BET taps Cam Newton for new sports talk show

BET is launching a sports talk show this fall hosted by NFL MVP Cam Newton and CBS Sports reporter Ashley Nicole Moss. Why it matters: The network is betting on nostalgia and celebrity appeal to draw an audience. The big picture: The weekly series, called "106 & Sports," will feature a lead story, celebrity interviews, fashion critiques, viral highlights, hot takes and debates. It will be a spinoff of "106 & Park," a music-focused staple on the network from 2000-2014. Friction point: The announcement of the series during Monday night's "BET Awards" received a lukewarm reaction from fans. Behind the scenes: "106 & Sports" will be filmed in front of a live studio audience in Newton's hometown of Atlanta. The former Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots quarterback has made several appearances as a commentator on ESPN and hosts two talk shows on his YouTube channel. SpringHill, the studio within Fulwell Entertainment owned by LeBron James and Maverick Carter, will produce the show.

NFL icon Cam Newton stuns fans with bizarre floral outfit on red carpet: 'He looks like my grandma's couch'

Former NFL star Cam Newton left fans befuddled on Monday night as he arrived to the BET Awards in an extremely eye-catching outfit. The 2015 MVP has become known for his daring style choices over the years and his latest look was no less risky, as he wore a sleeveless pink floral vest with matching pants. Newton completed the look with olive green loafers, a wide-brim hat and a neckerchief in similar colors. And fans had some hysterical critiques for the former Panthers and Patriots passer. 'He looks like my grandma's couch,' one wrote on X. 'Oh my and he thinks he looks good?' another asked. 'His fashion sense is trash,' a third chimed in. A fourth hilariously compared his outfit to a 'luxury Christmas wrap.' And a fifth said he looked like a 'ghetto a** Liberace.' Newton's look was even roasted by some in attendance of the award ceremony, as famous entertainers Druski and Kai Cenat laughed hysterically at it on the latter's stream. At one point in the night, Newton took the stage with sports commentator Ashley Nicole Moss, as the pair announced they'd be hosting a new show for BET. The show, they said, will be called '106 and Sports', a spin-off of the network's famous music video show '106 & Park.' Newton, who has also seen success with his '4th&1' and 'Funky Friday' podcasts, last played in the NFL in the 2021 season for the Panthers. Before he spent a one-season stint in New England the year prior, the 2011 No. 1 overall pick starred in Carolina for nine seasons, making three Pro Bowls and leading the team to the Super Bowl in the 2015 season. Newton made over $135million in his career, per Spotrac. Nonetheless, he recently admitted that it 'hurts' that he can no longer be 'superman' to his eight kids while earning less money in his post-football career. Newton has six biological children and is also raising two kids from ex-girlfriends' past relationships. 'I'm going into a different phase of my life that's going to require a different form of myself,' Newton said while featuring on the Fox reality television show 'Special Forces: World's Toughest Test'. 'Being in the NFL, everyone knows there's a large sum of money that comes to you in a short span of time and being away from the game for three years, those checks don't came in the same. Like I got eight kids.' 'It hurts me knowing that I can't provide like I once did. It hurts thinking that I'm Superman, but in reality, I'm just a man,' he added.
