Jordan to host Syria-US meeting on reconstruction

AMMAN: Jordan will host a meeting between the United States and Syria to discuss the situation in the war-ravaged country and explore reconstruction efforts, Amman's foreign ministry said on Sunday. The meeting on Tuesday, which will be attended by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al Shaibani and US special envoy for Syria Thomas Barrack, "will discuss the situation in Syria and ways to support the process of rebuilding Syria on foundations that guarantee its security, stability and sovereignty", according to a statement. It is a continuation of discussions held between the officials in Amman on July 19 about deadly clashes in the Syrian province of Sweida. The violence between Druze fighters and Bedouins in July ultimately drew the intervention of government forces and tribal fighters who came to support the Bedouins, as well as the Israeli military, which carried out strikes in support of the Druze. A ceasefire put an end to the week of bloodshed — which killed 1,400 people, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights — but the situation remained tense, flaring into violence again in August. — AFP

Syria's Sharaa to British Official: We Are Open to Any Initiative that Leads to Regional Stability

Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa received in Damascus on Tuesday UK National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell for talks on bilateral ties and regional and international developments, reported Syria's state news agency (SANA). Sharaa stressed that Syria is open to any sincere initiatives aimed at achieving regional security and stability, on condition that they support his country's sovereignty and independent voice. The meeting was attended by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and head of intelligence Hussein al-Salama. Britain announced in July that it was restoring diplomatic relations with Syria. Its foreign minister David Lammy visited Damascus in July to hold talks with Sharaa. It was the first visit by a British foreign secretary in 14 years. He 'emphasized that the UK will support the Syrian Government to deliver its commitments to build a more secure and prosperous future for Syrians, increasing security in the wider region and the UK,' said a statement from the British government at the time.

Syria's Kurds to insist on decentralised govt

DAMASCUS: Syria's Kurds will insist on a decentralised system of government in upcoming talks with the new authorities in Damascus, a senior Kurdish official said on Monday. The Kurdish-led administration in northeastern Syria signed an agreement with the new Syrian government in March to integrate into Syria's state institutions. The two sides are expected to meet again in Damascus "soon" to discuss the implementation of the deal, Badran Ciya Kurd, a senior official in the Kurdish-led administration, said. Kurdish-led forces have been in control of much of Syria's northeast, including its oil fields, since the outbreak of the country's civil war in 2011. With support from a US-led international coalition the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces played a key role in the IS group's territorial defeat in Syria, achieved in 2019. The Kurdish official said the delegation will demand "a decentralised, pluralistic, democratic Syria". "The mosaic of Syrian society cannot be governed by a political system that monopolises all powers and does not recognise the distinctiveness of regions and components," they added. Despite the March agreement, they rejected a temporary constitutional declaration announced by the Syrian authorities in March and said the new government failed to reflect the country's diversity, accusing it of centralising Syria's decision-making. This month, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al Shaibani warned that "the unity of Syrian territory is non-negotiable", adding that any delays in implementing the agreement with the Kurds would "prolong the chaos" in the country. — AFP
