Fish Falling from the Sky Sparks Wildfire Near Small Town After Osprey Drops Its Meal Mid-Flight
Firefighters confirmed on Aug. 1 that the 'suspect' was now in custodyNEED TO KNOW A wildfire in the Canadian town of Ashcroft, British Columbia, appeared to be sparked by a fish falling from the sky Once the fire was contained, the rescue team found a charred fish near the power line that appeared to start the wildfire The local fire rescue team surmised that a bird dropped its meal mid-flight, setting off the chain of events leading to the fireA fish falling from the sky appeared to be the cause of a wildfire in a small Canadian town. On Monday, Aug. 4, Ashcroft Fire Rescue shared details of the unusual occurrence in a release on Facebook, which was accompanied by a photo of a charred fish that is believed to have caused a brush fire in the Canadian town of Ashcroft, in British Columbia, on Wednesday, July 30. Officials say that a bird dropped the fish on a power line after becoming exhausted in the heat. This led to 'a landscape fire burning 6km (nearly 4 miles) south of town." According to the release, authorities found employees from BC Hydro, Ashcroft Ranch and Dawson Road Maintenance putting out the fire when they arrived at the scene. 'With the heavy fire being knocked down, Ashcroft fire was able to cool the perimeter and the burned area with Engine 3 and Tender 4,' the release read. 'Ashcroft Ranch's Tender was also on scene.' The fire rescue team then discovered that a fish 'had been dropped by a local osprey onto the hydro line causing embers to drop, along with the fish, to the dry grasses below.' 'A quick investigation revealed the cause of this fire. It was determined to be a fish, yes, you read that right, the fish had an incredible journey, considering the river is 3km east from the point of origin,' Ashcroft Fire and Rescue wrote on Facebook. Investigators stated that they suspected the fish's size and the heat caused the bird to get tired and drop its prey. 'Or another suspicion could be that it's tired of raw fish and wanted to give cooked a try,' authorities joked. While officials said that they may never know the bird's motive, they confirmed that their 'prime suspect' was not injured 'and is still flying at large.' Meanwhile, in an update on Friday, Aug. 1, the rescue team said that the 'suspect osprey' had been captured and "was in custody." "The judge has not granted bail as the suspect poses an extreme….flight risk!" they joked. Read the original article on People

Canada wildfire sparked by fish falling from the sky
A fish falling from the sky has sparked a wildfire and power outage in rural Canada. Firefighters believe the blaze was started after an osprey got tired in the heat and dropped its prey onto power lines, causing a short circuit. They said investigators found that the fish 'had been dropped by a local osprey onto hydro lines,' with the resulting embers starting the fire on the dry grass below. The Ashcroft Fire Rescue service said: 'A quick investigation revealed the cause of this fire. It was determined to be a fish. 'Yes, you read that right, the fish had an incredible journey.' 'Another suspicion could be that it's tired of raw fish and wanted to give cooked a try,' the firefighters joked. The fire took hold around two miles west of the closest river - with investigators suspecting the bird took flight after catching the fish. However, they believe it got tired and dropped its prey because it was large and the temperatures were high at the time. Firefighters added in their social media post that they have verified the 'prime suspect sustained no injuries in the incident.' The fire briefly knocked out the power for Ashcroft, and firefighters and ranchers used about 4,800 gallons of water to put out the blaze. It comes as deadly wildfires have been spreading through France this week. The fast-moving blaze in the south of the country first broke out in the south of the country on Tuesday and has burned some 13,000 hectares of land. 'It's a scene of sadness and desolation,' said Jacques Piraux, mayor of the village of Jonquières, where all residents have been evacuated. 'It looks like a lunar landscape, everything is burned. More than half or three-quarters of the village has burned down.' A 65-year-old woman died in her home while nine others were injured, including seven firefighters were hurt as they fought the flames. 'The resident absolutely wanted to stay in her house and unfortunately the fire quickly arrived and engulfed her house,' said the mayor of Saint-Laurent-de-la-Cabrerisse, Xavier de Volontat, about the victim. 'People are losing everything,' said Aude Damesin, who lives in the town of Fabrezan. 'I find it tragic to see so many fires since the beginning of the summer.' Meanwhile, in Spain hundreds of people were said to have bunkered down in a shelter in Algeciras after being evacuated from hotels and homes due to fires. Firefighters were still working to extinguish the fire on Wednesday, having battled through the night to control the blaze that required a team of up to 17 aircraft. The flames began spreading in the hills of Torre de la Peña, behind the hugely popular resort of Tarifa.

