AAP MLAs barred from PAC meet
NEW DELHI: Amid allegations of disruptive behaviour by AAP MLAs during a meeting of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta has asked them to withdraw from the next sitting. The Speaker has said that if opposition members refused to follow the direction, they may be removed from the sitting.
The PAC was constituted to examine the CAG reports tabled in the Vidhan Sabha earlier in March. Its members include BJP MLAs Ajay Mahawar (Chairman), Arvinder Singh Lovely, Kailash Gahlot, Raj Kumar Chauhan, Satish Upadhyay, and Shikha Rai. AAP MLAs—Leader of Opposition Atishi, Kuldeep Kumar, and Virendra Singh Kadiyan—are also part of the panel.
PAC Chairman Ajay Mahawar alleged disruptions and violent behaviour by opposition members, including LoP Atishi, during the last committee sitting in a written complaint.
It was also noted that during the first sitting on May 22, the AAP members—led by Atishi—questioned the committee's authority to examine CAG reports in light of the GNCTD (Amendment) Act, 2021. They demanded the Law Department's opinion before the proceedings could continue.
This confrontation is part of a broader debate over the scope and authority of Assembly Committees following the 2021 amendment. Responding to Atishi's letter dated May 6, Speaker Gupta defended the amendments, stating they were essential due to past misuse of committee powers. He asserted that while committees must operate within legal boundaries, they retain sufficient authority under the Constitution and Assembly Rules, including the power to examine all CAG reports. In his communication, he said Assembly Committees play a critical role in ensuring accountability and transparency in governance, and 'their powers cannot be nullified by administrative interpretations.'

Congress won't allow rewriting of Constitution: CM Siddaramaiah
BENGALURU: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday hit out at RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale for pitching for the removal of the terms 'socialist' and 'secular' from the Preamble of the Constitution. 'This is not a casual remark. It is part of a long-standing agenda to reshape India's democracy in their ideological image,' Siddaramaiah said, adding that the statement has come from a leader of the RSS, which is like the high command for the BJP. 'I urge Prime Minister Narendra Modi to express his views in this regard to the nation,' Siddaramaiah added. The CM said that when the Constitution was formed, the words 'socialist' and 'secular' were not there in the Preamble. But then, RSS started targeting on secularism and socialism, and the then PM Indira Gandhi had to amend and included these two words, which has been accepted by people,' he said. The CM alleged that RSS refused to accept the Constitution when it was adopted. 'Then RSS chief MS Golwalkar praised the Manusmriti as a more authentic guide for India's culture and rejected democracy and equality as Western imports. This is the organisation now claiming to protect Indian values,' Siddaramaiah added. Delhi CM flags off new DEVI e-buses
NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday flagged off 105 new orange-coloured DEVI (Delhi EV Inter-connector) electric buses and inaugurated the newly built Sector A9 depot in Narela, calling it a step towards cleaner and more efficient public transport for the capital. The CM said the depot was completed in just 90 days and claimed it reflects the BJP government's commitment to deliver on promises made to Delhi residents. She also took a jibe at the previous AAP government, accusing it of pushing Delhi Transport Corporation into losses. 'Buses are Delhi's lifeline. But under the previous government, routes were cut, buses reduced and corruption seeped in,' she said. Referring to the CAG report, Gupta claimed that DTC had incurred losses amounting to Rs 65,000 crore during the AAP govt. She alleged even the free bus ride scheme for women was marred by corruption and panic buttons were installed 'just for show'.
