‘Beach Mode On': Internet Reacts To Bengaluru Man Driving To Work ‘Underwater'
Last Updated: A Bengaluru-based entrepreneur recently shared a photo of his car submerged in floodwater. Heavy rains last week caused severe flooding across Bengaluru, resulting in widespread waterlogging that halted traffic and stranded countless commuters. The chaos reignited concerns about the inadequate infrastructure of India's Silicon Valley. Arun Vinayak, a local entrepreneur and co-founder of an energy startup, shared a photo of his car partially submerged in water. With a touch of humour, he remarked that to live and work in India, your car, home and office should be as waterproof as IP67-certified gadgets. Despite the floods, many employees in Bengaluru were expected to report to work. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Vinayak wrote, 'Building hardware in India is even harder if you have to make your office and cars and homes IP67." Another suggested, 'Throw a few fish in there and get a pedicure by the time you reach." 'What you actually need is a Kayak," a comment read. An individual stated, 'All these inefficiencies in our society are making our engineering expensive, too tiresome & complex. As an engineer, it feels good, as a citizen, we pay the price for this over-optimisation despite the taxes paid." Another jokingly mentioned, 'Pradhan mantri ghar ghar submarine yojana." Someone added, 'When one dreams to serve the nation after passing the best IIT Computer Science. This is what one gets in Bangalore or Mumbai." Due to heavy rains, floodwaters entered many homes across Bengaluru, causing damage to furniture, electrical appliances and personal belongings. In response, local authorities stepped in promptly to relocate affected families to safer shelters. First Published: May 27, 2025, 15:19 IST

‘Battery ok, engineers not': Bengaluru CEO's 'IP67' quip over flooded car goes viral
Credit: X BENGALURU: A spell of heavy rain was all it took to send parts of India's Silicon Valley 'underwater' on Tuesday, as Bengaluru witnessed widespread waterlogging that disrupted traffic, stranded office-goers and sparked fresh concerns over the city's long-standing infrastructure woes. A car belonging to Arun Vinayak, co-founder of a local energy startup, was seen nearly submerged in waters. He shared an image of his waterlogged vehicle on X (formerly Twitter), joking that to work in India, 'your office, home and car need to be IP67 certified'—a nod to the international waterproofing standard used in electronics. His sardonic remark — "#underwater #batteryok #engineersnotok" — quickly resonated with other city dwellers grappling with the downpour. Bengaluru rain The rain, averaging 42.7mm across Bengaluru, exposed the fragile state of its drainage network. Roads turned into streams, and office commuters navigated knee-deep water in the absence of a viable public warning or mitigation system. Yet, while much of the city reeled under water, one area stood out. RR Nagar zone — which recorded a staggering 150mm of rainfall overnight, the highest in 10 years — reported minimal flooding. According to officials from the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), the credit lies with preventive measures: timely cleaning of stormwater drains, efficient garbage removal, and a well-coordinated flood management plan. 'The Vrishabhavathi Valley passes through this region, making it prone to flooding,' a BBMP official said. 'But regular maintenance and a system of 42 interlinked lakes helped us avoid the worst.' The contrast has renewed debate over the need for sustainable urban planning. Experts have repeatedly warned that Bengaluru's unchecked construction, often near lakes and in low-lying areas, has left it vulnerable to even moderate rain.

Bengaluru Rains: Viral 'IP67' Social Media Post Highlights City's Urban Flooding Crisis
In many Indian metropolitan cities, even a brief 10-minute spell of rain is enough to cause severe waterlogging, creating major hurdles for daily office commuters. The recurring issue is often blamed on poor urban planning and inadequate drainage systems, which fail to cope with sudden downpours, leading to traffic snarls and disrupted routines. Bengaluru is the latest city to suffer this season, with intense rainfall leaving several areas submerged and causing widespread disruption to daily life. Despite the chaos, many working professionals are still expected to brave the flooded roads and stalled traffic to report to their offices, highlighting the city's perennial struggle with urban planning and water management issues. Arun Vinayak, a Bengaluru resident and co-founder of Exponent Energy, was among those severely affected, encountering a surreal scene on his commute: his car was submerged underwater, and water was flowing inside his car. Sharing this pathetic situation with the social media users, he posted a photo of his waterlogged vehicle on his X account, saying, "Building hardware in India is even harder if you have to make your office and cars and homes IP67. #underwater #batteryok #engineersnotok en route to work today." "IP67" indicates a device's protection against solid objects and liquids. The first digit "6" signifies full protection against dust and solid particles, ensuring no internal contamination. The second digit "7" means the device can withstand temporary immersion in water. The viral post has got over 60000 views, and many social media users are commenting on it. "Throw a few fish in there and get a pedicure by the time you reach," one unser commented humorously. "This happened in Mumbai in 2005; people got permanently handicapped or even lost their lives due to this exact occurrence," wrote another user remembering the Mumbai floods. "Bengaluru needed a car-cum-boat now. IT companies should think of a new home now," commented a third user, suggesting that the IT companies should relocate to somewhere else.

