Project Kennan: Xbox's handheld breaks cover in leaks, Asus ROG Ally 2 prototype spotted
Image via Xbox. The first images of the Asus ROG Ally 2 have appeared online as a result of official certification from the US Federal Communication Commission (FCC), but there is a catch: the gaming handheld comes in two versions, one of which has an Xbox button. The Asus ROG Ally gaming handheld range, which is marketed as a rival to Valve's Steam Deck, enables users to play PC and Android games while on the go and supports marketplaces like Steam and GOG. Xbox themed Asus ROG Ally 2 images get leaked The Xbox button is placed directely above the D-pad. (Image via FCC) These leaked images have been uncovered first by 91mobiles from an Indonesian certificate filing, and VideoCardz , on the other hand, linked them in an FCC listing . They display two new ROG Ally consoles: a black model with a single button with the unpainted but recognizable Xbox emblem, and a white, vanilla counterpart. Some restricted specifications are also revealed in that listing, including a 7-inch, 120Hz LCD display that is comparable to the first generation. The Xbox edition comes with an 8-core, 36W AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme CPU, while the white version has a less potent 4-core, 20W chip. According to the images, the Xbox button was next to the left stick and above the D-Pad. The next Xbox tablet, code-named Project Kennan by Microsoft, will be more powerful than the white ROG Ally 2 tablet. Additionally, instead of the ROG Ally's blocky, sloping form, the design now features additional molded controller grips on each edge. As of now, there is no official release date available for these consoles. Given that certification is already underway, a release is probably imminent. Computex, which starts on May 20 and is just one day after Microsoft's own Build conference starts on May 19, is where Asus frequently releases new gear. Project Keenan, an Xbox portable that has been the subject of months of rumors and is supposedly scheduled for release this year. But it's not the Xbox portable console. Instead, it appears to be a Windows gaming device made by Asus, a third-party manufacturer. It's still unknown if Windows 11 or a custom made dedicated Xbox operating system will be used in the Xbox version of the ROG Ally 2. The next Xbox ROG Ally 2 is expected to have robust compatibility for Xbox Game Pass, just like other Asus ROG Ally tablets that are currently on the market. However, all leaks must be treated with caution until ASUS and Microsoft release official information. Read More: Here's what Microsoft may be planning for its handheld Xbox console

The Asus ROG Ally 2 May Have an Xbox Button and Wonky Grips
The Asus ROG Ally 2 may include a dedicated Xbox button, plus some contoured grips. The Xbox handheld is reportedly real, and it already looks really strange compared to PC handhelds we're used to. Leaked images found on government certification sites offer a glimpse into what is likely Asus' upcoming ROG Ally 2. It's a successor to the ROG Ally released in 2023 and expected to have a more powerful processor and a dedicated Xbox button. While the Asus-Microsoft handheld is turning away from the Steam Deck's brick-like design, the idea of contoured grips may be the thing that takes this device over the top. 91Mobiles found entries at Indonesia's certification office referencing two new models for the Asus ROG Ally 2, and VideoCardz dug up Wi-Fi module listings from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission that you can now see for yourself. Judging by the timing for these filings, we could see the new ROG Ally 2 PC handheld and the Xbox version as soon as this month, perhaps during the Computex computing conference in Taipei, Taiwan set for May 19. ROG Ally 2 RC73XA Black 20V 5A 100W RC73YA White 20V 3.25A 65Whttps:// — Huang514613 (@94G8LA) May 7, 2025 Included in the leaked specifications and images are two models of the supposed sequel to the ROG Ally (though we expect the real deal won't be absolutely filthy with fingerprint smudges). Both the black and white versions house a separate button to the left of what's normally the switch to access Asus' Armoury Crate software. The black version includes an outline for what appears to be the Xbox logo, which indicates this could be the device's rumored Xbox button. The switch may allow quick access to the Xbox app or some other function for the model running Windows. We won't know until we eventually see it in person. Specs-wise, the ROG Ally 2 could be on the higher end of modern handhelds with a 7-inch, 120Hz LCD display and an AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme chip that was announced alongside the Lenovo Legion Go 2 back during CES 2025. The black Xbox version may be even more powerful. That APU (accelerated processing unit) is an 8-core processor with a max 36W TDP (thermal design power), allowing it to draw more power from the battery for better in-game performance. The less powerful Ally 2's processor sits at a mere four cores with a 20W TDP. It's very close to the processor that's in the Steam Deck. It may be closer in performance to the AMD Ryzen Z2 Go based on the chipmaker's Zen 3 architecture found in the Legion Go S. The top-end Ally 2 may have up to 64GB