Chennai: The DMK govt has retrieved 7,500 acres of encroached temple land worth 7,671 crore in the last four years. The govt has also spent 1,700 crore for renovation of 19 major temples under an integrated masterplan and has performed consecration for more than 2900 temples, according to an official press release. The statement, listing out the achievements of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department, said apart from the retrieval of the encroached lands, about 2 lakh acres of temple lands were scientifically surveyed and were brought under protection by earmarking their boundaries. The dept has also performed consecration of more than 2,900 temples which included 119 temples which never had the ceremony done in several decades. The 3,000th consecration under DMK govt will be performed at Arulmigu Agneeswaraswamy temple in Thirupugalur on June 5, the statement said. Renovation work was undertaken in 274 temples which were more than 1,000 years old at a cost of 429 crores. Among the ongoing projects, renovation works are being carried out at 25,813 temples at a cost of 5,970 crore. An equal number of village temples have been renovated during the four years. The HR and CE dept was also working on construction of a manimandapam for Sangam era poet Avvayar at Thulasiapattinam near Vedaranyam in Nagappattinam district and a temple made of granite for saint poet Thiruvalluvar at Mylapore.

Timely action by TN Idol Wing CID prevents auction of Antique idol in Europe

Chennai, May 6 (UNI) Timely action taken by the Idol Wing CID of the Tamil Nadu police prevented the auction of a priceless antique metal idol in the Netherlands (Europe). An official release here said the Kannappa Nayanar metal idol was stolen from Arulmigu Agneeswaraswamy temple at Thirupugalur in Nagapattinam district 15 years ago by unknown culprits. After registering a case in Augut 2010, the Idol Wing CID during elaborate investigations received information that the idol was kept at The European Fine Art Exhibition-2025, held at Maastricht, the Netherlands for auction. Immediately, the Idol Wing CID took up with the police officials of the Netherlands and officers of Archaeological Survey of India to stop the auction. Due to this timely action, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Netherlands and Dutch, took custody of Kannappa Nayanar Idol on March 23, 2025. Auction of idol stolen from Nagapattinam temple stopped in Netherlands

The Idol Wing CID of the Tamil Nadu police have stopped the auction of an idol reported stolen from a temple in Nagapattinam 15 years ago. According to an official release, the Kannappa Nayanar metal idol was stolen from Arulmigu Agneeswaraswamy temple at Thirupugalur in Nagapattinam district in 2010 by unidentified persons. A case was registered by the Thittachery police in this regard. During the course of ongoing investigation, police received an input that the idol was kept at the European Fine Art Exhibition, 2025, held at Maastricht in the Netherlands for auction. Acting on the input, investigators took up the matter with their counterpart in the Netherlands and officers of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to stop the auction of the idol. Due to the timely intervention, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Netherlands, took custody of Kannappa Nayanar idol on March 23, 2025. Legal procedures were initiated to repatriate the idol from the Netherlands to India, the release said.