Bengaluru flooded again: Potholes deepen, memes take over the internet
Bengaluru sank once again under heavy rain this week, triggering flash floods, tragic deaths, and total civic chaos. But as roads turned into rivers and vehicles into vessels, social media platforms were flooded with humorous yet pointed commentary capturing the grim reality of the IT hub's collapsing infrastructure. The rains, which began over last weekend, have already claimed five lives. Two people died due to electrocution, while a woman lost her life after a compound wall collapsed on her. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for Karnataka on May 20, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in Bengaluru and other parts of the state. Despite the seriousness of the situation, online users turned their anger into viral memes and sharp posts. One viral post on X read: '#BengaluruRains leave city panting. #Gurgaon #Gurugram and #Bengaluru, the cyber capitals of India, are an infrastructural mess and it takes a single rain to wash down mask of perfection in both cities (sic).' Another user said, 'I pay my taxes and do not avail any of the freebies from the govt. The least I expect in return is a city which doesn't crumble at the first rains even before the monsoon sets in." I pay my taxes and do not avail any of the freebies from the govt . Visuals circulating online showed stranded commuters, flooded homes, and overwhelmed drainage systems. The IMD forecast predicts no relief for the city, with continued rain expected over the next two days. 'Partly cloudy sky with possibility of heavy rain or thunderstorm,' the department noted in its latest update. Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Kolar, Belagavi, and Bagalkot are among the areas on alert. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the city had recorded 104 mm of rainfall, much higher than anticipated. In addition, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, speaking from the BBMP war room, said that flood mitigation efforts are ongoing. 'We had identified 210 flood-prone areas in the city. We have resolved issues in 166 of them. Work is ongoing in 24 areas, and action will soon start in the remaining 20,' he told news agency ANI. Shivakumar added that 197 km of stormwater drains have been built and ₹2,000 crore allocated for drainage infrastructure. Of 132 trouble spots identified by traffic police, 82 have been fixed, and the rest are under review.

Bengaluru entrepreneur finds ankle-deep water inside car, drives anyway to office amid heavy rainfall
As heavy Bengaluru rains cause severe waterlogging and traffic snags across the city, an entrepreneur decided to brave it all and drive away in his car with ankle-deep water. In a now-viral post, the Bengaluru-based entrepreneur Arun Vinayak shared a picture of his car's footwell and said, 'Building hardware in India is even harder if you have to make your office, cars and homes IP67,' highlighting the absurdity of needing to waterproof not just devices. Netizens found it hilarious and filled Vinayak's comment section with jokes about what his water-logged car could instead be. 'Dudes got a car with beach mode,' a social media user joked. Another suggested that he 'throw in some fish and make it a leg spa day.' 'This is one of the steps in a pedicure,' added a user. One user sarcastically said, 'Kya sir. India is offering free cleaning of office house and car , that too with water. What else can we want?' A few users said that he actually needs to have a boat in Bengaluru, not a car. 'Use boats instead of cars near Bengaluru Port,' said a user. Another said, 'What you actually need, is a Kayak.' 'You in B'lore buddy! just wing it, like everything else,' suggested another user. 'Pradhan mantri ghar ghar submarine yojana,' joked a user. However, some users were not ready to joke about the issue and highlighted a lack of proper drainage and the government's inefficiencies in flood-like situations in the city. 'True, because laying a drainage pipe is god's work that humans cannot do,' a user said. 'All these inefficiencies in our society is making our engineering expensive, too tiresome & complex. As an engineer, it feels good, as a citizen we pay the price for this over-optimisation despite the taxes paid,' added another user. 'These are times when I feel better about my choice to walk to office,' added another user. The India Meteorological Department said there will be more rain in Karnataka's capital over the next five days. The weather agency has also issued a red alert for Karnataka, warning against extremely heavy rain on Tuesday. It warned against heavy showers in Bagalkot, Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Koppal, Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural and Kolar cities today. According to IMD's weather report, isolated places in Karnataka will witness 'extremely heavy rainfall' on 20 and 21 May. The Met Department also forecasted isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over Karnataka until May 25.
