NYC teachers' union boss Mike Mulgrew ousts rivals, critics from UTF payroll in ‘purge'

City teachers union President Mike Mulgrew has launched a 'purge'' at UFT headquarters — firing open rivals and also staffers even suspected of being critical of him, sources said. Amy Arundell, a longtime United Federation of Teachers staffer and former Mulgrew ally who recently challenged him for the presidency and lost, was one of five union activists who recently got the boot. Arundell told The Post she was informed late last week that she was off the payroll effective Aug. 31, while the UFT immediately disabled her union email and phone. 4 Amy Arundell was one of five union activists who recently got the boot. 'I consider it a purge,' siad Arundell, 56, a city Department of Education teacher for 34 years and a paid union staffer for 21 years. 'Mulgrew is a very spiteful man.' While Arundell anticipated she might get the ax for challenging Mulgrew in the recent union election, she was shocked that others were removed from the union payroll as well. 'He should manage the union with union values,' said Arundell — who filed a police report earlier this month after her image and the message, 'Piss on My Face' were put on laminated cards that were then placed in urinals at the UFT's Broadway headquarters during a delegate assembly meeting. Meanwhile, Migda Rodriguez, vice chairwoman of the union's chapter representing paraprofessionals, also lost her salaried position. She had run for an executive position on Arundell's A Better Contract slate but lost. 4 Arundell told The Post she was informed late last week that she was off the payroll effective Aug. 31, while the UFT immediately disabled her union email and phone. Obtained by The NY Post Rodriguez still represents the paraprofessionals and slammed Mulgrew and his 'Unity Caucus' for her ouster. 'It's retaliation to the fullest. It's wrong,' Rodriguez said. She said her combined Department of Education and union salary is $80,000 and that it will likely now be halved. 4 While Arundell anticipated she might get the ax for challenging Mulgrew in the recent union election, she was shocked that others were removed from the union payroll as well. Stephen Yang Under the union contract, teachers and other educators get 'leave time' from their school jobs to work for the union. Arundell, Rodriguez and others will get reassigned to a school after losing their paid union staff job. The union group Fix Para Pay issued a statement condemning Rodriguez's termination. 'Migda wasn't fired for doing anything wrong. She was fired for doing everything right, for advocating fiercely for paras, for demanding a living wage, and for refusing to play politics with our livelihoods,' the group said. 4 Arundell, Rodriguez and others will get reassigned to a school after losing their paid union staff job. James Keivom 'She is now part of the `UFT 5′, a group of educators and unionists terminated for choosing principle over party. … This move is not only disrespectful to Migda, it may be a direct violation of the UFT constitution and a slap in the face to every member who believes in a democratic union.' Ashley Rzonca, the union's District 30 representative in Queens, also confirmed she got the boot. She had sent a letter to her supervisor complaining about 'bullying and harassing behavior' from a fellow employee in the UFT 's Queens Borough Office, where she worked. Every morning, the NY POSTcast offers a deep dive into the headlines with the Post's signature mix of politics, business, pop culture, true crime and everything in between. Subscribe here! Rzonca said she did not oppose Mulgrew's re-election, but there was concern that some of the 42 school union chapter leaders she oversaw did. She claimed no major issues were raised about her job performance. Mulgrew, responding to The Post through a union rep, declined to discuss the reasons for the dismissals. 'We do not comment on individual personnel decisions. As part of its annual organizational assessment, the UFT reviews the status of individuals who are on leave from their schools to work at the union,' the representative said. 'Those whose leaves [leave time to work for the union] are not renewed are thanked for their service and can return to their regular school assignment.'

