UPDATED: Ahly win 45th Egyptian league title - Egyptian Football

Ahly were crowned Egyptian Premier League champions after a 6-0 thrashing of Pharco FC on Wednesday. Palestinian striker Wessam Abou Ali stole the spotlight, scoring a super hat-trick for the Red Devils, while winger Hussein El-Shahat and midfielder Emam Ashour netted the fifth and sixth goals, respectively, to complete the rout. The reigning champions entered the clash atop the league standings with 55 points, two points ahead of second-placed Pyramids FC, meaning a draw would suffice to retain the title in front of a massive crowd. Ten minutes into the first half, Moroccan winger Achraf Bencharki initiated a swift counterattack, threading a precise pass to Ahmed 'Koka' Nabil on the left flank, to deliver a pinpoint cross to Abou Ali, who converted from close range with a right-footed shot into the centre of the goal. Three minutes before halftime, Bencharki weaved through the left side before setting up Abou Ali for a second clinical finish. The decisive moment arrived 10 minutes after the break when Pharco FC goalkeeper Mohamed Shika received a red card for a reckless challenge on Emam Ashour following a VAR review. Abou Ali completed his hat-trick in the 61st minute, curling a free-kick into the bottom right corner with his right foot. Ahly coach Emad El-Nahas then introduced fresh legs, including Ali Maaloul, Mohamed 'Afsha' Magdi, and goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir. Tunisian left-back Maaloul's emotional cameo marked his final appearance for the club before his contract expired, as he assisted Abou Ali's third goal with a measured cross. Hussein El-Shahat extended the lead to 5-0 in the 75th minute, latching onto Abou Ali's cross and slotting home from six yards. Ashour sealed the rout in added time with a powerful shot from inside the box after a brilliant backheel from El-Shahat. Ashour's spectacular form The 27-year-old emerged as Ahly's talisman this season. With 13 goals Ashour tops the scoring charts—a goal ahead of NBE Club's Osama Faisal and two ahead of Zamalek's Nasser Mansi, who retains a game in hand. He was instrumental for the team in key games and a major source of inspiration throughout the season. The talented midfielder was named Man of the Match on 7 occasions, the most won by any player this season. Ahly will depart for the U.S. next week to prepare for the FIFA Club World Cup. Ashour claims refereeing injustice cost Al-Arabi Zain the Premier League title

KUWAIT CITY, May 14: Al-Arabi Club President Abdulaziz Ashour expressed strong dissatisfaction with the refereeing decisions during the current Zain Premier League season, claiming that officiating errors played a key role in denying his team the league title. Ashour specifically pointed to controversial incidents in several matches, saying, 'In our first-leg match against Kuwait Club, the referee sent off our Mauritanian professional Abdullah Mahmoud after we were awarded a foul. Ironically, Abdullah was the one fouled, yet he received the red card.' He continued, 'There was another case where a Kuwait Club player who had already received a yellow card committed another offense that warranted a second yellow—and consequently a red card. However, the referee instead chose to show a yellow card to Hussein Ashkanani to avoid sending off the Kuwait Club player.' Ashour also criticized Mexican referee Ramos, who officiated its game against Al-Qadsiya. Ramos issued multiple yellow cards, eventually making it easy to send off Hassan Hamdan. He also refereed our decisive game against Kuwait Club and distributed yellow cards to several players. During halftime, players told me he was handing out cards excessively. We also had a clear penalty shout for Jumaa Aboud that went ignored.' He added, 'Even earlier in the match, we were denied another penalty, and the referee failed to consult VAR. It's clear to me now that this referee knew exactly what he was doing. I'm convinced we were robbed of the match.' Ashour held the Kuwait Football Association accountable for what he described as a "refereeing injustice" and expressed hope that the federation would not impose harsh penalties on Al-Arabi in light of the post-match events.

