SEC releases final photo electoral rolls for BTC polls
Guwahati: The Assam State Election Commission (SEC) on Wednesday released the final photo electoral rolls with a total electorate of 26,58,477 for the upcoming Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections, likely to be held by the end of September, as hinted by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma earlier. The rolls cover all 40 constituencies across the five districts of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) — Kokrajhar, Udalguri, Baksa, Chirang, and Tamulpur. The rolls include 81 newly added villages, following a delimitation exercise undertaken by the state govt. Of the total voters, 13,23,673 are men, 13,34,787 are women, and 17 belong to the third gender. A total of 3,279 polling stations have been proposed, though this number is subject to change. The final list of polling stations will be published on August 18, after rationalisation is completed. Voters can verify their names using their EPIC number or by downloading details from the citizen corner on the SEC's website. To boost voter participation, the state commission has announced that claims for enrolment will be accepted until the last date of nomination filing, provided the applicants are eligible under the ECI's current summary revision and are listed in the supplementary roll with a valid EPIC. Phase-1 panchayat polls in 14 Assam dists today
Guwahati: Voting for the first phase of the high-voltage panchayat elections in Assam will take place on Friday, with poll preparations completed across 14 districts in upper, northern and Barak Valley districts of the state that are going to the polls. Polling will commence from 7:30 am amid tight security and is scheduled to conclude at 4:30 pm. About 11% of the total polling stations have been identified as "critical" after assessment of their previous polling history, officials in Assam State Election Commission said. Critical polling stations are determined based on factors such as abnormally high polling percentage and a single candidate receiving a large proportion of votes in the last election held in a particular area. The rural polls are going to be a united BJP-led alliance taking on a divided opposition, as the latter could not come to concensus due to differences regarding seat sharing. In the first phase of the two-phase polls, there are 216 zilla parishad constituencies and 94 anchalik panchayat constituencies, while the number of gaon panchayats stands at 1,139. The number of polling stations for the first phase is 12,916. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Finger Shape Says a Lot About Your Personality, Read Now Tips and Tricks Undo Over 89.60 lakh voters are registered to cast their vote in the first phase election, of whom about 44.66 lakh are male voters and 44.93 lakh are female voters. The districts going to the polls in the first phase are: Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Majuli, Jorhat, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Cachar, Hailakandi and Sribhumi. A total of 639 candidates are contesting for the posts of zila parishad members, whereas for anchalik panchayat members, 2,608 candidates are in the fray. "It's a large scale exercise. For the first time, we have introduced lots of randomization and IT intervention. Districts have really worked hard, and we feel that the main objective, which is free, fair and transparent election, will be far improved than previous panchayat polls," state election commissioner Alok Kumar told TOI on Thursday. In an effort to make the panchayati raj system at the grassroots "free from politics", candidates contesting for the posts of ward members of the gaon panchayats were not permitted to be sponsored by political parties in this election. They have not been allotted symbols of any recognised political party, and their personality is likely to be the most important factor in winning. Candidates contesting for anchalik and zilla parishad members' posts, however, can be sponsored by recognised political parties and have been given the symbols of their respective parties.
