Family Of Kerala Woman Found Dead In UAE Releases Videos, Alleges Abuse By Husband

Last Updated: Athulya, a Kerala woman found dead in her Sharjah flat, was allegedly abused by her husband Satheesh, with videos of violence now surfacing. Her family suspects foul play. The family members of Kerala native Athulya, who was found dead in her flat in Sharjah on July 19, have released videos that purportedly show their daughter being abused by her husband, Satheesh, the Indian Express reported. Multiple videos of the deceased woman and her husband were being shared on social media, showing the man, believed to be Satheesh, behaving violently with Athulya. However, News18 could not independently verify the authenticity of the videos. While Athulya's death is being probed as a suicide, her parents alleged she was being harassed by her husband for dowry. A native of Chavara in Kerala's Kollam district, Athulya was found dead on July 19 in her flat in Sharjah, where she lived with her husband, Satheesh Sankar. Her father, Rajasekharan, told reporters that Athulya was planning to start a new job. 'Satheesh never allowed her to go for a job. Her plan was to find a job and stand on her own feet to look after her daughter, The Indian Express quoted the woman's father as saying. 'Last year, she had complained to me that she faced torture from her husband. However, she continued to stay with Satheesh after he apologised and promised not to repeat such acts," the father said. Earlier too, in a statement, Athulya's father had said he did not believe his daughter died by suicide, and called her death 'mysterious". 'I don't believe that my daughter will die by suicide. She shared a very intimate relationship with her daughter. Her death is mysterious," he said. 'We have to find out what exactly happened to her. He (the woman's husband) is an alcoholic. He gets violent always," the woman's father alleged. In an earlier development, Athulya's husband had admitted to beating her and justified the assault, saying he did it 'out of love". As the matter was reported, a case against Satheesh was registered under Sections 85, 115(2),118(1),103(1) and under Section 4,3 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, against Satheesh, the husband of the woman. A First Information Report (FIR) in the case also mentioned that the family had given Athulya a two-wheeler and gold as dowry during her marriage with Satheesh. Meanwhile, the police investigating the case said a team would bring the accused to Kerala once the legal formalities are completed. The postmortem report of the woman was also awaited. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Eight-member-team to probe Chavara native Athulya's death in Sharjah

KOLLAM: A special eight-member team has been constituted to investigate the death of Athulya, a native of Chavara, who was found hanging in her apartment in Rolla, Sharjah, last Friday. The probe will be led by Thekkumbhagam Police Station SHO S Sreekumar. Sources said the investigation will primarily focus on allegations raised by Athulya's family, who suspect foul play. Preliminary findings suggest that she may have died by suicide after allegedly enduring prolonged domestic abuse. 'In the coming days, we will record statements from the victim's relatives, and the husband's family members will also be questioned. The postmortem examination report and mobile phones of those involved will be crucial for the further course of the investigation,' a police source said. On Sunday, Thekkumbhagam police registered a case against Athulya's husband, Satheesh Sankar, a native of Sasthamcotta. He has been booked under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 85 (abetment of suicide of a woman), Section 115(2) (voluntarily causing grievous hurt using a dangerous weapon), Section 118(1) (wrongful restraint or confinement), and Section 103(1) (cruelty by husband or his relatives). He also faces charges under Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, which deal with the giving, taking, and unlawful demand of dowry. Athulya's mother, Thulasi Bai, complained with Thekkumbhagam police, alleging that her daughter had suffered both physical and mental torture at the hands of her husband, particularly when he was under the influence of alcohol. Athulya had reportedly approached Sharjah police in the past with complaints of abuse. Police say the abuse began soon after the couple married in February 2014. Satheesh allegedly harassed Athulya over dowry. A violent assault happened just two days before her death-Satheesh is accused of hitting Athulya on the head with a plate and grabbing her by the neck around 2.47 am on July 19 in their Sharjah apartment

Indian woman found dead under mysterious circumstances in Sharjah flat; family alleges husband strangled her over dowry

An Indian woman was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her flat in the Rolla area of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (UAE), on Saturday morning. She has been identified as 29-year-old Athulya Sekhar, originally from Kollam in Kerala. Athulya's parents have alleged dowry harassment by her husband, Satheesh. They have filed a police complaint, alleging that Satheesh strangled Athulya, kicked her stomach and hit her head with a plate between 18 and 19 July, leading to her death. They also claimed that their daughter was repeatedly harassed for not bringing enough dowry at the time of her marriage in 2014. The parents said that they had given a bike and 43 sovereigns of gold in the marriage. On the basis of the complaint, Kerala police have registered a murder case under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961 against Satheesh. Athulya's father Rajashekharan Pillai alleged that Satheesh was an alcoholic and often became violent. 'Once when she was physically assaulted, I was planning to take her back home. But he would apologise and she forgave him,' Rajashekharan said. Athulya leaves behind a 10-year-old daughter. According to media reports, Satheesh has denied involvement in Athulya's death and said he did not believe she would die by suicide. He too wanted to know what happened to his wife, he added. Insisting that Athulya's death was suspicious, Rajashekharan said: 'I don't believe that my daughter will die by suicide. She shares a very intimate relationship with her daughter. Her death is mysterious. We have to find out what exactly happened to her. He is an alcoholic. He always gets violent. She bore all the torture for her. Earlier, such issues had also happened, and a case was filed with the police. We want to know what exactly happened to her. Her family has also released videos showing Athulya with visible injury marks and her husband appearing to lift a plastic stool to hit her. The tragic incident comes days after the death of another Kerala woman and her 16-month-old daughter in Sharjah. According to the police, the woman had died by hanging herself after suffocating her child to death on 8 July. The incident had reportedly stemmed from marital dispute.
