A's catcher MacIver gets go-ahead hit, throws out runner to end game in big league debut at age 28
Associated Press WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Willie MacIver hit a go-ahead single in the eighth inning of his major league debut. Minutes later, the 28-year-old catcher threw out a runner trying to steal second for the final out that ended the Athletics' 11-game losing streak. 'I woke up hoping for a Gatorade bath at the end of the game and, man, I've never felt such a good feeling with such cold water,' he said after the A's beat Philadelphia 5-4 on Sunday and stopped the Phillies' nine-game win streak. MacIver was among five players brought up from the minors on Friday. He started Sunday in place of Shea Langeliers in the day game after a night game. 'This is part of the talk that we had in spring training, it was going to take the whole army that was in the room,' said manager Mark Kotsay, who watched the end from the clubhouse following his first ejection this season. MacIver, hitting .389 with two homers and 30 RBIs at Triple-A Las Vegas, grounded out in the second and fourth against Jesus Luzardo, then struck out in the sixth. After Trea Turner homered in the eighth off Hogan Harris for a 4-3 lead, another Friday call-ups sparked the rally. Logan Davidson walked and scored on Lawrence Butler's triple against Matt Strahm. MacIver fouled off a fastball, then drove a cutter into center field to bring home the go-ahead run. 'I'm always upset about walks,' Strahm said. 'I just feel like I've had too many too close together.' A day after blowing a ninth-inning lead, Mason Miller allowed a two-out single in the ninth to Alec Bohm. Johan Rojas pinch ran and MacIver, who had been in the minors since 2018, threw to shortstop Jacob Wilson, who tagged the sliding Rojas on an elbow. 'I had family here, friends, teammates, ex-teammates,' MacIver said. 'It's a dream come true. I can't even put it into words.' Rojas at 29.9 feet per second has the fifth-highest sprint speed in the majors among players with 10 or more opportunities, according to Statcast. MacIver was selected by Colorado in the ninth round of the 2018 amateur draft from the University of Washington. He played in the 2021 Futures Game with Bobby Witt Jr., Julio Rodríguez and Spencer Torkelson. MacIver became a minor league free agent last November and signed a minor league contract with the Athletics a month later. 'I'm so grateful for my family and for my support system,' he said. 'They've been everything to me and I obviously wouldn't be here without them and like I can't thank them enough. ... The fact that they could be here and see my first hit and how that game ended, man, it's awesome.' Davidson started at first a day after Nick Kurtz left the game because of a left hip issue. He had two hits and two RBIs a day after a forgettable debut. Davidson entered as a pinch runner for Kurtz in the 10th inning. He was thrown out at the plate, called for obstruction and ended a 9-6 loss by striking out. 'There's a lot of confidence that I have in this kid,' Kotsay said. 'I've invested a lot of time, we've had a lot of conversations through the last two seasons about what it was going to take for him to be a big leaguer and he has not backed down from anything that I've given him and to see the reward come today and just his first start and contributing and having such an impact to the win, was awesome.' ___ AP MLB: recommended

Angels star Mike Trout resumes running, inches closer to return after knee injury
Associated Press WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout has started to do some light running as he works to return from a bone bruise in his left knee that has kept him out of the lineup for the past three weeks. Trout told reporters on Tuesday that he ran at about 50% intensity on Monday and that he plans to run harder later this week. The three-time MVP was hurt trying to beat out an infield single on April 30 against the Seattle Mariners. The 33-year-old was hitting .179 with nine homers and 18 RBIs before the injury. He's missed substantial time in three of the past four seasons because of various injuries. The 11-time All-Star has been hitting in the cages and playing catch during his recovery. Yankees pitcher Marcus Stroman has a setback in his rehab from a left knee injury