Libya weighs salary tax and fuel subsidy cuts in economic reform push

The Central Bank of Libya (CBL) has expanded talks with the House of Representatives' finance committee, with participation from the Government of National Unity and the rival eastern authority, as part of efforts to activate a stalled economic reform agenda, sources at the CBL told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed. The draft plan under discussion includes imposing a new tax on high public-sector salaries, partially or fully lifting fuel subsidies, and implementing sweeping austerity measures. These would include downsizing Libya's diplomatic missions abroad and suspending ongoing development projects to curb public spending. Economist Ezzedine Ashour described the reform package as largely superficial, warning it avoids core structural issues such as entrenched corruption, weak governance, and heavy dependence on oil revenues. Ashour cited the Central Bank's 2021 attempt to devalue the Libyan dinar, which was meant to stabilize public finances but faltered amid institutional instability and rising government expenditure. 'It didn't ease the liquidity crisis or improve purchasing power,' he said, noting that the move instead triggered higher import prices and fueled inflation. Tags: CBL

PM chairs 1st meeting of national council for education, innovation

CAIRO, May 7 (MENA) - Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli chaired on Wednesday the first meeting of the National Council for Education, Research, and Innovation (NCERI) on Wednesday, signaling a major push to overhaul the country's education and research systems amid rapid technological advancements. The meeting was attended by a host of statesmen, including Deputy Premier and Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Deputy PM for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel el Wazir, Defense Minister Abdel Majeed Saqr, Interior Minister Mahmoud Tawfik, Higher Education Minister Ayman Ashour, Education Minister Mohamed Abdel Latif and Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk. Madbouli stressed the council's role in aligning Egypt's pre-university and higher education systems with global shifts especially as regards the application of artificial intelligence (AI). He said the meeting tackled current challenges in Egypt's education and innovation landscape. Ashour outlined progress in seven strategic axes: integration, interdisciplinary specializations, connectivity, active participation, sustainability, international benchmarking, and innovation and entrepreneurship. Highlighting integration, Ashour discussed aligning academic and research institutions with regional economic activities to bolster national development. He referred to the 'Alliance and Development' presidential initiative, promoting regional partnerships among government entities and industry players. The minister showcased initiatives linking scientific research with industry, including the electric vehicle rally in New Alamein and the development of low-speed electric vehicles suited to smart cities. Notably, Egypt produced its first EU-certified, domestically-manufactured ventilator. Other efforts include the EV-Tech project for low-speed vehicle technology transfer and a model agricultural tech research farm in Marsa Matrouh. Ashour emphasized creating programs blending specializations aligned with future job markets and upskilling faculty. Regarding global connectivity, he said 337 joint academic programs are being run with foreign partners across Egyptian universities. He highlighted the 'Egypt Scholarships and Educational Tourism' initiative and efforts to align education with labor market skills through university career centers, which have helped place thousands of graduates. Ashour underscored the active role of higher education in economic and societal development. He noted university hospitals—125 facilities supported by over 31,000 faculty—serve millions with quality healthcare services and are integral to national health campaigns, including early cancer detection and the 'Decent Life' initiative, which has deployed over 1,000 medical convoys. He also detailed student engagement initiatives such as '100 Days of Sports,' 'Learn with Health,' and 'Empower,' aimed at health, inclusion, and labor market readiness. On sustainability, the minister cited the expansion of Egypt's university infrastructure, growing from 50 institutions in 2014 to 116 by 2025. The international benchmarking axis focuses on enhancing global rankings and accreditation for Egyptian institutions, thereby attracting more international students and bolstering overseas campuses. Ashour discussed fostering a startup ecosystem through TV programming, attracting 20,000 student participants and 976 startup proposals, with EGP 82 million in total funding. He also introduced the National Network for Talents and Innovators. Ashour announced the launch of the Japanese-style ELKosen colleges in Egypt from September 2025, in collaboration with JICA. The first campus in 10th of Ramadan City will offer five-year programs in robotics, AI, green energy, and microelectronics, modeled on Japan's technological institutes. Education Minister Mohamed Abdel Latif addressed school overcrowding, noting emergency measures such as dual shifts, space optimization, and six-day school weeks, alongside long-term plans to build up to 15,000 classrooms annually. He claimed student density had dropped below 50 per class, with an average of 38. To address teacher shortages, he highlighted hiring initiatives, increased pay, and new policies extending teacher service until August 31 of each academic year. These moves reportedly filled over 90% of teaching gaps. Abdel Latif detailed reforms in secondary education, reducing course loads and introducing a proposed Egyptian Baccalaureate focused on critical thinking and interdisciplinary learning. A nationwide survey of students is currently informing this reform. Alaa Ashmawy, head of the National Authority for Quality Assurance and Accreditation, outlined progress in raising private institute standards and aligning national qualifications frameworks with international benchmarks. Established by a presidential decree issued by President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, the council reports directly to the president of the Republic with the aim of laying down National Strategy to develop education, scientific research, and innovation, reviewing national priorities in education, research, and innovation across various sectors and improving the educational process.
