5,000 gifted children to benefit from SIET workshops for them

m In a step towards nurturing the talents of gifted children in the project of the General Education department, the State Institute of Educational Technology (SIET) will conduct for them a workshop that integrates STEM with robotics and art. The STREAM (where R has been adapted for robotics and A stands for art) workshop, to be organised with academic support from the Centre for Learning Engineering and Sustainability Education, University of Kerala, will be held in the 41 educational districts in the State from next month as part of the SIET's Talent Lab project. Nearly 5,000 gifted children – 40 each from classes VIII, IX, and X in each educational district - will attend the workshop that will adhere to a seven-day module founded on value-creation pedagogy. This requires the projects done by children to have a societal impact, says SIET Director B. Aburaj. Trained resource persons will visit each of the educational districts and take classes for the gifted children. Initially, the resource persons will introduce students to basic concepts such as Newton's laws of motion or force theories through projects and activities such as solar cars or rocket propulsion as part of the curriculum prepared by the Centre for Learning Engineering and Sustainability Education. Next they will be guided on basics of electronics such as sensors, microprocessors, capacitors, circuit board, soldering, and such. They will then be introduced to software and programming through languages such as Python so as to make these components functional through commands. Following introduction to topics such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, Internet of Things (IoT), and Artificial Intelligence of Things (AioT), students will have to identify problems in the places they live in, be it potholes on road, waste management, water overflow and wastage and devise solutions for them through projects such as production management, home automation, hydro height gauge, or electric nose. The presentation of students' projects will be through art forms such as theatre, song, or dance. Students will be trained in this aspect too. 'Art is an integral component of the workshop with the goal of developing students' sense of social responsibility and empathy and aesthetic sense as part of the value-creation pedagogy. 'The premise is that students can understand society if they understand art. We want to nurture scientists and technology experts with social responsibility and aesthetic sense,' says Mr. Aburaj. The workshop is expected to be completed for all gifted students by December.
