Hoërskool Marais Viljoen High School's Ashlynn Norman (17) was part of South Africa's athletics team and stars that performed incredibly well at the 11th African Union Sport Council (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games in Swakopmund, Namibia. AUSC is a specialised technical office of the African Union (AU) responsible for sports. It was established through the endorsement of the Statute of AUSC by the Assembly of African Heads of States and Governments in 2016. Part of AUSC's mandate is to co-ordinate African sports action between Member States for the promotion and development of sports and development through sport in Africa. Norman was part of 198 athletes across 13 different sporting codes who topped the medals table. She opened and closed her event with a jump of 5.38m. She reportedly showed nerves at first but went on to finish strong, clinching gold for Team SA in long jump. She also powered her team to victory in relay in the 4x100m category, earning herself a second gold medal. 'We are incredibly proud of Ashlynn Norman, who represented South Africa at the Region 5 Games in Swakopmund and walked away with not one, but two gold medals. Ashlynn is a hardworking and talented athlete, and above all, a proud learner of Marais Viljoen. Her passion is unstoppable. Chef with 25 years experience takes charge at care home
A chef with 25 years of experience has taken charge at a care home in the city. Karl Turner, who began his culinary journey at 15, is now the Head Chef at Ashlynn Grange care home in Peterborough. Starting as a pot washer in a local pub, Karl quickly moved up the ranks to become a commis chef at a four-star hotel in Stratford by 18. However, a few years ago, he switched his focus to the care industry, seeking new challenges and the chance to make a positive impact on people's lives through food. Mr Turner found satisfaction in knowing his work directly improved the lives of residents. Strongly influenced by his upbringing, Mr Turner has a deep appreciation for traditional English dishes, which he still loves to cook today. He believes in continuous learning and is always eager to discover new techniques and ideas. This involves the preparation of between 80 and 150 individual ramekin desserts daily. Looking ahead, Mr Turner is excited to roll out a new spring menu and play a key role in upcoming special events, such as the charity ball in February, Mother's Day lunch, and Easter celebrations. He also plans to bring elements of his previous hotel catering expertise into Ashlynn's front-of-house services, and introduce a new nutrition and hydration trolley initiative to give residents even more choice. Outside of work, Mr Turner enjoys spending time with his partner, his 18-year-old son—who is also a chef—and his stepson. He also loves walking, particularly around Rutland Water.
