Hugo, Florence, and Cape Verde: Why we name hurricanes

Thirty-five years ago, the worst storm to hit the Queen City made landfall. Even though Hugo was a category one hurricane by the time it hit Charlotte, it carried winds close to 100 mph with it. The winds were so strong they wiped out almost the entirety of the city's tree canopy and left 85% of Charlotte's residents without power. Four people in the metro were killed, it took months before life for most Charlotteans went back to normal. Duke Energy told us last fall that since Hugo, their storm response team has grown -- communication, technology and meteorology have all improved. But they face one problem: so many people are moving to Charlotte. So while emergency responders prepare to keep up with the boom, there's more people that will need protection from storms like Hugo, which was what's called a 'Cape Verde storm.' When we get to the months of September and October, we arrive at our most dangerous time. Not only is it prime time for hurricanes, more start forming off of the coast of Africa. These Cape Verde storms develop near those islands and travel across the entire warm ocean, strengthening with each mile they travel. By the time they reach the U.S. mainland, they are monsters. Hurricane Florence in September of 2018 was also known as a Cape Verde storm, and the Carolinas are still dealing with the impacts from that. Florence is a good reminder that each storm has its own characteristics - that there is no single specific type of storm. They come in all shapes and sizes and each offer different kinds of deadly threats. Consider this - in that year of 2018 we also had Hurricane Michael that slammed into Florida as a category five storm. Florence was a 'mere' category one when it hit Wrightsville Beach. Who claimed more lives? Florence. Why? Michael raced through the south. Florence moved through our region at an astonishingly slow two miles per hour. That's why they get a name, each storm is different: different sizes, different shapes, different speeds, and many different ways they can threaten your family and your property. And all it takes is just one. The time to be ready is now. (VIDEO: Asheville-based businesses struggle to recover months after Hurricane Helene)

Chained dog lived in a ‘six-foot circle.' Then ‘forgotten' pup got second chance

A chained dog lived in a 'six-foot circle' — then the 'forgotten' pup got a second chance. After Alicia received much-needed medical care, she was adopted into a 'loving' home, a North Carolina animal shelter worker told McClatchy News in a phone interview. 'We're all so happy for her,' said Rebeka Garcia, a spokesperson for Brother Wolf Animal Rescue. 'From the moment she came in, she really put herself in our hearts. Even though she's been through everything that she's been through, every time she sees a new person: best friend, immediately. She'll run up and press her whole body against you for pets and then run off with a wagging tail to say 'hi' to the next person.' The Asheville-based rescue shared Alicia's story on social media May 19, about two months after her heartwarming adoption. Her journey at the shelter started after she experienced a rough patch. 'Her world was a six-foot circle,' the shelter wrote on Facebook. 'A rusted chain. An empty bowl. A collar that once fit snugly — now sagging from the weight of neglect. Alicia was forgotten. Alone. Day after day, night after night. A cruel existence.' An animal control team found Alicia 'extremely emaciated' before she was surrendered to a shelter in February. When she was transferred to Brother Wolf, she started heartworm treatment and a plan to gain weight, Garcia said. Despite Alicia's past, the roughly 1-year-old pup showed off her sweet and friendly personality. 'She looked at us with soft, grateful eyes,' the rescue wrote. 'And she leaned in — gently — asking for a hug. That's when we learned Alicia doesn't just want love. She wants to be held like a baby. She freely gives kisses like she's making up for all the ones she never got.' Eventually, Alicia's online profile caught the eye of a couple. They adopted her the same day she became available in late March, leaving shelter workers 'thrilled,' according to Garcia. After the adoption, Garcia said the family has reported their pup is a 'lover and a goofball' who's having a smooth adjustment to her new home.

Echoes of the Forest to Host Unveiling Event for First ‘Echo' in Asheville's River Arts District

ASHEVILLE, N.C., May 12, 2025 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Echoes of the Forest, an Asheville-based 501(c)(3), is thrilled to announce the unveiling of its very first Echo. This is a significant milestone in the organization's mission to promote community revitalization, environmental restoration, and economic rejuvenation through art. The event will take place at Foundation Woodworks in Asheville's River Arts District on Thursday, June 12 at 5 p.m. (details below). Echoes of the Forest was founded to honor the trees lost in our region by transforming them into meaningful works of art. Through the hands of local artists, these salvaged remnants become powerful symbols of renewal—supporting the creative economy and showcasing the resilience of our artistic community. By placing these 'Echoes' in areas impacted by natural disasters, the initiative promotes restoration, inspires environmental awareness, and strengthens community connection. The Echo project represents a powerful blend of art, nature, and resilience, designed to honor the recovery of one of western North Carolina's hardest-hit regions after Hurricane Helene. This first Echo is a symbol of transformation both for the land and the people who call it home. Created by Chester Shuey of Appalachian Joinery, this masterfully crafted piece is made from an 800-pound piece of Hurricane Helene salvaged white oak. It's sure to evoke reflection and encourage hope and healing. 'When Liisa first asked me about getting involved with Echoes of the Forest, I knew immediately that this was a special project and one that I couldn't wait to get on board with. Within a few days, I got my salvaged white oak wood and was ready to get started on my bench. Right away, I knew what I wanted to design. It's such an honor to be included in a mission that would involve my fellow woodworking community; it just felt like the right thing to do because these trees mean so much and so does our artist revitalization,' said Shuey. This first Echo is a true testament to the mission of this organization. 'We're excited to unveil it in the River Arts District at Foundation Woodworks. This area was one of the hardest hit regions post-Hurricane Helene,' said Liisa Andreassen, founder of Echoes of the Forest. 'We aim to inspire connection, celebrate community strength with economic revitalization, and highlight the beauty of our natural surroundings.' EVENT DETAILS: The event will also include an opportunity to win a one-of-a-kind Echoes of the Forest masterpiece crafted by Mike Ayers, an internationally acclaimed chainsaw artist. Raffle tickets can be purchased here: The raffle piece is crafted from a salvaged walnut tree that was the victim of Helene and depicts a mountain man with leaves swirling about his head with a tear coming down his cheek. Raffle tickets will be available for last-minute purchases and the drawing will take place at an after-party and 'Meet the Woodworkers' mingle at the nearby Radical Hotel's Roof Top Cocktail Bar at 95 Roberts Street. Attendees will learn about future planned Echo installations in the region and will have the exclusive opportunity to be part of discussions surrounding community resilience and ecological restoration.