Associated Press WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — New York Yankees pitcher Marcus Stroman had a setback as he tries to return from a left knee injury that has sidelined him for the last month. Manager Aaron Boone said Stroman still had 'discomfort' in his knee after throwing a live batting practice session in Tampa, Florida, on Friday and will be reevaluated before the team figures out the next step in his rehabilitation process. 'He's gotten a lot of treatments on it and stuff,' Boone said Sunday. 'It just can't kind of get over that final hump to really allow him to get to that next level on the mound. We'll try and continue to get our arms around it and try and make sure we get that out of there.' Stroman hasn't pitched since allowing five runs in two-thirds of an inning against the San Francisco Giants on April 11. He was placed on the 15-day injured list the next day with what Boone hoped at the time would be a short-term absence. But there is no timeline for his return, and Boone said that injury likely impacted the way Stroman pitched before going on the IL. He was 0-1 with an 11.57 ERA in three starts. 'Certainly that last start, I think he just couldn't really step on that front side like he needed to,' Boone said. 'I talk about how these guys are like race cars, and one little thing off and it can affect just that last level of command or that last level of extra stuff that you need. So we'll continue to try to get him where we need to.' Stroman had surgery on March 19, 2015, to repair a torn ACL in his left knee. He returned to a major league mound that Sept. 12. The 34-year-old Stroman is in the second season of a two-year contract guaranteeing $37 million. The right-hander's deal includes a $16 million conditional player option for 2026 that could be exercised if he pitches in at least 140 innings this year. Last season, Stroman was 10-9 with a 4.31 ERA in 30 games (29 starts) when he threw 154 2/3 innings, his most since 2021 with the Mets. Stroman struggled in the second half and did not pitch in the postseason, when the Yankees made their first World Series appearance since 2009. In other injury news, DJ LeMahieu played for the second straight day on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday and could join the team in Seattle this week to make his season debut. LeMahieu recently had a cortisone injection last week in his right hip, an injury stemming from last year. ___ AP MLB: recommended

Jasson Dominguez becomes youngest Yankees player with a 3-homer game
Associated Press WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Ever since Jasson Dominguez made his debut in the majors as a prized 20-year-old prospect, the New York Yankees have been expecting big things. Dominguez delivered in a big way on Friday night, becoming the youngest player in the rich history of the Yankees franchise to hit three home runs in a single game. 'Tonight was special,' Dominguez said. 'When I hit the third one, I was telling myself 'No way. There's no way.'' Dominguez did it, capping the memorable night with a grand slam in the eighth inning of a 10-2 win to supplant Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio in the Yankees' record book. At 22 years, 91 days old, Dominguez is the youngest player in Yankees history with a three-homer game, beating DiMaggio's mark set in 1937 against the St. Louis Browns by 109 days. 'That was incredible,' said teammate Aaron Judge, one of three other Yankees in history with a grand slam during a three-homer game. 'Just even going back to spring training, the guy goes out there wins a job. The work I saw him put in on the back field when no one was really looking on the defensive side, the work in the cage. To see him have a game like this tonight, three homers, is pretty special.' Dominguez came into the season considered the top prospect in the Yankees system after brief stints in the majors in 2023 and '24. That hadn't translated into big league success until Friday night's breakout performance with three homers — one right-handed and two left-handed — and seven RBIs. Dominguez came into the game with two homers on the season and eight in 191 career at-bats since making his debut in the majors in 2023. 'That's awesome,' said starter Will Warren, who played with Dominguez in the minors. 'It's always been there. Hopefully he had the spark tonight and continues with that.' Dominguez started his big night with a solo shot in the third inning against Osvaldo Bido. After a sacrifice fly in the fifth, he added another solo shot against Hogan Harris in the seventh for his first homer in the majors from the right side of the plate. He capped the night with the grand slam in the eighth against Elvis Alvarado. 'Very impressive, manager Aaron Boone said. 'Just really, really quality at-bats by him. He's capable of things like that. Obviously the two lefty kind of similar, high kind of moonshot no-doubters. And the right-handed ball was absolutely scorched." Dominguez become the fifth player this season with at least three homers in a game. Judge did it against Milwaukee on March 29, with Cleveland's Jose Ramirez and St. Louis' Ivan Herrera also hitting three in a game. Eugenio Suarez had a four-homer game for Arizona against Atlanta on April 26. ___ AP MLB: recommended
