Electric scooters to women: Sindh govt to hold ballot next month

KARACHI: The Sindh government has decided to hold a balloting next month to distribute electric scooters to women. In the first phase of the project, 1,000 women will receive electric scooters, and all necessary arrangements have been finalized. A high-level meeting was held in Karachi, chaired by Sindh Senior Minister and Provincial Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, to review in detail the progress of major transport projects including EV taxis and EV scooters. Sharjeel Inam Memon said that EV taxis and scooters are not only a source of employment for the youth but will also play a vital role in enhancing women's mobility and improving the environment. He added that the government is striving to launch the EV taxi project alongside the distribution of EV scooters among women by June 2025. The meeting was attended by Secretary Transport Asad Zamin, MD SMTA Kamal Dayo, CEO Trans Karachi Fawad Ghaffar Soomro, Director Yellow Line Zameer Abbasi, and other officials. The Project Director of the Yellow Line informed the meeting that a key component of the Yellow Line BRT project, the Jam Sadiq Bridge, will be completed by June 2025, three months ahead of the scheduled timeline of September 2025. He also informed that work on Depot 1 and Depot 2 is moving at a fast pace, and both are being completed ahead of time. Speaking on the Red Line BRT project while briefing, the CEO of Trans Karachi said intensive work is now in progress on building depots, stations, and the biogas plant. Sharjeel Inam Memon asked all the concerned institutions to complete the projects timely and of high standards so that modern, safe and reliable transportation facilities can benefit citizens. He further added that the early execution of the Jam Sadiq Bridge is a good thing, but such pace should be kept on all other projects as well. In the meantime, he underlined the imperative need of at least 500 new buses to deal with the transport issues in rural and urban Sindh. The meeting also saw a thorough debate on the EV taxi and scooter projects. Sharjeel Inam Memon said that since taking over the management of the Green Line BRT project, its performance has improved significantly. KARACHI: A meeting was held in Karachi, chaired by the Senior Minister of Sindh, Sharjeel Inam Memon, to review the progress of the Red Line BRT project. The session was graced by Secretary Transport Asad Zamin, CEO of Trans Karachi Fawad Ghaffar Soomro, representatives of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) mission, the contractors of the project, the engineers, and the senior officers of Trans Karachi. The meeting reviewed the current status of the Red Line BRT project in detail and thoroughly discussed the challenges faced by the project. Topics such as Lot Three, depot designs, the biogas plant, and other related matters were also discussed. The meeting was briefed that among the major issues presently afflicting the project include the augmentation of the K-4 water scheme and the realignment of utility structures by some of the firms. Addressing the session, Sindh Senior Minister and Provincial Minister of Information, Transport, and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon mentioned that the Red Line BRT is a step in history for creating a modern, green, and sustainable transport system. He urged all relevant stakeholders to accelerate the pace of work, deploy maximum resources, and complete the project as soon as possible. He said that the Red Line is not just a transport project but a promise to the people of Karachi for a better, cleaner, and more accessible urban future. He added that steps have been taken to address various issues, including the relocation of utilities. Representatives of the Asian Development Bank also assured their full support during the meeting. Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon inspected the progress of Yellow Line BRT and inspected the progress of the project. He was given a detailed briefing on the project by the consultants. About the Green Line, he said that its fares will not be increased but the facilities will be further increased so that better travel facilities could be provided to the people.

MVI centres to be activated in province

The Sindh government has decided to activate Motor Vehicle Inspection (MVI) centres across the province within a week. Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has issued directives in this regard. Additionally, it has been decided to make MVI mandatory for all vehicles entering Sindh through Sukkur. A high-level meeting of the Transport Department was held with Senior Minister in the chair. The meeting was attended by Secretary Transport Asad Zamin, Sindh Mass Transit Authority MD Kamal Dayo, Secretary Provincial Transport Authority Okash Memon, and other senior officials. The senior minister stated that decisive measures are being taken to ensure vehicle fitness for the improvement of the transport sector. He stated that four MVI centres are being established in Karachi, with two in Gulbai, one in Banaras, and one in Korangi. Additionally, MVI centres are being set up one each in Sukkur, Mirpurkhas, Hyderabad, and Shaheed Benazirabad.
