True crime tales: The surge of real-life inspired thrillers in Mollywood
(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) 'Based on a true story' — this is surely one of the most chilling aspects we see, especially in a horror or thriller movie, which makes us feel that 'Oh my gosh!' moment. Such true crime stories create an emotional impact on audiences that can never be achieved through a fictional or fabricated narrative. (Picture Courtesy: Facebook) 'I believe it is a topic that needs to be spoken' - Tovino Thomas about 'Narivetta' Tovino Thomas' recent film 'Narivetta' re-tells the story of the 2003 Muthanga incident. The film is inspired by real-life events, though it is not a direct retelling of a single true story. In an earlier post, Tovino Thomas penned, 'I believe it is a topic that needs to be spoken about boldly and discussed. I hope it will be a film that will make you enjoy it with all your heart in the theatre and make you think after leaving the theatre.' The movie is receiving decent reviews from the audience. 'Kooman' and 'Human Sacrifice' issue Jeethu Joseph and Asif Ali's thriller film 'Kooman' arrived at a time when Kerala was shocked by the Elanthoor human sacrifice case. Although the Asif Ali starrer is in no way related to the incident, the exact timing made the audience feel connected to the story and created a chilling effect. Listen To Popular Malayalam Official Audio Songs From 'Kooman' Jukebox Featuring Asif Ali The same goes for the horror thriller film 'Romancham'. The overall setting, humor, and scary atmosphere worked in a fictional kind of way among the audiences, until the last title 'Based on a true story' popped up on the screen, showing the real-life photographs and characters. (Picture Courtesy: Facebook) 'We tried to understand the mental conflicts involved in honor killings' - Tharun Moorthy Mohanlal and Tharun Moorthy's recently released thriller 'Thudarum' may not be directly linked with the 2018 Kevin murder case in Kerala, but the audiences reminisce such honor killing incidents that happened, once the end credits roll. Thudarum - Official Teaser Talking to OTT Play, Tharun Moorthy said, 'It is not based on anyone's personal life. We tried to understand the emotional arcs and mental conflicts involved in honor killings.' Tharun Moorthy said that 'Thudarum' is entirely fictional and they took only reference from such incidents to ensure authenticity. The impact of true crime tales A crime thriller delivers a much stronger impact when it is based on real events or executed with reference to them. However, this doesn't necessarily mean that a story will lose its impact if it isn't drawn from actual incidents. LQ players capable of handling pressure: Asif Ali
Asif Ali is long overdue for a match-winning knock and will be aiming for one in the HBL PSL X eliminator against Karachi Kings today. PHOTO: PCB Pakistan's experienced middle-order batter Asif Ali, representing Lahore Qalandars in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10, has shared his thoughts ahead of the crucial match against Karachi Kings. Speaking ahead of the Eliminator scheduled at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on May 22, Asif acknowledged the heightened pressure of the knockout stage but expressed confidence in the professionalism of all players involved. "It's the knockout stage and a big match, so naturally, there will be pressure," Asif said. "However, all the players are professionals, and I don't think anyone will let the pressure affect their performance." The right-handed batter also commented on the team combination and recent performances. "With the combination that has been made, hopefully, there will be good cricket. In the previous matches, batting was not going well, the team combination has been made, hopefully, we will go with the same combination. Sam Billings was performing; when a player like him leaves, it affects the combination," he said. Reflecting on setbacks, the middle-order batsman highlighted the importance of learning from mistakes. "If you lose a match, you review the errors and work on improving them. Every player has goals, and my focus remains on the upcoming games. If Pakistan or the selectors need me, I am ready to serve," he said. The 33-year-old also addressed rumors regarding his international comeback. "I am playing cricket and haven't given much thought to a comeback, nor is it my primary goal right now. If the selectors needed me, they would have called me up. I believe they don't need me at this moment," Asif stated humbly. "I celebrated a special occasion recently, but I stay grounded and focused on my game," he concluded. It is pertinent to mention that the two-time PSL champions Lahore Qalandars led by Shaheen Afridi secured their place in the playoffs after finishing fourth in the points table. They ended the group stage with five wins, four defeats, and one match washed out due to rain in 10 games. Mehidy Hasan Miraz joins Lahore Qalandars Lahore Qalandars have received a timely boost ahead of their high-stakes Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 Eliminator clash against arch-rivals Karachi Kings, scheduled to take place at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on May 22. Kerala Box Office: Asif Ali's Sarkeet to end poor theatrical run grossing JUST Rs 2.15 crore
Asif Ali is among the most prolific new-gen actors of Mollywood. The actor has delivered the kind of performances that would get every other actor of his generation to envy. His run before the release of Sarkeet was exceptional with both Kishkindha Kaandam and Rekhachithram emerging major blockbusters. Sarkeet has changed the tides in a way that no one could have imagined, and it is for the worse. Sarkeet, an intended feel-good drama, opened to a very poor number of Rs 35 lakh gross and the trend of the film has also not been too good. By the end of the 2nd weekend, the movie has amassed Rs 2.03 crore gross in Kerala and the lifetime run should end in the vicinity of Rs 2.15 crore or so. These numbers are much lower than what Asif Ali's previous two films Kishkindha Kaandam (41 crore) and Rekhachithram (27 crore) earned in the state. Sarkeet has been running parallely with two films that are doing reasonably well in the state, namely Prince And Family and Padakkalam. Not to forget, holdover release Thudarum is wrecking the Kerala box office like no one's business and is the number one film in the state since its release. With Rs 109 crore gross at the Kerala box office by the end of the 4th weekend, it is safe to assume that the Mohanlal starrer will become the first Indian film to breach the Rs 125 crore club in the state as well. Watch the Sarkeet Trailer Asif Ali will be analyzing all of his film Sarkeet's theatrical shortcomings when it drops on OTT in a little over two weeks. Sarkeet has not really been panned by those who watched. It is just not preferred over the other concurrently running films. From our analysis, we believe that audiences enjoy watching Asif Ali in thrillers more than any other genre. Mollywood audiences have yet again shown that while they can take a film to the highest of highs, they can also collectively ensure that a film sees a fate similar to Sarkeet, if they don't like it as much. They are generally indifferent about the actors performing and thus we see such contrasting collections of the same actor's films. Pinkvilla shall closely be monitoring the theatrical biz of Asif Ali's upcoming films. Stay tuned for more news on Asif Ali.
