Kota Kinabalu: A 32-year-old man was sentenced to nine months jail by the Magistrate's Court for escaping from lawful police custody while at the Penampang Health Clinic, two months ago. Mohd Asroy Adonara, a freelance air-condition technician, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to have deliberately fled from police custody while being lawfully detained at the Penampang Health Clinic, Penampang, on June 6 this year, at 10.30pm. Advertisement Asroy, whose case came up for mention on Tuesday, changed his plea to guilty to the charge under Section 224 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to two years or fine, or both, on conviction. He had on July 3 claimed trial to the charge. The fact of the case presented by the prosecution stated that on the morning of June 6, at 10.25am, Asroy was escorted by police personnel to the Emergency and Treatment Room of the Penampang Health Clinic after he complained of chest pains. Following an examination by a doctor, Asroy was placed on bed rest. Advertisement While the complainant was consulting medical staff regarding further treatment, Asroy suddenly leapt off the bed, pushed open the nearby emergency door, and ran out of the clinic compound in an attempt to flee. Police immediately pursued the accused and successfully re-apprehended him outside the clinic. Asroy was brought back into the clinic for further medical attention and handcuffed before being taken back to the Penampang police station lock-up, where he was placed in a cell without further incident. He was ordered to serve the sentence from June 6. In another case, an unemployed man was jailed seven months for having a stolen welding machine. Md Shaurey Masdi pleaded guilty to having the stolen machine at 3.30pm, on June 17, by the roadside of Kg Rampayan, Manggatal. The charge, under Section 411 of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of up to five years' imprisonment, a fine, or both, on conviction. The facts of the case, presented by the prosecution, stated that the item was stolen during a break-in at a premises in Manggatal.
