Jagadish, Shwetha Menon Among Leading Names For Key AMMA Positions
Last Updated: Jagadish and Shwetha Menon are likely contenders for AMMA president. Mohanlal is likely to skip the contest. Baburaj and Joy Mathew are vying for general secretary. With Thursday marking the last date for filing nominations for the 17-member executive committee of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), the distribution of nearly 110 nomination forms indicates an intense electoral contest ahead. AMMA currently has around 500 members. Speaking to IANS, popular comedian and character actor Jagadish confirmed that he will contest for the post of president. 'In the outgoing committee, I was one of the two vice-presidents. When the fresh elections were announced, I hoped either Kunchacko Boban or senior actor Vijayaraghavan would take over as president. But since both opted out, I decided to step in. I have already started reaching out to members for support," he said. Jagadish also noted that actor Shwetha Menon is likely to enter the race for the president's post. Meanwhile, actor Raveendran, known for his villain roles, said that incumbent president Mohanlal has clearly conveyed that he will not contest this time. 'Mohanlal has expressed his reluctance to continue, as he has been unfairly blamed for the actions of others. This has deeply hurt him," Raveendran said. He added that he, too, has collected nomination forms and that with the deadline set for 5 p.m. today, more clarity will emerge soon. Actors Baburaj and Joy Mathew are among those vying for the key post of general secretary. Unlike previous elections, there appears to be no official panel contesting as a bloc this time. Most candidates are expected to run independently. Mohanlal and his team were elected in 2024 for a three-year term. However, the explosive revelations in the Hema Committee report last year triggered a crisis in AMMA. Matters escalated when the secretary and actor Siddique resigned after being accused of misconduct by a former actress. Following Siddique's resignation, more allegations against other actors surfaced. Subsequently, Mohanlal announced his unwillingness to continue, prompting the entire 17-member executive committee to step down. An ad hoc committee led by Mohanlal has been overseeing affairs since then, until fresh elections could be scheduled. At AMMA's recently held annual general body meeting, it was decided that a new executive will be elected through a democratic process on August 15. The final list of candidates will be known by July 31, the last date for withdrawal of nominations. If multiple candidates remain in the fray, voting will be held on August 15. view comments First Published: July 24, 2025, 16:41 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Hectic parleys begins as new AMMA office bearers to be elected on Aug 15
Kochi; Ever since the explosive Hema Committee report surfaced last year, the affairs in the Malayalam film actors body -- Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) has been fluid. Things went for a toss after the incumbent Secretary of AMMA -- popular actor Siddique resigned after a former actress pointed fingers at him of misbehaviour. Soon thereafter names of other actors also surfaced accusing them of similar behaviour. Seeing all this the AMMA President Mohanlal made it clear that he was not keen to continue, forcing the entire 17-member executive to resign. Following this, the committee under Mohanlal was asked to continue in the capacity of ad hoc committee until fresh elections are held. At the recently held annual general body, the decision was made that on August 15 a new executive should be appointed through a democratic process. Now with the last date of nomination coming up on July 24 and on July 31 it will be known if there is going to be voting. With around 500 members in AMMA, it's going to be a race against time as hectic parleys have started on the name of candidates who will be going to contest. With Mammootty now undergoing treatment and Mohanlal has already announced that he is done with anymore posts, the race has begun. By now factions have also emerged with one section led by State Transport Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar, who is already controlling the body of Television and Serial actors, he is keen to be a kingmaker in the film actors association too. Another faction who are keen to make it to the helm includes actor Baburaj who has started to make the vital moves. While there is another group which wants college professor-turned-actor Jagdeesh to take the lead. Yet another section is trying to see if a compromise can be reached to avoid an election, but their plans have reached a dead end when veteran actor Vijayaraghavan backed out, so did popular actor Kunchacko Bobban. Incidentally, the outgoing committee which was elected in 2024 had its term till 2027, but circumstances saw that it had a premature end when Mohanlal expressed his inability to continue. Many AMMA members now lament that with the passing away of comedian Innocent, who was the President for 15 years till 2018, things have not been the same as he had the knack of running AMMA through his deft handling without hurting the ego of any through his jokes.

Shine Tom Chacko apologises to Vincy Aloshious during Soothravakyam promotions after drug-related misconduct: ‘If you were hurt, I am sorry'
All seems to be well between Malayalam actors Shine Tom Chacko and Vincy Aloshious. The Jana Gana Mana actor had earlier been accused by Vincy of misbehaving on the sets of their film Soothravakyam, allegedly under the influence of drugs. However, the two recently reconciled their differences during the film's promotions in Puthukad on Tuesday. During an interaction with the media, Shine publicly apologised to Vincy. When asked if there were any issues between them, Shine responded, 'Do you see any problems between us by looking at us?' — hinting that everything was fine between the two. Vincy, too, denied any ongoing feud. Vincy even spoke about her admiration for Shine and his career, revealing that she had sought his advice before becoming an actor. However, she admitted that it was unexpected to see Shine under the influence of drugs on the set. Vincy's statement prompted Shine to apologise publicly. He said, 'I did not expect it. If you were hurt, then I am sorry.' In April, Vincy had accused Shine of inappropriate behaviour on the sets of Soothravakyam and lodged a formal complaint with the Kerala Film Chamber. She also approached the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) regarding the alleged misconduct. However, she did not file a police complaint. Just days after Vincy's complaint, Shine was arrested under Sections 27 (consumption) and 29 (conspiracy for drug abuse) of the NDPS Act. The action was taken after he allegedly escaped during a police raid at his hotel in Kochi. His chats and digital payment details reportedly helped the police establish a prima facie link between him and drug peddlers. This was the second drug-related case against Shine. Earlier this year, he was acquitted in a 2015 cocaine case. Shine Tom Chacko is also going through a difficult time in his personal life. Last month, the actor was involved in a car accident that claimed the life of his father. He was travelling with his family from Ernakulam to Bengaluru for his de-addiction programme when the accident occurred.
