LUCKNOW: A dreaded gangster, Ashish Ranjan alias Chhotu Singh, was neutralised in an early morning operation by the UP Special Task Force in Prayagraj on Thursday. Hailing from Dhanbad in Jharkhand, the criminal was eliminated near Shivrajpur crossing under the Shankargarh police station area. The gangster, who carried a reward of Rs 4 lakh on his arrest, was killed when he opened fire with an AK-47 rifle and a 9 mm pistol at the STF sleuths, prompting a retaliation by them. In the action, the criminal was critically injured and later declared dead. According to ADG (law and order) Amitabh Yash, the STF rounded up the criminal following a tip-off that he was on his way to Prayagraj to execute a major criminal offence with an accomplice. Consequently, the STF team laid a trap near Shivrajpur.

A criminal wanted for involvement in multiple murders was injured on Thursday in an encounter with the Special Task Force (STF) in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj, officials to the police, the STF received a tip off that the criminal, Ashish Ranjan alias Chhotu Singh, a resident of Jharkhand's Dhanbad, was expected to arrive in Prayagraj along with a partner to commit yet another crime. Acting on the tip off, the task force prepared and waited to capture Ranjan. On his eventual arrival, the task force tried to nab him near Shivrajpur upon realising the presence of the task force, started firing at them with an AK-47 assault rifle and a pistol. During the incident, three officers of the STF — JP Rai, Prabhanjan and Rohit — narrowly escaped the firing. The team fired back in self-defence and struck Ranjan, injuring him. As a result, he was arrested and rushed to the hospital for immediate the encounter, an AK-47 rifle, a 9-millimetre pistol, a large quantity of live and empty cartridges and a motorcycle were recovered by the task Director General, Law and order, Amitabh Yash said that further legal proceedings and investigations are underway.- EndsMust Watch IN THIS STORY#Uttar Pradesh

Acting on the tip-off, the Prayagraj STF team laid a trap near Shivrajpur crossing to intercept the accused. However, upon being challenged, Ranjan opened indiscriminate fire at the police team using an AK-47 rifle and a 9mm pistol, he said. Further legal proceedings and investigations are underway, he said. Police recovered both weapons, 36 rounds of ammo, and a motorcycle from the spot A notorious criminal from Jharkhand, Ashish Ranjan alias Chhotu, was killed in an encounter with the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) late on Wednesday night. The incident occurred at Shivrajpur intersection in the Shankargarh police station area of Prayagraj district, Uttar Pradesh. Ashish Ranjan opened fire on the STF team with an AK-47 rifle and a 9mm pistol. The STF retaliated in self-defence, resulting in his death. From the spot, police recovered one AK-47 rifle, one 9mm pistol, 36 rounds of 9mm ammunition, and a motorcycle. His body has been sent for post-mortem examination. Ashish Ranjan was a notorious criminal from Dhanbad, Jharkhand, with several serious charges against him, including murder, robbery, and ransom. He took control of his criminal operations following the murder of gangster Aman Singh. Dhanbad police had placed a reward of Rs 4 lakh for his capture. Acting on intelligence that Ashish Ranjan was plotting a major criminal act in Prayagraj, the UP STF tracked him to the Shivrajpur intersection. As the team closed in, he opened fire, triggering a gunfight in which he sustained critical injuries and later died during treatment. One of his accomplices managed to flee under the cover of darkness. Following the encounter, the police are now searching for Ashish's escaped accomplice and investigating his criminal network. An FIR has been registered at Shankargarh police station, and a forensic team has collected evidence from the scene.