Henry Arundell returns to England squad

Arundell, who also qualified for Wales and Scotland, scored a memorable try with his very first touch as an England player when he came off the bench against Australia in 2022. After Eddie Jones was fired as England head coach, Arundell continued to appear under Borthwick through the 2023 Six Nations. When London Irish went into administration, there was no shortage of interest in Arundell but he chose to sign for French big spenders Racing 92. Borthwick was given special dispensation to pick him as well as Toulouse's Jack Willis for the 2023 World Cup and Arundell scored a record-equalling five tries against Chile in a pool stage match. Despite that feat, Arundell did not feature again until the bronze-medal match against Argentina, which proved to be his last act in an England shirt as pressure from Premiership Rugby forced the Rugby Football Union to close its loophole on selecting overseas players. However with Arundell set to join Bath this summer, Borthwick has been able to add the 22-year-old to his training squad with England facing a France XV at Twickenham on June 21 before their tour of Argentina and the United States. Arundell returns to a much-changed England side both in terms of personnel and philosophy. At the 2023 World Cup, England relied upon their wings to predominantly chase high balls, which did not suit his skillset. Despite a great start to life in France where he scored a hat-trick on his debut, his experience with Racing 92 has not always been a happy one and at points this season he looked shorn of the confidence he possessed three years ago. Arundell faces strong competition for places in the England back three spots with Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, Cadan Murley, Ollie Sleightholme and Tom Roebuck already included in a training squad which does not feature any players from Bath or Leicester as well as England's Lions contingent.

Landmark Federation Queen Anne home could be just what the doctor ordered

A landmark heritage residence that started life as a grand doctor's home has hit the market for the first time in almost half a century. Buyers have a chance to choose their own adventure at 'Glenora', a two-storey Federation Queen Anne house rich in Art Nouveau features. The dual functionality of 1 Bromfield St, Colac, as both a private home and business premises has endured since it was built in 1907 and remains one of the property's most valuable assets. RELATED: Geelong mansion linked to Melbourne Cup hits market Buyer to breathe new life into Geelong West cottage What $1m will buy you across Australia Charles Stewart, Colac agent Stephen Lugg said the Warbuton Pierre Knights-designed home was a shining example of the architecture of the time. A striking rounded entrance is one of its most notable features of the four-bedroom house, which retains original decorative window mouldings and stylised wooden fretwork. Mr Lugg said it was presented in impeccable condition. 'As one of Colac's most recognisable and iconic properties, the landmark offers both striking architecture and a commanding presence, presenting a range of opportunities for both residential and commercial use,' he said. The property, which occupies a 658sq m block on the corner of Corangamite St in the heart of Colac, is zoned Commercial One. The house was originally built for Dr Richard Horace Gibbs who operated a private hospital nearby in Connor St. Numerous other doctors later took up occupancy before it was converted into a guesthouse in 1934. From 1942, the Post Master General's department leased the building for the district engineer and in 1980 legal practice Arundell, Murray and Ryan moved in. A formal entry with timber panelling and intricate leadlight windows is a highlight of the ground floor, which is currently divided into five office spaces. Upstairs, there's a four-bedroom residence with a formal lounge and a separate open-plan kitchen and dining area adjoining another sitting room. Another large conference room could serve as an additional living space, while balconies to the front and rear of the house provides options for outdoor entertaining.

