Fahmi covers relocation costs for Pantai Dalam fire victims

KUALA LUMPUR: Lembah Pantai MP Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has pledged to cover the relocation costs for 14 families displaced by a recent fire in Pantai Dalam, moving them into Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) People's Housing Project (PPR) units as temporary accommodation. He said the arrangements were finalised following discussions with Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa and Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Dr Maimunah Mohd Sharif. "All requirements for the relocation have been approved. I visited the 14 families currently staying at the temporary relief centre. Alhamdulillah, in a short time, Dr Zaliha and Datuk Seri Maimunah approved their move into transit homes for those eligible. "Following the approval, my office also received cash contributions from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), which will be distributed to the affected families," he said during his speech at the Arts and Culture Promotion Programme at PPR Kerinchi today. The fire, which broke out around 11pm on Aug 8, destroyed 14 squatter houses and four shop lots, including Mydin Mart and Pasaraya Karnival. Fahmi said DBKL would cover six months' rent for the families, while his office would absorb the cost of the deposits. "I will cover all deposits imposed by DBKL so the families will not need to pay anything. We want to help them rebuild their lives in a supportive environment after their homes were destroyed in the fire," he added.

Fahmi: Do not fear flying the Jalur Gemilang

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians should fly the Jalur Gemilang proudly and without fear, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. "Do not be afraid to put up the Jalur Gemilang. "Some are worried because of the actions of a handful, a small group of individuals who are trying to inflame sentiment, taking advantage of a chaotic situation trying to scare people," he said. Fahmi's comments come amid public anger after a school in Negri Sembilan and a shop in Penang had flown the flag upside-down. Teregganu Umno Youth recently apologised after it caught flak for using a Jalur Gemilang with the incorrect number of stripes in a graphic. Fahmi assured that Malaysia was a nation of laws and any violations would be dealt with accordingly. "Don't take action on the police's behalf. The police will. Don't prosecute on behalf of the Attorney-General's Chambers (A-GC), A-GC will. Don't act for the judge, the judge will decide," he said in his speech at the Arts and Culture Promotion Programme at PPR Kerinchi. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had said recently that bullying, intimidation, incitement — including racism — will not be tolerated and strict action will be taken against offenders. Pang Chin Tian, 59, the Penang shopowner who allegedly flew the Jalur Gemilang upside-down, has been the main lightning rod for the anger over the issue. On Aug 12, Pang put up a larger flag outside his shop after apologising for the mistake. However, Pang said he was still a little scared to put up the Jalur Gemilang. Last Thursday, Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, who has been vocal in his displeasure over the upside-down Jalur Gemilang, led more than 300 supporters from Umno, Parti Pribumi Bersatu (Bersatu) and Pas on a 1.4km march to protest at Pang's store. After the march, police have summoned Dr Akmal to record his statement.
