai Indians. But talent without temperament is a wasted gift. And being new to the league should be all the more reason to respect its code of conduct. Players cannot and should not believe that they can get away with in-your-face celebrations just because they're pumped or the cameras are rolling. Also read: Haryanvi IPL commentary is more crass than cricket. Don't waste the opportunity Know the boundary The IPL isn't just about performance. It's also about conduct, discipline, and knowing you're part of something bigger than just your moment in the spotlight. A little humility never hurt anyone. The suspension was necessary because it set a precedent. It should serve as a wake-up call — not just for Rathi, but for every young gun in the league. Celebrate your success. Jump, scream, high-five, chest-bump if you must. But also know where the boundary is. The IPL is watched by millions, including kids and teenagers who idolise these players. When the audience watches a bowler celebrating in someone's face and walking away despite the provocative behaviour, what message does it send out? That disrespect is part of the game? Style is more important than substance? Nope. Cricket, even in its T20 avatar, is still a gentleman's game — and that foundation has to be protected. Views are personal. (Edited by Theres Sudeep)

‘Show respect every player deserves': Shikhar Dhawan to Digvesh Singh after fight with Abhishesk Sharma results in ban
Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan said "learning the hard way" was the only way for Lucknow Super Giants leg-spinner Digvesh Singh Rathi. Digvesh was handed a one-match suspension by BCCI after he refused to do away with his "tick the notebook" celebration during the IPL. Dhawan hoped Digvesh would channel his energy in a better way in the near future. "Sometimes, learning the hard way is the only way the lesson sticks. Hopefully, this will be a turning point where Rathi learns to channel that fire more constructively and show the respect every player deserves on the field," Dhawan wrote on X. Digvesh, who was fined multiple times for his 'tick the notebook' celebration in his debut season, was involved in an ugly fight with Sunrisers Hyderabad opener Abhishek Sharma on Monday in Lucknow after he repeated the same celebration following the left-hander's dismissal. Abhishek was also reprimanded for the same incident and received a 25 percent fine along with one demerit point for what was his first offence. For Digvesh, this was his third Code of Conduct breach, and he has been suspended from LSG's next encounter against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad, having accumulated five demerit points after three separate offences of the same nature. "Digvesh Singh, Bowler, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) has been fined 50 per cent of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during his team's match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)," the IPL release stated. "As he now has Five Demerit Points this season - which result in a one-game suspension - Digvesh will now be suspended for LSG's next game - against Gujarat Titans on May 22, 2025 in Ahmedabad."For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee's decision is final and binding," it further stated. The 25-year-old has been LSG's only bright spot in an otherwise disastrous campaign, taking 14 wickets from 12 games at an economy rate of 8.18 per over. However, he appears to have learned little from previous incidents. His now customary "tick in notebook" celebration has gone viral on social media but match referees haven't taken too kindly to it. Most of the time, his celebrations come after being blasted by the opposition batters. In this instance, it came after India opener Abhishek had smashed 59 off 20 balls, including half a dozen sixes. LSG were completely outclassed by SRH and the defeat ended their chances of IPL qualification.

Digvesh Rathi faces one-match suspension, Abhishek Sharma penalised after heated exchange during LSG vs SRH match
Lucknow Super Giants spinner Digvesh Rathi has been suspended for one match following a heated exchange with Sunrisers Hyderabad batter Abhishek Sharma during Monday's match between the two teams. This is Rathi's third code of conduct violation; he had previously been fined for his extravagant celebrations. Meanwhile, Sharma has also been penalised 25% of his match fees as this is his first IPL code of conduct violation this season. According to the BCCI, Rathi will be unavailable to play in the Lucknow Super Giants' next match against the Gujarat Titans, and will also lose 50% of his match fees. "This was his third Level 1 offence under Article 2.5 this season and hence, he has accumulated Two Demerit Points, in addition to Three Demerit Points he had accumulated earlier - One Demerit Point against Punjab Kings on April 01, 2025 and Two Demerit Points against Mumbai Indians on April 04, 2025." a BCCI release on Rathi's suspension read. "As he now has Five Demerit Points this season - which result in a one-game suspension - Digvesh will now be suspended for LSG's next game - against Gujarat Titans on May 22, 2025 in Ahmedabad." it further read. There was a heated exchange between Rathi and Sharma after the spinner dismissed the SRH batter during the eighth over of the match. Sharma had already caused significant damage by then with his 59-run knock (off 20 balls), but Rathi's signature notebook celebration as he walked back to the pavilion caused Sharma to lose his cool. The two players exchanged a few words and their argument looked heated before the umpires eventually stepped in. However, the matter didn't end there, as Abhishek Sharma could be seen having a lengthy discussion with LSG assistant coach Vijay Dahiya during the post-match handshakes. Shortly afterwards, Abhishek and Digvesh could be seen exchanging a few more words before Dahiya asked Abhishek to move on.
