Punjab Assembly Speaker suspends 26 opposition members
The Speaker of the Punjab Assembly Malik Ahmed Khan on Saturday suspended 26 members of the opposition party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), for disrupting Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz's speech and causing chaos in the assembly session, according to Aaj News. The Assembly Secretariat confirmed that the suspension was issued under Rule 210(3) of the Assembly Rules, barring the members from attending the next 15 assembly sittings. During the session, opposition members shouted slogans, engaged in physical shoving, and tore official documents, violating the assembly's rules of conduct. The Speaker 'condemned' their behavior, saying such disorderly conduct damages the dignity and discipline of the House. He acknowledged that while protesting is a right of assembly members, it must follow the limits set by the Constitution and parliamentary procedures. The Speaker emphasized that maintaining order in the assembly is essential and will be strictly enforced. The suspended lawmakers include Malik Fahad Masood, Muhammad Tanveer Aslam, SSyed Riffat Mehmood, Yasir Mahmood, Kaleem Ullah, Ansar Iqbal, Ali Asif, Zulfiqar Ali Shah, Ahmad Mujtaba Chaudhary, Imtiaz Mehmood, Ali Imtiaz, Muhammad Ejaz Shafi, Sajjad Ahmad, and others. The suspension came after the opposition's loud protests disrupted the assembly during the Chief Minister's address, forcing the Speaker to take action to uphold the assembly's dignity and ensure smooth proceedings.

AAP MLAs barred from PAC meet
NEW DELHI: Amid allegations of disruptive behaviour by AAP MLAs during a meeting of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta has asked them to withdraw from the next sitting. The Speaker has said that if opposition members refused to follow the direction, they may be removed from the sitting. The PAC was constituted to examine the CAG reports tabled in the Vidhan Sabha earlier in March. Its members include BJP MLAs Ajay Mahawar (Chairman), Arvinder Singh Lovely, Kailash Gahlot, Raj Kumar Chauhan, Satish Upadhyay, and Shikha Rai. AAP MLAs—Leader of Opposition Atishi, Kuldeep Kumar, and Virendra Singh Kadiyan—are also part of the panel. PAC Chairman Ajay Mahawar alleged disruptions and violent behaviour by opposition members, including LoP Atishi, during the last committee sitting in a written complaint. It was also noted that during the first sitting on May 22, the AAP members—led by Atishi—questioned the committee's authority to examine CAG reports in light of the GNCTD (Amendment) Act, 2021. They demanded the Law Department's opinion before the proceedings could continue. This confrontation is part of a broader debate over the scope and authority of Assembly Committees following the 2021 amendment. Responding to Atishi's letter dated May 6, Speaker Gupta defended the amendments, stating they were essential due to past misuse of committee powers. He asserted that while committees must operate within legal boundaries, they retain sufficient authority under the Constitution and Assembly Rules, including the power to examine all CAG reports. In his communication, he said Assembly Committees play a critical role in ensuring accountability and transparency in governance, and 'their powers cannot be nullified by administrative interpretations.'

BENGALURU: Karnataka Assembly Speaker U T Khader on Friday rejected the conditional resignation by Sugar Minister Shivanand Patil. Patil, Basavanabagewadi MLA, had submitted his resignation earlier in the day daring Vijayapura MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal to quit. Patil said he would contest against him in the event of a bypoll in Basavana Bagewadi. Khader said that it was not possible to accept Patil's resignation. 'I told Patil that Yatnal has neither resigned as an MLA nor has he met me to submit his resignation. Yatnal's resignation has not been received by the Assembly either. I told Patil that it is not possible to accept his conditional resignation as per the Assembly Rules.
