Government launches implementation phase of Egyptian Genome Project by handover of athletes' data

Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development and Minister of Health and Population CAIRO – 26 May 2025: Egypt launched the implementation phase of the Egyptian Genome Project on Sunday with the handover of athletes' genome data ( aka Gene-Next) . The athletes' genome handover ceremony was attended by Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development and Minister of Health and Population; Dr. Ashraf Sobhi, Minister of Youth and Sports; and Dr. Awad Tag El-Din, Advisor to the President for Health and Prevention Affairs, besides other officials. Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar emphasized the crucial role of the Egyptian Genome Project in advancing both athletic excellence and public health. He noted that the more extensively Egyptian genomes are analyzed, the greater the potential to design targeted health programs and reduce disease prevalence. Highlighting the government's commitment, Abdel Ghaffar stated that President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's directives and the broader state vision prioritize science as the cornerstone of national progress and people as the core of development. He affirmed full state support for this national scientific endeavor, which reflects a firm belief that true human development begins with a comprehensive understanding of individuals—genetically, physically, and mentally—to unlock their full potential. In his remarks, Dr. Ayman Ashour expressed pride in the project, describing it as the first of its kind in Africa and the Middle East, with an investment of EGP 2 billion. He characterized it as a major leap forward for scientific and medical research in Egypt. The project, which began in 2021, is overseen by the Ministry of Higher Education and the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology. It brings together a coalition of 15 universities, research institutions, NGOs, and four ministries, with implementation led by the Center for Medical Research and Regenerative Medicine.

Foreign Governments Evacuate Citizens from Tripoli

Countries across the globe are racing to evacuate their citizens from Tripoli following the eruption of deadly armed clashes between rival Libyan factions. The violence, which broke out in key neighbourhoods of the capital, has triggered international concern and urgent diplomatic responses, including evacuation plans and safety warnings for foreign nationals. Italy has taken swift action to evacuate 120 of its citizens and around 20 Spanish nationals who were stranded in a Tripoli hotel after participating in the Libya Construction Expo. The Italian government is organising a special flight from Misrata, as Tripoli's main airport remains closed due to the fighting. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani confirmed that the safety of Italian nationals is a top priority and that those willing to return will be evacuated by the end of the day. Turkey is also considering evacuation plans for its citizens. The Turkish embassy announced it is working to arrange a Turkish Airlines flight from Misrata to Istanbul and may provide buses from Tripoli to Misrata, prioritising children, women, and the elderly. Turkish nationals have also been advised to monitor flight schedules operated by Libyan airlines. Egypt, meanwhile, is carriyng out a targeted evacuation. Egyptian Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhi contacted several Egyptian footballers and coaching staff based in Libya to ensure their safety. A group including coach Hossam El-Badry and players like Mahmoud Kahraba are either en route to Cairo or preparing to leave via Misrata. Other countries, including France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States, have issued joint statements expressing deep concern over the violence. They called on Libyan authorities to protect civilians and welcomed reports of a ceasefire. The European Union has urged full accountability for crimes committed and stressed the importance of dialogue and de-escalation. As clashes continue to threaten stability in Tripoli, the international community is on high alert, taking coordinated steps to safeguard their nationals and support diplomatic mediation efforts. FM reaffirms Egypt's commitment to supporting peace, stability worldwide

This came during the Foreign Minister's participation, alongside Ashraf Sobhi, Minister of Youth and Sports, in the opening ceremony of the fifth edition of the "Gamal Abdel Nasser Fellowship for International Leadership." The program is held under the patronage of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, under the theme: 'Egypt and the United Nations: 80 Years of Representing the Global South's Causes,' with the attendance of 150 participants representing 80 countries. Minister Abdelatty welcomed the youth from the Global South participating in the fellowship, stressing that Egypt is always proud to host initiatives that enhance the role of youth and strengthen bridges of cooperation and mutual understanding between nations. He outlined the fundamental principles underpinning Egypt's foreign policy, noting that it stems from a balanced vision and clear strategy established by President Sisi since 2014. The minister highlighted Egypt's firm belief in the importance of a multilateral system as the foundation of a fair and balanced international order. He emphasized the indispensable role of the United Nations as a platform that reflects the collective will of the international community, highlighting Egypt's active participation in UN institutions. He reiterated Egypt's full commitment to working towards reforming the international system, including the structure of the global financial system and the UN Security Council. He noted that these institutions, in their current form, do not fully reflect the interests of the Global South or fairly address the aspirations of its people for justice and balanced representation. In a related context, Minister Abdelatty addressed the priorities of Egypt's foreign policy in the field of sustainable development, pointing out that 'Egypt Vision 2030' is a comprehensive strategic framework based on principles of social justice and empowerment, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. He affirmed Egypt's leading role in climate change issues, especially after hosting the COP27 Climate Summit, and the subsequent initiatives aimed at supporting green transition and financing climate projects in developing countries, particularly in Africa. The Minister also highlighted the importance of digital transformation and artificial intelligence as key drivers of future development, stressing that Egypt continues to utilize these tools in line with its national interests and development goals. Minister Abdelatty reviewed Egypt's stance on key regional issues, noting that the region is witnessing alarming developments, especially as the foundational principles of the international system are increasingly being questioned. He addressed Israel's continued violations of the core principles of international law and international humanitarian law, as well as its repeated breaches of the UN Charter. He reiterated Egypt's condemnation of using starvation as a weapon of collective punishment against the Palestinian people, warning that such actions create an extremely dangerous international environment that threatens global peace and stability, and requires urgent and serious international action to restore respect for the rule of law and immediately halt these violations. He called for greater solidarity among countries of the Global South in the face of escalating challenges that threaten international peace and security. He emphasized that achieving a fairer and more stable global system begins with a full commitment to the principles of international law and the UN Charter, and a rejection of practices that impose will through force or undermine national sovereignty. The foreign minister said that the current moment requires the Global South to unite in defense of shared rights and interests, and to build a global order that respects national sovereignty and is based on justice, equality, and cooperation.
