Asarani was told to act like Hitler in 'Sholay': ‘That's the kind of impact this character needs…'

August 15 marks the anniversary of one of the most iconic films released in Bollywood. This year, the classic film 'Sholay' officially turned 50! The film has managed to appeal to everyone, from children to old people, and has remained a favorite over the years. It boasted a powerful cast that included names like Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra playing the titular roles of Jai and Veeru, while other icons like Amjad Khan , Hema Malini, Sanjeev Kumar , Jaya Bachchan, and many others joined them to give the performance of a lifetime on the big screen. Another major part in the film was played by none other than Asarani, who took on the character of the jailer in the film. Recently, the veteran actor opened up about his role in the iconic film and how he managed to portray the brief role on the screen with so much ease. Asarani opens up about his role as the jailer on 'Sholay' While in conversation with BBC News Hindi, the actor delved into the past and specifically talked about his character in 'Sholay'. He mentioned that at the time, he was not aware of what he had to do in the film, and was directly called up by the film's director, Ramesh Sippy . He added that even though he did not know anything about the project, he still went to the meeting and found Sippy there along with Salim-Javed. He added, 'He told me: 'This character is a jailer. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Seniors are going crazy for these comfy, stylish, easy-on shoes Ultra-Comfortable Shoes Undo He's a foolish character, he thinks he's very smart, but he's actually not. So he tries to show off and act like a very powerful jailer. How would you do it?''. While Asarani mentioned that he had suggested that the uniform would help him get into character, the director had another, oddly specific situation in mind to draw inspiration from. Detailing on the matter, Asarani added that, 'He said, 'No. Look at this book.' He opened a book on the Second World War that had nine pages on Hitler. I said, 'Oh my god, is this a Hitler role?' They said, 'No, it's not Hitler, but this man behaves like him, talks like him. Forget the outfit, just remember this: Hitler, in his time, influenced an entire generation of youth with his speeches and expressions. People were ready to die for him. That's the kind of impact this character needs to have''. How he got into character Asarani then shared how he managed to perform the character on the spot. Sharing more details, he mentioned how Sippy shared that he needs to have the same 'rise and fall' in his voice, the way Hitler did. So he had gotten into character, worn the costume, and had done exactly what he was asked to do, which then resulted in one of the most revered characters on screen being born. 'Sholay' has managed to transcend boundaries of all kinds and even after years, is remembered by all generations. From Jai and Veeru's on-screen bond to Gabbar's iconic dialogues, such as "Tera kya hoga, Kaalia?" and "Kitne aadmi the?", the film has left a lasting impact and will continue to do so in the years to come.
