SINGAPORE -- A consortium led by Singapore Telecommunications and Japan's NEC will build a high-capacity subsea cable linking the two nations, amid surging demand for data infrastructure driven by artificial intelligence and cloud computing.
The 8,900-kilometer Asia United Gateway East cable project, announced Wednesday, also links Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea and Taiwan, Singtel and NEC said. The cable, expected to be completed by 2029, will use the latest fiber-optic technology and feature a high-count fiber pair system, allowing it to carry vast volumes of internet and data traffic.
