'US Economy Runs On Code Written In India': AAP MP Writes To Trump Over 50% Tariff

Last Updated: AAP MP Ashok Kumar Mittal wrote to President Trump, rebutting his "dead economy" remark and urging dialogue over trade. Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Indian goods. While Indians are outraged over Donald Trump's repeated attacks against India, a Rajya Sabha MP decided to write a letter to the US President, calling for a dialogue over trade. In an 'open letter" to Trump, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Ashok Kumar Mittal rebutted his 'dead economy" remark and said India's economy is the fourth largest in the world and is soon to be third. Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order to impose additional 25% tariffs on Indian goods over the purchase of Russian oil, taking the total levies to 50%. India said that it will take all necessary steps to protect its interests. Punjab MP Ashok Kumar Mittal writes to US President Donald Trump, warning of the impact if 146 crore Indians restrict U.S. businesses. — Press Trust of India (@PTI_News) August 7, 2025 Mittal further pointed out that American companies generate USD 80+ billion annually from the Indian market across education, tech, finance, and IP. He also emphasised the role of Indian techies, saying the US digital economy runs on code-much of it written in India. 'For two nations that have a long strategic, values-based partnership, this move is deeply disappointing…India's position as the third-largest air transport market holds deep strategic value for the U.S., with deals worth $2.45 billion signed in 2022 alone," he stated. 'Mr. President, let us choose dialogue over discord, coordination over coercion. Let us shape the future through respect, resolve, and renewed commitment to a rules-based global order," he added. Mittal's colleague in AAP and MP Vikramjit Singh Sahney called out the US over 'double standards" over Russian oil. 'It was under US pressure that we imported oil from Russia after the US sanctioned Iran… Whatever oil we import, we process it, and European countries buy it from us. They fully know the origin of this crude oil. The US itself is buying uranium from Russia… So they cannot have these double standards… Let's hope good sense prevails on President Trump," he said. Singh highlighted that the primary impact of this 50% tariff will be on India's MSME sector and warned of revenue and job losses. 'We have to pass through these turbulent times. Dialogue must continue… In the meantime, we must diversify," he said. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 'Who's he to stop us?' AAP MP on Trump tariffs, penalty for buying oil from Russia

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Ashok Kumar Mittal on Wednesday strongly criticised United States President Donald Trump's announcement of a 25% additional tariff on Indian products, calling it "illogical" and accusing Washington, DC, of applying "double standards" in its trade policies. Aam Aadmi Party MP Ashok Kumar Mittal also suggested that the current situation could also open up new avenues for the Indian economy.(File/Sansad TV) Mittal defended India's purchase of oil from Russia and questioned the legitimacy of US criticism. Mittal said, "Yes, we are purchasing oil from Russia. Who is he to stop us? He himself is purchasing uranium, certain critical metals from Russia. His allies, European countries, are purchasing oil from Russia. China is purchasing oil from can't have double standards, double policies. He will have to withdraw his illogical orders, illogical tariffs." Mittal asserted that Indian industry is "competent enough" and will find "alternative ways to sell the products." He said, "The US has imposed a 50% total tariff on Indian products. Of course, this will hurt the Indian industry in the short term. But our entrepreneurs, our businessmen, our industrialists are competent enough, strong enough. They will find alternative ways to sell the products." He suggested that the current situation could also open up new avenues for the Indian economy. "We may increase consumption in India, we are 1.4 billion populations and we can find some more markets. Rather, it may give us opportunities. Indian economy is growing 6 to 8 % per year, and its effect on GDP will be maximum 0.2, meaning nothing as per our growth, and we will easily absorb this deficiency in our growth and find other ways." His reaction comes after, US President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed an Executive Order imposing an additional 25 per cent tariff on imports from India. According to the order issued by the White House, Trump cited matters of national security and foreign policy concerns, as well as other relevant trade laws, for the increase, claiming that India's imports of Russian oil, directly or indirectly, pose an "unusual and extraordinary threat" to the United the order, the total tariff on Indian goods will be 50 per cent. While the initial duty becomes effective on August 7, the additional levy will come into effect after 21 days and will be imposed on all Indian goods imported into the US, except for goods already in transit or those meeting specific exemptions. The Executive Order also allows for modifications based on changing circumstances, including potential retaliation by other countries or steps taken by Russia or India to address the national emergency." Accordingly, and as consistent with applicable law, articles of India imported into the customs territory of the United States shall be subject to an additional ad valorem rate of duty of 25 per cent," the order stated. India has termed the United States' move to impose additional tariffs on India over its oil imports from Russia as "unfair, unjustified and unreasonable." Ministry of External Affairs said New Delhi will take "all actions necessary to protect its national interests." In an official statement, the MEA said, "The United States has in recent days targeted India's oil imports from Russia. We have already made clear our position on these issues, including the fact that our imports are based on market factors and done with the overall objective of ensuring the energy security of 1.4 billion people of India." "It is therefore extremely unfortunate that the US should choose to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest," the statement added. We reiterate that these actions are unfair, unjustified and unreasonable. India will take all actions necessary to protect its national interests," the MEA stressed. (ANI)

AAP Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Kumar Mittal brings resolution to designate Pak ‘state sponsor of terrorism'

Chandigarh: AAP Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Kumar Mittal on Saturday tabled a resolution in the House to designate Pakistan as a 'state sponsor of terrorism'. The resolution was introduced as part of a parliamentary intervention during the ongoing monsoon session. In a press statement, Mittal said he recounted Pakistan's decades-long policy of using terrorism as a tool of foreign policy. Citing documented instances from the 1947 invasion of Jammu & Kashmir to the recent Pahalgam terror attack, the resolution called for sweeping measures, including diplomatic isolation, economic sanctions, and a review of bilateral agreements like the Indus Water Treaty. The resolution further underscored Pakistan's direct role in key terror incidents that shook India, such as the 2001 Parliament attack, 26/11 Mumbai attacks, 2016 Uri attack, and the 2019 Pulwama bombing, while also pointing to its global footprint in events like the 9/11 attacks and the 2015 Paris carnage. The resolution urged the govt of India to introduce legislation designating Pakistan as a state sponsor of terrorism and enforce a complete freeze on economic and trade relations. This also includes Pakistan's re-inclusion in the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list and further lobbying for their inclusion in the black list.