Ex-UFT borough official challenging union chief Michael Mulgrew for top spot

A former teachers union borough official is charting a path back to the upper ranks — challenging United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew for the top spot. Amy Arundell was removed on October 2023 from her position as the representative for Queens after trying to soften a union resolution supporting Israel, as first reported by the Daily News. On Monday, Arundell will announce her bid for teachers union president in this spring's elections with A Better Contract — one of two slates mounting a challenge to Mulgrew's Unity caucus. A Better Contract is running on a platform including premium-free healthcare, raises that keep pace with the cost of living, pension reform, and being responsive to members. In a press release, the slate insisted Arundell's campaign be seen as an indictment of the union's current leadership. 'I have been an employee of the UFT for 21 years, and this wouldn't have been something I would've thought of doing,' Arundell said in an exclusive interview with The News. 'The culture of the UFT is you get picked by leadership, leadership decides who they think would be the next appropriate president — and I played by those rules.' 'But members are increasingly dissatisfied with a lot of the decisions that have been made by the UFT,' she added. 'And it became harder and harder to look people in the face and tell them, 'This was a good thing.'' Mulgrew, the UFT president since 2009, has won five consecutive elections — most recently in 2022. But after a lower-than-expected margin of victory last referendum, his challengers say he could be vulnerable in this year's contest. Arundell herself worked on Mulgrew's campaign. 'The UFT is a democratic organization that thrives on a vigorous exchange of ideas,' read a statement from LeRoy Barr, chair of the Unity caucus, on the upcoming elections. 'Unity has a track record of improving the lives of UFT members and so we look forward to the campaign.' Unity has been in power for more than 60 years. Arundell oversaw all UFT business in Queens from 2017 until her sudden removal. Just days after Oct. 7, 2023, she privately proposed changes to a UFT resolution supporting Israel, including a suggestion to drop the word 'terrorist' to describe the Hamas attack. Arundell explained she did not want to debate if Hamas was a terrorist organization, but to recognize that not all of the members she represented agreed with that statement — and avoid a public argument that she said ensued during the resolution vote. 'When I was reassigned, I did not know why. I was never told. And to this day, they have never actually told me,' Arundell said. 'I don't pretend I believe things I don't believe, but I also don't use my position as a representative for the UFT to push a personal agenda.' Arundell did not challenge the UFT's decision to remove her, but told The News she thinks it was unfair, arguing it's one of a series of 'bad decisions' that did not consider the membership's point of view. Thousands of members came to Arundell's defense in a petition after her removal. The union president hopeful raised concerns about an effort to switch retired teachers onto private healthcare, mayoral control of public schools, and 'everybody deciding how people should teach except teachers.' 'I held a meeting with 600 people to answer questions about healthcare,' Arundell said of the Medicare Advantage plan. 'I answered questions based on what I was told by leadership. And I will say now, I do not believe as a staff person at the UFT, I was told the truth about all the implications of this decision. And that's embarrassing to me.' Mulgrew has since dropped his support for Medicare Advantage. Most recently, Arundell questioned Mulgrew's attempt to secure raises for underpaid paraprofessionals through legislation, outside of the typical contract negotiation process. While she agreed the special education staffers are overdue for a raise, she said she worried what precedent it would set to sidestep the city's longstanding practice of reaching a deal with one union, setting a pattern for all other contracts during a round of bargaining. 'Making 'pattern bargaining' the enemy is unbelievable to me, because its history is rooted in the idea that unions will not compete with one another, that we are one labor movement, and that we are stronger when we are together,' Arundell said. The nomination process closes next month. The UFT will mail ballots to members and count votes on May 29. Members elected president and other officers will serve three-year terms, effective this summer.

Bath sign England back Arundell from next season

Bath have signed England back Henry Arundell from French club Racing 92 on a three-year deal starting from the 2025-26 season. The 22-year-old has been capped 10 times by his country but has not played for England since the World Cup in 2023, having moved to France following the collapse of his previous club London Irish. Rugby Football Union rules do not allow English players based abroad to play for the national side. Arundell, who can play on the wing or at full-back, has scored 13 tries in 30 appearances for Racing so far, including a hat-trick on his Top 14 debut against Toulon. "Joining Bath will be a very special occasion for both myself and my family," said Arundell, who grew up in the area. "We've been Bath fans for generations - ever since my grandparents - and growing up I spent many years in the stands supporting the team. "Now, to potentially have the opportunity to wear a Bath rugby shirt is incredibly exciting. The team is in a fantastic place right now, with a brilliant culture, and I'm confident we can create some amazing memories over the next few years." Bath sign Pumas back Carreras from Gloucester Exeter hooker Frost to move to Bath in summer England centre Lawrence signs 'long-term' Bath deal Arundell, who will become eligible to play for England again on his return to the Premiership, has scored seven tries in his international career so far, including a joint-record of five in a single match on his World Cup debut against Chile in September 2023. He began his career in London Irish's academy, and went on to score 10 tries in 23 senior appearances for the side before the club folded at the end of the 2022-23 campaign. "Henry has some world-class attributes, more specifically his speed and try-scoring ability," Bath head of rugby Johann van Graan said. "Henry made it very clear when we spoke that he wants to improve as a player and I believe that Bath is the club to do that. "His willingness to learn, grow and become better fits in well with what we, as a group of players, coaches and staff are all working towards on our journey together." Arundell becomes the second high-profile signing for Bath for next season in the space of two days, with Gloucester and Argentina full-back Santiago Carreras having also agreed terms to move to the Recreation Ground. The current Premiership league leaders have also signed hooker Dan Frost from Exeter and scrum-half Bernard van der Linde from South African side Bulls. Additionally, England centre Ollie Lawrence has recently agreed new terms to stay at the club, along with prop Beno Obano and second row Quinn Roux.
