Toys from trash

Arvind Gupta folds a sheet of paper to the right and then to the left, and comes up with a design that shows the rhombus, diagonals, and the mathematical rules hidden within it. For the Padma Shri awardee and educator, the tetra packs, toothpaste tubes, matchboxes, and every other object we label trash are treasures that can ignite the spark of curiosity and scientific temper in young minds. For more than four decades, he has been converting everyday trash into magical toys for children. It is his way of making science interesting and accessible to every child in India and beyond, he says. After graduating from IIT Kanpur, Gupta started working at TELCO where he found the monotonous work in the mass production line suffocating . He took a break and went to work at the Hoshangabad Science teaching program and later worked with architect Laurie Baker. Travelling across India, writing books, 24 so far, and posting tutorial videos on YouTube, he says, it is his calling to ensure books and toys are easily accessible to children and tutors anywhere. 'Children from poor backgrounds do not have access to expensive materials like glassware, burettes, pipettes; it made me think about toys for them,' says Gupta, who was at the Ashoka University recently for the Lodha Genius program, an initiative that brings together children between 14 and 17 years for guidance in science and technology by eminent people. Over 12 crore children have watched Gupta's videos available in Tamil, Punjabi, Telugu, Hindi, and English. It has helped to create an inclusive space for children, parents, and tutors. Gupta believes toys are meant to be brokenby kids. 'A good toy design is one that .can be dissembled and rearranged to its original form,' he says. He recalls his childhood when his mother let him be and he began collecting cigarette packets, bottle caps, and matchboxes for experiments. Affordability and environment protection are the two key factors that motivate him to make toys from trash. Instead of using high-end materials for teaching children, he uses plastic bottles to showcase hundreds of experiments and instills a sense of environmental sensibility in them. A cancer survivor, Gupta spends time travelling across the country to spread knowledge and translating his own books and those by others on science experiments, biographies of scientists, children's literature into Hindi and Marathi. A recipient of 22 awards, Gupta says when a child learns something new, the gleam in their eyes gives him most satisfaction.

J-K: Civilian areas in Jammu city suffer significant damage due to shelling by Pakistan

Jammu (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], May 10 (ANI): Pakistan carried out cross-border shelling on Saturday morning, causing significant damage to civilian areas in Jammu city and heightening fears among residents. BJP MLA from Jammu West, Arvind Gupta, advised people to sleep on the ground floor. Arvind Gupta said, 'The shelling started at 4 am. At around 5.40 am, I was on the first floor of my house, which is around 50 metres from here. There was a sudden impact, I was a little scared. Three people were injured in the shelling.' He further said that Pakistan has no guts to have a direct fight with the Indian Army so it has started attacking the residential areas. 'The only reason behind the attack on residential areas is to cause panic in Jammu City. I appeal to the people not to gather wherever anything like this happens so that nothing untoward happens there if an attack happens there again. People should sleep on the ground floor. Rajouri ADC too lost his life in the night,' he said. Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed grief on the demise of J&K Administration Services officer Raj Kumar Thappa. The J-K CM offered his condolences to Thappa who lost his life aftern his home was targeted due to shelling from Pakistan in Rajouri. 'Devastating news from Rajouri. We have lost a dedicated officer of the J&K Administration Services. Just yesterday he was accompanying the Deputy CM around the district & attended the online meeting I chaired. Today the residence of the officer was hit by Pak shelling as they targeted Rajouri town killing our Additional District Development Commissioner Raj Kumar Thappa. I've no words to express my shock & sadness at this terrible loss of life. May his soul rest in peace', Omar Abdiullah's official 'X' post read. Civilian areas in Jammu's Rajouri district suffered damage due to shelling by Pakistan. A series of explosions damaged several houses and properties across the region, triggering panic among residents. According to locals, smoke rose after loud explosions were reported in Rajouri. 'One injured person has been brought here. Doctors and the entire team are ready. His treatment began immediately,' said Farukh Ahmed Wani, the security in-charge at the hospital. Authorities confirmed that the injured civilian was transported to the hospital shortly after the shelling. Strikes occurred near the Aap Shambhu Temple in Rajouri, prompting Jammu Police and other agencies to recover projectile fragments from the site. At least four airbases in Pakistan were hit by Indian strikes in the early hours of Saturday, top government sources said, as tensions between the two countries continue to escalate. India launched the retaliatory strikes immediately after Pakistan attacked 26 locations across India on Saturday, the sources told ANI. Intermittent firing is still going on at several places along the Line of Control (LoC). (ANI)

Amid India-Pakistan strain, border villagers share worry: Loud explosion then…

Schools remained closed, and so did most businesses, as people in the border districts woke up to a tense Saturday morning, hung heavy with the wail of air raid sirens and the foreboding of what the day would bring. People in several border districts of Punjab, Rajasthan, and Jammu and Kashmir spent an anxious night as authorities enforced a complete blackout for the second consecutive day amid heightened tensions with Pakistan. People residing near the border areas narrated their terrifying experiences to news agency ANI. A local from Rajasthan's Barmer said: 'About 5:15 in the morning, we heard some sound, and several things, like drones, were seen in the sky. When we came, we found this debris on the road...' Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Jammu West, Arvind Gupta, said: "...Around 5.40 am, I was on the first floor of my house, which is around 50 metres from here. There was a sudden impact, I was a little scared. Within 15-20 minutes, I came to know about here. We came has no guts to have a direct fight with our Army. A local from J&K's Udhampur exuded confidence in the Indian Army and said: 'We are with the country and our security forces. With the gods' mercy, nothing has been damaged here but trees...' Pathankot resident Jarnail Singh lauded the government for foiling Pakistan's attempt to hit areas in the border district. An eyewitness, Ashraf, recounted the incident, saying, "There was a loud explosion at 5.45 that, we came was an object found lying called up the Local Head, who then called up the Police. They came and retrieved it then. We didn't know what it are no casualties." Pakistan continued its drone attacks, targeting 26 locations in India - from Jammu and Kashmir to Gujarat - for the second consecutive night on Friday. In response, India activated its air defence network to neutralise the threats. "Drones have been sighted at 26 locations along the International Border and LoC with Pakistan. These include suspected armed drones. The locations include Baramulla, Srinagar, Avantipora, Nagrota, Jammu, Ferozpur, Pathankot, Fazilka, Lalgarh Jatta, Jaisalmer, Barmer, Bhuj, Kuarbet and Lakhi Nala. Regrettably, an armed drone targeted a civilian area in Ferozpur, resulting in injuries to members of a local family. The injured have been provided medical assistance, and security forces have sanitised the area. The Indian Armed Forces are maintaining a high state of alert, and all such aerial threats are being tracked and engaged using counter-drone systems. The situation is under close and constant watch & prompt action is being taken wherever necessary. Citizens, especially in border areas, are advised to remain indoors, limit unnecessary movement, and strictly follow safety instructions issued by local authorities. While there is no need for panic, heightened vigilance and precaution are essential," the Ministry of Defence said in its statement.
