Butterpunk, DayTrip, more restaurant, bar openings, events in Asheville
ASHEVILLE - An Asheville chef earns nod from prestigious national culinary awards program; new Asheville and Woodfin restaurants to visit; an update on hard-hit Tropical Storm Helene brewery and bar reopenings; an Indian cuisine collaboration of North Carolina award-winning chefs and restaurants; and Asheville Citizen Times' food writer to co-host a culinary chat. The James Beard Foundation Media Awards, honoring candidates in books, broadcast media and journalism, is considering a local chef. Ashleigh Shanti, chef and owner of Good Hot Fish, has been nominated for her debut cookbook, 'Our South: Black Food Through My Lens,' in the U.S. Foodways category, designated for "books with recipes focused on the cooking or foodways of regions or communities located within the United States." "Our South" features more than 125 recipes inspired by personal journeys and Black foodways traversing through the Southeast from coastal Virginia to North Carolina's Appalachians to the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Shanti, a 2020 Rising Star Chef of the Year semifinalist and Season 19 "Top Chef" contestant, was also a semifinalist for Best Chef: Southeast this year. The Media Awards ceremony will be on June 14, and the Restaurant and Chef Awards will be on June 16, in Chicago and live-streamed. For more, visit Chef Beth Kellerhals' biscuit café, Butterpunk, has opened at 372 Depot Street in the River Arts District. Stop in for biscuit sammies and coffee from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday-Monday. Zen Sushi opened its second location, becoming one of S&W's food hall vendors at 56 Patton Ave. downtown. The assorted menu of sushi rolls, salads, appetizers and more for those hanging out at the historic cafeteria or taking a dish to go. Baba Nahm opened at its new location, 60 Biltmore Ave. downtown. The Mediterranean eatery is now open for breakfast and lunch, 7:30-10 a.m. and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday. Dinner service will be added soon. Hilltop Ice Cream Shop, of Fairview, has opened a second location at 235 Weaverville Road in Woodfin. The summer hours are 1-9 p.m. daily. Pho Real Vietnamese Restaurant has opened at 640 Merrimon Ave., open 11 a.m.-9 p.m. daily. Grand Bohemian Asheville Lodge and its restaurant, Red Stag Grill, have reopened in the historic Biltmore Village after being flooded by the Swannanoa River during Helene. Reserve a table at DayTrip and Hi-Wire Brewing's RAD Beer Garden return after a more than seven-month recovery following Tropical Storm Helene. DayTrip, a 1970s-inspired vintage cocktail lounge, has opened at 174 Broadway St. Its original location on Amboy Road, where it was for nearly one month, was flooded by the French Broad River during the historic storm. The hours are 4 p.m.-midnight Sunday-Thursday and 3 p.m.-1 a.m. Friday and Saturday. A "Grandma Prom" will be hosted from 8 p.m.-midnight May 29. Hi-Wire Brewing's Beer Garden and Distribution Center will reopen on May 24 at 284 Lyman Street in RAD. It was closed after taking in nearly 15 feet of floodwater from the French Broad River. Hi-Wire's grand reopening celebration will be from 12-9 p.m. May 24, featuring live music, food trucks, visual performers and a makers' market with local artists and vendors. Hi-Wire will offer 24 draft beers (including three silver-medal World Beer Cup winners), specialty cocktails and slushies, and retail canned beer. Cheetie Kumar, a two-time James Beard Foundation Award nominee and five-time semifinalist, and owner of Ajja in Raleigh, is partnering with Chai Pani and Spicewalla for two events and a new spice blend. Chef Cheetie Kumar and Spicewalla have introduced the Rose Harissa, a smoky and floral spice blend that's recommended for diverse uses, from seasoning roasts and sauces to rimming a cocktail glass. It's made with ancho chilli powder, garlic, paprika, caraway, coriander, rose powder, cumin, salt, brown sugar, citric acid and cayenne. The 3.2 oz tin costs $11.99, available at the Spicewalla store downtown and online. On May 15, during a menu takeover from 5-9 p.m., Chai Pani will feature several of Kumar's specials made with Rose Harissa. On May 16, Spicewalla will host the Roses & Rosé release party at the Grove Arcade store, 1 Page Ave. The party will include a spice tasting, complimentary rosé, and a "tin signing" with Kumar. National awards, praise bestowed on Asheville restaurants, bars, breweries