Feathery suspect (and its fishy accomplice) responsible for starting brush fire in Canada
It was a fish fry that went awry. A feathered suspect and its scaly accomplice are the shocking cause of a brush fire in British Columbia, according to officials. "There is something fishy about this call and we definitely suspect fowl play!" the Ashcroft Fire Rescue wrote in a statement on Facebook on Wednesday, July 30, after responding to a brush fire that started just before noon. An osprey, a fish-eating bird of prey, is believed to have started the fire after dropping its lunch, a fish, onto power lines. Sparks and the fish fell to the dry grass below, which resulted in the fire. "We do suspect by the size of the fish and the heat of the day probably caused the rather tired bird to drop its catch," the fire rescue wrote. "Or another suspicion could be that it's tired of raw fish and wanted to give cooked a try." The fire department also wrote this as the situation came to a close about the osprey on Friday, Aug. 1: "The judge has not granted bail as the suspect poses an extreme….flight risk!" Far from the river The fire department believes the fish came from a river that is 1.86 miles, 3 km, east of the fire. "The fish had an incredible journey," the fire department stated. The brush fire, which has since been put out, started as hundreds of fires across the country were impacting air quality in the U.S. and Canada. As of Tuesday, Aug. 5, there were 755 active fires in Canada, according to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre. Julia is a trending reporter for USA TODAY. Fish causes small brush fire and power outage in British Columbia
Firefighters in British Columbia determined that a fish dropped by an osprey caused a power outage and a small brush fire. Ashcroft Fire Rescue said in a lengthy Facebook post on Tuesday (05.08.25) that the fish struck a power line 3km east of the body of water where it resided. A brush fire then broke out near Highway 1 - 6km south of Ashcroft - of which FireFighters, as well as utility workers from British Columbia Hydro and Power Authority, an employee with Dawson Road Maintenance, and Ashcroft ranchers responded to it just before noon. Officials identified the osprey and said it "sustained no injuries in the incident". The Facebook post by Ashcroft Fire Rescue read: "Do you wonder why the power was out in Ashcroft today? There is something fishy about this call, and we definitely suspect fowl play! "Shortly before noon hour, Ashcroft Fire was dispatched to a landscape fire burning 6km south of town. "The fire was located just off the east side of highway 1. When the crew arrived on scene, it was noted that an employee with Dawson Road Maintenance, BC Hydro employees and Ashcroft Ranch hands were actively fighting the fire. "With the heavy fire being knocked down, Ashcroft fire was able to cool the perimeter and the burned area with Engine 3 and Tender 4. "Ashcroft Ranch's Tender was also on scene. "With all units combined, roughly 4800 gallons of water was put down into an area roughly 60x90 meters. It's safe to say that this area has been significantly cooled. All of us are very thankful that wind was not a factor in today's incident. "A quick investigation revealed the cause of this fire. "It was determined to be a fish, yes, you read that right, the fish had an incredible journey, considering the river is 3km east from the point of origin. "The fish had been dropped by a local osprey onto the hydro line, causing embers to drop, along with the fish, to the dry grasses below. "We do suspect by the size of the fish and the heat of the day probably caused the rather tired bird to drop its catch. "Or another suspicion could be that it's tired of raw fish and wanted to give cooked a try. "We may never know the answer, but it has been verified that our prime suspect sustained no injuries in the incident and is still flying at large. (sic)"