of RAM. The versions spotted on the Indonesia listings reportedly came with up to 2TB of storage. The most striking aspect of the new design is the two molded grips on either end of the device. While it looks odd compared to the traditional brick-like Steam Deck or older ROG Ally design, it actually reminds me more of the Xbox controller—in a good way. We all gave a little chuckle back when Sony released its PlayStation Portal since it was essentially a PlayStation DualSense controller split in half with a display in the middle. But, hell, I enjoy the feel of both the DualSense and Xbox controllers that contour around the palm. The only hangup I can see is whether your palms may dig into the sharp corners where the grips meet the device's main body. There's a reason these designs for controllers stick around. The most comfortable handheld I've used is the 8-inch Legion Go S with its larger grips, but that device suffered from lower performance considering its $730 price tag. Both ROG Ally 2 models should have two USB-C ports on the top of the device (none on the bottom, apparently). The new handhelds should also have two back buttons, just like the original ROG Ally. The $800 Asus ROG Ally X stood out from the pack because of its larger amount of RAM combined with an 80Wh battery that helped it last longer than other PC handhelds. We have yet to do our own tests of the Z2 Extreme APU beyond handling trying out the Legion Go 2 earlier this year. It seemed powerful enough, but time will tell how much. As it stands, the Intel Lunar Lake-powered MSI Claw 8 AI+ beats the Ally's Z1 Extreme chip in raw performance, but it now costs $1,000 and you'd be lucky to get one in the states. Judging by rising prices everywhere, we don't expect the ROG Ally 2 will be a cheap device by any standard.

Asus' upcoming ROG Ally 2 could be the Xbox handheld we've all been waiting for
It seems that the Xbox handheld might be less of a dream and more of a reality, given the latest leaks. We just got new leaked images of the Asus ROG Ally 2, which will rival some of the best gaming handhelds, and there's a major surprise in there for Xbox fans. We've been hearing about Microsoft's upcoming Xbox-branded handheld for months, but this is the first concrete proof that the device actually exists. The big reveal here is that the handheld might come in the form of a next-gen Asus ROG Ally. Images of the handheld in two variations leaked due to regulatory listings, which gives us a good idea of what they'll look like. Recommended Videos First spotted by 91mobiles and VideoCardz, the listings reveal the Asus ROG Ally 2 — which is the official name spotted in the documentation — in its full glory. The handhelds, available in black and white, have seen slight design changes. We're seeing molded controller grips, which make the ROG Ally 2 look quite bulky, and two USB-C ports at the top edge of the handheld. While the grips will likely stay the same as in these photos, I could imagine the ports being moved to a more convenient location, although it's hard to say right now. Other than the color, the most important change between the two ROG Ally devices is that the black version features a dedicated Xbox button. This implies that it might not be a Windows-based handheld like the previous models; it could run on Xbox OS. Equally, it could still run on Windows while being deeply integrated with the Xbox ecosystem. One way or another, something's happening, and it's exciting. The two handhelds are also said to vary a lot in terms of specs, at least if the leaked listings are to be believed. The black model with the Xbox button, also referred to as the ROG Ally 2 RC73X1, comes with AMD's Ryzen Z2 Extreme CPU (eight cores, 36W), a 7-inch 120Hz display, and 64GB of LPDDR5X-8533 memory. Meanwhile, the non-Xbox model seems to be a huge step down, with the AMD Aerith Plus (four cores, 20W) CPU. Leaks aside, it's very possible that we'll learn more about these two devices in the coming weeks. Computex 2025 is right around the corner, so by the end of this month, we might know more about the Asus ROG Ally 2 and the Xbox handheld. Please enable Javascript to view this content

Asus ROG Ally 2 leak reveals what Xbox handheld may look like — and it comes with big upgrades
After teasing the first Xbox gaming handheld, a new leak shows off a first look at Asus' ROG Ally 2 — and it comes with a few key upgrades. Spotted by 91mobiles, the US FCC website has revealed details on the Asus ROG Ally 2, which is set to arrive in two models. Images of both handhelds (via @94G8LA on X) show it will come in black and white, but the former reveals a dedicated Xbox button near the menu buttons on the left-hand side. Codenamed Project Kennan, Asus' upcoming handheld was expected to come with Xbox integration, and it now appears the upcoming ROG Ally 2 will have an Xbox edition. The console also has controller-like grips, but otherwise has a similar layout to the Asus ROG Ally X. You may like As per the filing, the black edition is set to arrive with an AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme chip, with 8 cores and 16 threads, and 36W TDP. This is a substantial step up in performance over the ROG Ally (with a Ryzen Z1 Extreme), meaning it looks to be a true next-gen gaming handheld. It's also expected