Syria Kurdish forces say 3 personnel dead in IS attack
by Naharnet Newsdesk 02 June 2025, 12:19 Kurdish security forces in northeast Syria said an Islamic State group attack killed three personnel on Sunday, as the jihadists keep up their attacks in Kurdish-controlled areas of the war-torn country. Noting "escalating activity" by the jihadists, a statement from the Asayish security forces said an IS cell "targeted a patrol" from the force's convoy and road security department on the Raqa-Hasakeh road. Since the December ouster of longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad, IS jihadists have repeatedly attacked Kurdish-led forces in the country's north and northeast. The roadside blast resulted "in the death of three or our members", the statement said, adding that "sweep operations and investigations" had begun to track down those responsible. Once in control of large swathes of Syria and Iraq, IS was territorially defeated in Syria in 2019 in a battle spearheaded by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) with support from an international coalition. The jihadists have continued to maintain a presence, mainly in the country's vast desert. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor also reported Sunday's attack, saying it was carried out by gunmen "believed to belong to an Islamic State group cell". The Britain-based Observatory, which relies on a network of sources inside Syria, said Kurdish forces were "accompanying an oil convoy" that was travelling through Raqa province bound for "areas controlled by Damascus". IS on Thursday claimed its first attack on Syria's new government forces since Assad's fall, the Observatory and the SITE Intelligence Group said. The Observatory said the attack on Wednesday, carried out by a remote-detonated landmine, killed one person and wounded three members of the Syrian army's 70th. Reported IS attacks in areas controlled by the new Islamist-led authorities since Assad's overthrow have been scarce.

Also in Kurdistan $73 million in development projects approved for Halabja province Kurdistan people's livelihood not a tool for political leverage: KDP leader Rwanga plants 20,000 olive saplings in Erbil President Barzani says Erbil wants stronger ties with Japan A+ A- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Three suspected members of the Islamic State (ISIS) were arrested by Kurdish security forces (Asayish) in separate operations in Sulaimani province, the Asayish said on Friday. 'In three separate operations and in coordination with the Iraqi national security forces, three wanted terrorists were arrested in the areas of Sulaimani, Chamchamal, and Sharazur,' Colonel Salam Abdulkhaliq, head of the Sulaimani-based Asayish media team, told Rudaw. All three suspects 'were active members of the ISIS organization,' Abdulkhaliq said. ISIS seized control of swathes of Iraqi land in 2014. The group was declared territorially defeated in 2017 but it continues to carry out bombings, hit-and-run attacks, and abductions. The militants have taken shelter in an area of land stretching across the provinces of Salahaddin, Diyala, Kirkuk, and Nineveh where there is a security vacuum because it is disputed between Baghdad and Erbil. Kurdish and Iraqi security forces frequently cooperate and carry out joint operations against ISIS cells in the Kurdistan Region. Thousands of people have been detained across Iraq since 2014 for suspected links to extremist groups, including ISIS, and hundreds have been executed. Malik Mohammed contributed to this report.

Over 1,000 arrested on drug charges in Kurdistan this year: Officials
Also in Kurdistan First cancer hospital opens in Duhok Duhok authorities hopeful PKK's dissolution will revive tourism Kurdish leaders, politicians welcome PKK's decision to disband Northeast of Erbil, locals celebrate town, heritage at annual festival A+ A- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - At least 1,000 people have been arrested across the Kurdistan Region on drug-related charges since the beginning of the year, security officials said on Sunday, averaging eight arrests a day as the Region continues fighting the rising use of drugs. Drug trafficking and use have been on the rise in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq since the fall of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein in 2003, with officials frequently warning of the spread of drugs in the Region. 'In the first four months of this year in Erbil and Duhok provinces, 612 people have been arrested on drug charges, 283 users and 329 traffickers,' Arkan Bibani, spokesperson for the Kurdistan Region's anti-narcotics directorate, told Rudaw. Salam Abdulkhaliq, head of the Sulaimani-based security forces (Asayish) media team, told Rudaw that in Sulaimani and Halabja provinces, as well as the Raparin and Garmiyan administrations, '388 suspects have been arrested for drug trafficking and use in the first four months of this year - 173 users and the rest were traffickers.' At least 550 kilograms of narcotic pills, 70 kilograms of Captagon, and 8,300 blister packs and individual pills have also been seized, according to combined statistics from the officials. The Kurdistan Region and Iraq, especially along their borders with Iran, Turkey, and Syria, are major transit routes for illicit drugs into Europe. In October 2023, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani said that the Kurdistan Region is intensifying its efforts to combat the threat of drugs, calling on Kurdish and international communities to cooperate with Erbil to eliminate what he described as an 'endemic' problem. One-fifth of the Kurdistan Region's prisoners are behind bars on drug-related charges, according to data obtained by Rudaw from government sources. In July, a research study published by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Regional Office reported that Iraq - including the Kurdistan Region - has recorded a 'sharp increase in the trafficking and use of Captagon over the past five years.'

Shafaq News/ Kurdish security forces in Al-Sulaymaniyah arrested four suspects and seized 10 kilograms of methamphetamine, the Asayish reported on Saturday. The raid intercepted three Iranian nationals and a resident of the Kurdistan Region during an attempt to smuggle the drugs to Duhok, according to authorities. Under Iraqi and Kurdish law, drug trafficking can carry heavy penalties, including life imprisonment or capital punishment in severe cases.