ASHEVILLE - Asheville diners and imbibers know what the city has to offer, and the nation and world are taking notice. Beverage industry and Southern lifestyle publications have applauded local restaurants and bars for their menus and overall excellence. Several breweries and distilleries have been awarded medals in international craft beer and spirits competitions. Taste the best of the best ― here are some of Asheville's latest award-winning and accolade-earning destinations.: Southern Living editors scoured the country for the best new bites, finding three Asheville establishments worthy of making its list of the 20 Best New Restaurants in the South.: Good Hot Fish, a modern fish camp owned and operated by Chef Ashleigh Shanti, a former "Top Chef" and recurring Food Network contestant, offers a menu of creatively crafted seafood and Appalachian dishes ranging from catfish to trout bologna sandwiches. The eatery opened in January 2024 inside Eulogy, a music venue at Burial Beer Co., 10 Buxton Ave., in South Slope. Luminosa, a modern Appalachian-meets-Italian cuisine restaurant, opened in May 2024 in the historic Flatiron Building, which has been renovated as The Flat Iron Hotel at 20 Battery Park Ave. Led by Executive Chef Graham House and Chef de Cuisine Sean McMullen, Luminosa's seasonal menu regularly rotates with pasta, pizza and other vegetable-forward plates. Potential New Boyfriend, a wine bar and music listening lounge at 21 Haywood Road, opened in West Asheville in December. The menu of snacks and desserts, curated by pastry chef Dana Amromin, complements its modern, chic aesthetic and beverage selections. Save room for the artisan ice cream made by the owner, Disco. Good Hot Fish, Luminosa and Potential New Boyfriend were the only North Carolina businesses on the list, which can be viewed at Craft Spirits Magazine released its annual list of the best bars in the nation, with nods to two downtown watering holes, The Crow & Quill and Top of the Monk, which represent the Southeast on the list of favorites. The honorees were nominated by readers and selected for their approach to not just serving but also celebrating craft spirits. The Crow & Quill is a Prohibition-era speakeasy-style bar located at 106 N. Lexington Ave. featuring a catalog of nearly 1,100 spirits, including about 800 whiskeys. The Crow & Quill was one of 27 on the 2024 USA TODAY Bars of the Year list. Top of the Monk is the third-level cocktail bar at 92 Patton Ave. It's the top-floor concept with a rooftop deck in the same building as the craft beer taprooms, Thirsty Monk on the main floor and Delirium Bar in the basement, which are temporarily closed. Highland Brewing Co.'s Daycation Gold won the gold medal in the German-style Kölsch category. Visit Highland Brewing's taproom at 12 Old Charlotte Hwy. Hi-Wire Brewing Co. won the silver medal for its Hi-Wire Lager in the International-Style Pilsner category. Hi-Wire has three Asheville taprooms, including the recently reopened RAD Beer Garden at 284 Lyman St. Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.'s Weizenbock won the gold medal in the South German-Style Weizenbock category. Its Mills River taproom is at 100 Sierra Nevada Way. Two local distilleries were awarded honors in the 2025 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Oak & Grist Distilling Co., at 1556 Grovestone Road in Black Mountain, won a gold medal for its American single-malt whiskey, Descendent. Chemist Spirits also won a gold medal for its American single-malt whiskey. The distillery and its cocktail bar, Antidote, are at 151 Coxe Ave. The winners are listed at The Mule, the bar at Devil's Foot Beverage, will host Winner's Circle, celebrating the awardees from 1-4 p.m. June 28 at 131 Sweeten Creek Road. April Franqueza, of The Dining Room at High Hampton Resort, 1525 Highway 107 South in Cashiers, is a finalist for Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker. The winners will be announced live at the James Beard Foundation Restaurant and Chef Awards ceremony on June 16 in Chicago. Canje's block party returns for its 3rd year—here's everything you need to know
If you need a reason to get out of the house on a Monday night, let that reason be a block party, and no one throws a party quite like Canje. Founded by chef Tavel Bristol-Joseph and Emmer & Rye Hospitality Group, this vibrant East Austin restaurant is hosting its third annual block party with an exciting lineup of local and national chefs, DJ sets and, of course, signature drinks to get the party started. This year's culinary guests are celebrities in their own right, including Ashleigh Shanti of Good Hot Fish (Asheville), Ian Corral of Mezquite (San Antonio) and Grace Aguilar of Five O Four (Austin). Each chef will whip up a signature dish packed with depth and creative flavor, so come hungry. Food and drink tickets will be available for purchase on-site for $12 each.