to come with up to 64GB of DDR5X memory and up to 2TB for storage. We can also expect a 7-inch 120Hz display (via VideoCardz). Although, if you look closely, there still seems to be similar display bezels as with its predecessor. Image 1 of 2 (Image credit: 94G8LA / X) (Image credit: 94G8LA / X) We also get a look at the ROG Ally 2's top, which shows two USB-C ports instead of one, alongside what looks like a HDMI port. This may turn out differently once the handheld arrives, but it's interesting to see how multiple USB-C ports will be used. As for the white edition (named Gardenia White), this noticeably has the same menu button as the black edition, although this doesn't have the Xbox logo. It could mean Asus will develop an Xbox model and a base Windows 11 edition, but this is still up in the air. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. According to the listing, the white ROG Ally 2 will feature a different "AMD Aeirth Plus" chip with 4 cores and a 20W TDP. So, this model could be a more affordable version of the handheld, similar to how the Lenovo Legion Go S is set to arrive in multiple configurations (one with SteamOS). Image 1 of 2 (Image credit: 94G8LA / X) (Image credit: 94G8LA / X) The Asus ROG Ally 2 has yet to be officially announced, but the company has already teased the first Xbox handheld. Now, the leak gives us a good idea of what to expect. Based on previous launches, its expected to be revealed during Computex 2025 in May, so keep an eye out for the big launch. Will the Xbox price rise affect the ROG Ally 2? (Image credit: Future) With the ROG Ally 2 leaked images showing a dedicated Xbox button, it's looking likely that this handheld is the Xbox and Asus partnership we've been hearing about. However, that means it could be affected with a price hike. Recently, Microsoft raised the price of Xbox consoles, with the Xbox Series X seeing a $100 jump due to "market conditions" (a.k.a. tariffs). If the ROG Ally 2 is counted as an Xbox console, the handheld could cost a lot more than expected. To put this into perspective, the ROG Ally is set at $699 and the ROG Ally X is at $799. Even the Lenovo Legion Go S with SteamOS is getting a $50 price hike, which shows that gaming handhelds are getting more expensive. And, with the leaked specs of the ROG Ally 2 showing some powerful internals (namely the Ryzen Z2 Extreme), Asus' console is looking to come at a high price. Of course, no prices or release dates have been officially announced, so we'll have to wait and see how the hugely anticipated Asus ROG Ally 2 turns out — and how it comapres to the popular Nintendo Switch 2. In the meantime, check out AMD FSR 4 could do for gaming handhelds. More from Tom's Guide

Xbox handheld pic leaks in new photos of collaboration with Asus
Photos have emerged of Xbox's upcoming Asus handheld collaboration, which is expected to be released later this year. Microsoft has been teasing plans for two separate handhelds for some time now, with one being a next gen device and the other a third party collaboration. Based on a teaser trailer from last month, the latter appears to be a team-up with Asus, which launched its own handheld gaming device, the Asus ROG Ally, in 2023. The company's collaboration with Xbox, codenamed Project Kennan, has now seemingly leaked in full, through a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) listing in the US. As reported by VideoCardz, the pictures appear to show two variants of the upcoming Asus ROG Ally 2. The white version looks like the standard version of the handheld, while the black version is believed to be the Xbox device, aka Project Kennan. There isn't much to differentiate the two systems on the surface – very dusty exterior aside – but a button on the upper left of the black device appears to show a dedicated Xbox button (it's lacking any colour, but you can just about see the 'X' outline). This same button is on the white version too, although it doesn't appear to have the same Xbox marking. According to the leaked listing, the black Xbox model will be more powerful than its white counterpart. The former is said to use the Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor with 8 cores and 36w TDP (thermal design power), while the white model uses AMD Aeirth Plus with 4 cores and 20w TDP. It's unclear whether the Xbox version will have a dedicated operating system, or if it will simply have better integration with the Xbox app through Windows. Considering Microsoft is working on another handheld though, which is a few years away, this will likely intended only as a stop-gap solution to test the market. More Trending Interestingly, Microsoft recently debuted a new 'Xbox PC' brand as part of its reveal for Gears Of War: Reloaded, so it's possible this Asus device could fit under that moniker. However, don't expect this to come cheap. The original Asus ROG Ally costs around £599 through the official store, and after Microsoft's recent price hikes due to US tariffs, it's likely this device will burn a significant hole in your wallet. Aside from the price, the big question is when this handheld will be officially shown. Microsoft has an Xbox summer showcase on June 8, but considering this is primarily an Asus device, it might instead debut at the Computex 2025 trade show on May 20, 2025.
