2 Turkish nationals missing after yacht capsizes off Terengganu

(Facebook pic) KUALA TERENGGANU : Two Turkish nationals are missing after a sailing yacht capsized in stormy waters near Pulau Yu on Tuesday, while another was rescued after drifting at sea for 25 hours. Terengganu maritime director Hamiludin Che Awang said the yacht, Daisy, had departed Pulau Tioman, Pahang, bound for Pattani, Thailand, when it overturned about 30 nautical miles from Pulau Yu. 'One victim, Ates Demiroren, was rescued by a local tugboat crew, while the yacht's captain and another man remain unaccounted for,' he said in a statement tonight. A search and rescue operation was activated at 3pm today, with patrol vessel Perkasa 48 deployed to the site. Those with information are urged to contact the Terengganu maritime operations centre at 013-7464357. Kuala Terengganu police chief Azli Noor said the men aboard the yacht were on a cross-continent voyage from Malaysia to Turkey. He also identified the yacht captain as Ahmed Volkan Ata and the missing crew member as Eser Demirkol. He said before the incident, Ahmed brought the Daisy from Port Jackson Bay, Sydney, Australia and docked in Kuantan Port, Pahang, where he met up with the other two crew members, from Krabi, Thailand, and Singapore. 'On July 28, at 5pm, the Daisy started its voyage for the first checkpoint at Pattani Port, Thailand,' he said in a statement. He also said Ates is reported to be in a weak condition and is being treated at Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital.

KUALA TERENGGANU, Aug 1 — The Turkish men who were onboard the yacht Daisy that capsized during a storm in waters off Pulau Yu here on Tuesday were on a cross-continent voyage from Malaysia to Turkiye. Kuala Terengganu district police chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor said two men, Ahmed Volkan Ata, the yacht's captain, and crew member, Eser Demirkol, while the third crew member Ates Demiroren was rescued. 'Before the incident, Ahmed Volkan Ata as captain, brought the Daisy from Port Jackson Bay, Sydney, Australia and docked in Kuantan Port, Pahang that served as a meeting point. The other two crew members, from Krabi, Thailand and Singapore, left from Kuantan on their voyage. 'On July 28, at 5 pm, the Daisy started its voyage and was supposed to arrive at its first checkpoint at Pattani Port, Thailand,' he said in a statement, adding that the yacht got caught in a storm in the waters off Pulau Yu here at 2.30 pm Tuesday and was believed to have capsized, with only Ates Demiroren managing to save himself. 'Until now, the rescued victim is reported to be weak and being treated at Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital. It is understood that the Marine Department, the Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and the Turkiye Embassy have been informed of this incident for further action. 'All matters involving the Turkish nationals will be borne entirely by the Turkiye Embassy and the rescued victim will be brought home after his condition improves,' he said. KUALA TERENGGANU, Aug 1 — The 52-year-old captain of the Turkish yacht Daisy was found last night after going missing for over 40 hours at sea when his vessel capsized during a storm in waters off Pulau Yu here on Tuesday. Kuala Terengganu police chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor said Ahmet Volkan Ata was found at 9.45 pm by a fishing boat seven nautical miles from Pulau Yu. 'The victim is now at Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital and is stable. He is not injured but will undergo further tests,' he said in a statement yesterday.
