Auburn conquers Troy behind late Ike Irish single
Auburn baseball returns to Plainsman Park Wednesday to battle in-state foe North Alabama just one day after winning a thriller over Troy. Auburn won its first midweek contest of the season on Tuesday, taking down Troy, 7-6. The first two innings provided fireworks for those who enjoy great offense. Deric Fabian hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the 1st inning as part of a four-run set. The Trojans answered in the top of the 2nd inning by scoring five runs to jump ahead. Former Tiger Mike Bello scored two runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings of the game, both on RBI singles. Auburn chipped away at the Trojan lead and ultimately tied Troy in the 6th inning, 6-6. Ike Irish delivered the game-winning hit in the bottom of the 9th inning to score Bub Terrell and give the Tigers the walk-off victory. Fabian collected three hits and three RBI in the win, while Irish and Terrell each tallied two hits and an RBI. Freshman Jackson Sanders struck out two batters in his Auburn debut, where he allowed one earned run on two hits. Cam Tilly anchored the bullpen by striking out seven batters and allowing zero hits in three innings of work. Jett Johnston earned the win by striking out four batters over the final two innings. Auburn baseball vs. Holy Cross: How to watch, stream this weekend's series in Auburn
The Auburn Tigers open the 2025 season this weekend by hosting Holy Cross for a three-game series at Plainsman Park. Auburn baseball finished last season just over the .500 mark. However, its SEC record of 8-22 was not strong enough to earn a postseason bid. The Tigers will look to shake off the rust of last season's struggles by starting strong in its season-opening series with Holy Cross beginning Friday night at the newly-renovated Plainsman Park. One step that head coach Butch Thompson is taking this weekend to improve is revamping its pitching rotation. Auburn will start three new pitchers, including two transfers with SEC experience. Thompson says that an improved strike percentage will ultimately lead to more success on the mound. "If we are going to go from what we did last year. That's not what we have done," Thompson said of last season's strike percentage from the pitching staff. "We've been successful. The returners know it. Then we, you know, very much went and added some pieces that we think can help solve that puzzle. But we think it's a strike percentage deal and that's our number one driver."
