Former Athens City Councilwoman Millie Caudle dies
ATHENS, Ala. (WHNT) — Former Athens City Councilwoman Millie Caudle has passed away, according to the city. City officials said that Mrs. Caudle died on Tuesday, Feb. 11 in Iuka, Mississippi. Caudle, a native of Mississippi, moved to Athens in the 1940s to attend what was then Athens College. The former councilwoman taught school at Elkmont and Clements and taught history at Athens State. Mrs. Caudle was appointed to serve on the Athens City Council in 2006 to complete the term of Councilman Henry White, after his election as state representative. She served as councilwoman until 2012. City officials said that she was known for her passion for the Athens-Limestone Public Library, preserving mature trees, promoting education, protecting historic districts and supporting quality of life initiatives. In 2012, she was named the 2012 North Alabama Woman of Distinction by the Girls Scouts of North-Central Alabama. Mrs. Caudle was a founding board member of Spirit of Athens, now known as Athens Main Street. She was a former member of the Athens-Limestone Public Library board of directors, and retired from Athens State University as Professor Emeritus, in 1990. 'She left us a legacy to emulate, and we were blessed to have both her love and service,' the City of Athens wrote. Services for Caudle will be announced at a later date.
