Atipsom crackdown: Eight Malaysians among 15 suspected ‘tekong darat' arrested, over 1,000 nabbed since January
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 5 — Eight Malaysian citizens are among 15 suspected tekong darat, or ground handlers of smuggling activities, who have been arrested by the police in raids conducted under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (Atipsom) Act in Selangor since January 1 this year. General Operations Force (GOF) Central Brigade Commander SAC Hakemal Hawari said seven Indonesian tekong darat and 224 illegal immigrants were also arrested during the period. 'In the raids conducted on June 21 and July 22, the GOF team also seized drugs, suspected to be syabu, weighing 10.355 kilogrammes, and 3.6 kilogrammes of ecstasy pills, as well as vehicles, with the total amount of seizure estimated to be worth RM1.5 million,' he said in a statement last night. He said the arrests and seizures were the result of various strategic enforcement approaches targeting smuggling activities, particularly in Malaysian waters along the Selangor coast and the west coast of Johor. According to Hakemal, a total of 288 raids were conducted during the same period across Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, and Johor. This resulted in the arrest of 1,005 individuals and seizures worth RM1.1 billion, he said, adding that the success proved the GOF's commitment to combating crimes that threaten the country's security and well-being. 'The public is urged to be the eyes and ears of the security forces, channel information regarding criminal activities to ensure that the country's borders continue to remain free from encroachment and illegal activities,' he said. — Bernama

Immigration officer awaiting trial for human trafficking gets bail
The Court of Appeal granted immigration officer Hafiz Amir bail of RM15,000 in one surety. PUTRAJAYA : An immigration officer charged with human trafficking but whose trial is only scheduled to begin two years from now has been granted bail by the Court of Appeal. A three-member bench chaired by Justice Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim said Hafiz Amir suffers from asthma and has been undergoing treatment while in custody, both in prison and at a government clinic. Also on the panel hearing the application were Justices Azmi Ariffin and Choo Kah Sing. The court granted Hafiz, 33, bail of RM15,000 in one surety, and ordered that he surrender his passport to the court and report once a month to the nearest police station. Hafiz, stationed at KLIA2, and Nasrullah Bakar, 27, were charged with smuggling three Vietnamese nationals into the country at 4.40pm on June 30 last year. He was detained under Section 26B(d) of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 (Atipsom), listed as a security offence in the first schedule of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma). Under the provision, bail is not permitted except to those aged below 18, women, or who are sick or infirm. Trial has been scheduled for June 7, 2027, at the High Court in Shah Alam. Hafiz's first application for bail was dismissed. Lawyers Harpal Singh and Farah Sofea Rudin Shah appeared for Hafiz, while deputy public prosecutor Zaki Ashraf Zubair acted for the prosecution. Last week, the Federal Court allowed bail for two businessmen charged with a security offence of being members of an organised group pending the outcome of their trial with several conditions attached. In a split decision, Justice Nallini Pathmanathan said the majority judges on the three-member bench were of the view that N Nithiyan, 40, and S Hemanathan, 32, had made out a case for bail primarily due to their health conditions. Nallini said the Sungai Buloh prison system could not attend to or care for prisoners who need special medical attention.

Fitness trainer charged over staff abuse, wildlife law
SHAH ALAM: A 37-year-old fitness instructor here has been charged in court following allegations of physical abuse against his workers and for violating the wildlife protection law. The accused, who operates a popular gym, was arrested after four of his workers lodged reports on June 16, 17 and 18, individually detailing the physical and verbal abuses they allegedly suffered in their workplace. Following the reports, police arrested the suspect and raided his home in Petaling Jaya, where they found a Sri Lankan maid with no documents, who is also believed to be a victim of abuse. Police found several species of protected animals being kept as pets in his house. The suspect was remanded for three days before Petaling Jaya police obtained another six days of remand against the suspect. Shah Alam police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim confirmed that the man was charged with four counts of assault, to which he pleaded not guilty. He was released on bail. He said all four reports from the suspect's workers were being investigated for voluntarily causing hurt with a weapon, which carries a prison sentence of up to 10 years or a fine, or whipping, or both upon conviction. "All four assault cases are under the jurisdiction of Shah Alam police. Another abuse case involving the suspect, under Section 13 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act (Atipsom) 2007, is being investigated by Petaling Jaya police. The case involves allegations of severe mistreatment of a domestic worker by the suspect." Iqbal said the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) was roped in to investigate the suspect after police found a lutong (langur), a wildcat and a sun bear at his home. "Perhilitan is pursuing the case against the suspect under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010".

Bids to smuggle in migrants foiled

SEMPORNA: Marine Police foiled two attempts by two speed boats to smuggle in migrants via Pulau Boheian waters on Sunday. Sabah Region Four Marine Commander, ACP Mohd Nazri Ibrahim, said the speed boats were apprehended in Ops Taring Gelora conducted in the areas. 'Inspection found that the speedboats were carrying 25 passengers attempting to enter the state without permission. 'The boat skipper admitted they were paid and from the Philippines and wanted to enter Semporn,' he said. Mohd Nazri said all those detained and the seizures estimated worth RM65,237 were taken to the Semporna Marine base for further action. He said both cases are being investigated under Section 26A of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (Atipsom) Act 2007 and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
