SUV hits man, flinging him into drain in Noida; police launch probe as video goes viral

A Mahindra Thar SUV rammed into a man, sending him flying into a roadside drain in Noida's Sector 53 on Monday, the police said Tuesday, adding that they have registered a case and are trying to trace the accused. The incident, a video of which has gone viral, appeared to be the fallout of an online spat. 'On Monday, a scuffle occurred between two groups near Sector 53, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Sector 24 police station,' said Sumit Kumar Shukla, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP), Noida. 'A video also went viral in which one party rammed the other with their vehicle. When we investigated, we found that the dispute between the two parties happened over some comments on Instagram,' the ADCP stated. Both groups are familiar with each other, he said. In a purported video of the incident, a man who is bleeding through his nose can be seen walking alone on the streets when a black Thar hits him from behind and sends him flying into the empty drain. The man, identified as Saurabh, 24, said he had gone to meet a friend in Noida along with his younger brother. 'My friend had called me saying that a group of men had been misbehaving with him. When we reached there, I realised that these were the same men who had earlier filed a case against us which was quashed over lack of evidence.' 'They soon started attacking us with sticks, rods and knives. They hit me with the Thar twice,' he alleged. The Sector 24 police have registered a case for rash driving, causing hurt, and criminal intimidation. 'We have sent the injured people for a medical examination and have formed three teams to nab the accused and take the vehicle into possession,' Shukla said. The police are trying to identify the accused and arrests will be made soon, the ADCP added. Neetika Jha is a trainee reporter with The Indian Express, Delhi. Noida: Man arrested for assaulting, forcing youth with special needs to eat chillies

A 35-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly assaulting and mistreating a youth with special needs in Noida, police said. 'We arrested Shubham Saxena, a Shahjahanpur resident, after an FIR was registered against him on Monday,' said Anuj Kumar Saini, Station House Officer (SHO) of Sector 49 police station. The youth is autistic, he added. Saini said the father of the youth had installed a CCTV camera in his son's room in April. 'In the CCTV camera footage, Saxena, who used to teach the youth, could be seen pinching and forcing him to eat chillies… He could also be seen giving him certain medicines,' he added. The incident came to light on April 24, when the father, a businessman, checked the CCTV footage of his son's room. In a police complaint filed on Monday, the father alleged that Saxena had been teaching his son social skills for the last two years. 'My son cannot talk. So, I hired Saxena two years ago,' he told the police. 'On April 24, when I checked the recording, I found out that he had been hitting my son. He had been pressing a pen between his two fingers, forcing him to open his mouth… forcing him to eat foreign substances,' the father alleged in his complaint. 'I doubt he has been doing this with my son for the last two years. Please take action against him,' he added. This is the second such incident in the recent past when a specially-abled person was found being assaulted in Noida. On March 29, the police had booked four persons, including the principal, the vice-principal, and a teacher of a private school for special children, for allegedly hurting and assaulting a 10-year-old student. The school, said police, has since been sealed after it was found to be unauthorised. The teacher, meanwhile, has been arrested. Neetika Jha is a trainee reporter with The Indian Express, Delhi. 6 arrested for raping minor in Jharkhand

Six persons were arrested for allegedly kidnapping and raping a minor girl in Jharkhand's Gumla district, police said Tuesday. On Saturday, the accused, aged between 18 and 24 years, had come to attend a wedding in a village. They were a part of the wedding procession that had arrived from Simdega district. Police said the minor, along with three other girls attending the wedding, went out to relieve herself when six men approached and started to molest them. 'Three girls managed to escape, but the men took one minor girl into the forest and gangraped her. After the girl was unconscious they threw her into a bush in the forest,' said the SP, Gumla, Shambhu Kumar Singh. After an FIR was registered by the victim's father on Sunday, the police searched various locations and arrested all six accused on Monday. They were remanded in judicial custody. The arrested accused were identified as Surendra Nagesia, Vimal Kumar and Sanju Ram from the Sursang police station area of Gumla district, and Arpan Roshan Soreng, Dinesh Tirkey alias Nitin and Amardeep Kullu, residents of the Pakartand police station area of Simdega district. New Delhi: The Wire's five-part multimedia series 'Breaking the Nets: An Oral History of India's Fisherwomen' has been awarded the 2024 K.P. Narayana Kumar Memorial Award for Social Impact Journalism by the Asian College of Journalism (ACJ), recognising its powerful storytelling and focus on marginalised voices. The award was presented during the ACJ Awards ceremony held on May 3 at the college's campus in Chennai. ACJ noted that the series – reported by Shamsheer Yousaf, Monica Jha and Sriram Vittalamurthy – 'documents the struggles as well as the triumphs of India's fisher women.' The citation praised the series as 'visually rich and well narrated,' commending how it 'highlights the grit of the women who have battled all odds to earn a livelihood and lead a life of dignity.' 'Breaking the Nets' sheds light on the often invisible labour of over 12.3 million women engaged in India's fishing sector. Through oral histories and immersive multimedia reportage, the series chronicles stories of resilience across six Indian regions, including the Sundarbans, Gulf of Mannar, Odisha, Puducherry, Mumbai, and Bihar. Among the narratives featured are that of Urmila Sardar, who continues fishing in the Sundarbans despite the trauma of losing her husband to a tiger; Namma Thayi, an 80-year-old seaweed diver from Tamil Nadu; Vedavalli, who challenged a caste panchayat in Puducherry; and Chandrakala Devi from Bihar, who, along with other women from the Mallah community, reclaimed village fish ponds from upper-caste landlords who had enslaved them. The series not only brings forth the everyday struggles of fisherwomen but also underscores their collective efforts to assert rights, access public spaces and challenge patriarchal and caste hierarchies. It calls attention to how government policies have failed to formally acknowledge their labour in the fishing economy. This year, the Social Impact Journalism Award was jointly awarded to The Wire's team and journalist Vandana Menon for her story on Rajasthan's pension-deprived elderly, published in ThePrint. 'Breaking the Nets' has also been shortlisted in two categories – the Journalism Prize and the Opening Up Prize (public vote)—at the New Media Writing Prize. As part of this recognition, the series will be archived by the British Library. The final winners of the international prize will be announced on May 14. The ACJ Awards jury comprised Kalpana Sharma, veteran journalist and columnist; Priya M. Menon, independent journalist and journalism advisor; and Harikrishna Katragadda, documentary photographer and visual artist. This year, the awards received 240 entries from 101 organisations in four languages. Read the series here.
