Former Colorado running back re-enters transfer portal, opening up a possible return
Former Colorado running back re-enters transfer portal, opening up a possible return Former Colorado football running back Isaiah Augustave announced Wednesday that he has reopened his recruitment. Augustave entered the transfer portal on April 14, committing to the Virginia Cavaliers less than a week later. After leading the Buffs with 384 rushing yards last season, it was surprising to see Augustave end up in the portal. Now, the former three-star recruit is back to square one. Could Augustave return to Boulder? It certainly is possible, but it has not been common under head coach Deion Sanders. Colorado desperately needs running back help, and Augustave is the highest-ranked available player, according to 247Sports. A return to Colorado would make Augustave the second CU player to return to the program after entering the portal. Linebacker Jeremish Brown spent a week in the portal in December before returning to Colorado. When Augustave committed to Virginia, Sanders called out the Cavaliers for taking one of his players. "Virginia, you've got to stop," Sanders said after a spring practice session. "I let you have one [Augustave] and didn't say nothing about it." Speculation was rampant that Augustave received a substantial amount of NIL money to depart Colorado for Virginia. In the current state of college football, Augustave's deal breaking down could have led to him decommitting. Sanders and Colorado also lost running back Brandon Hood to UMass this offseason. The only addition to the room is Incarnate Word standout DeKalon Taylor, who joins returners Charlie Offerdahl, Dallan Hayden, and Micah Welch. Any help the Buffs can get at running back is crucial, as the coaching staff strives to improve an area that struggled significantly in 2024. Colorado currently has 28 transfer portal commits, a class that ranks No. 19 nationally and No. 2 in the Big 12 Conference, according to 247Sports. Colorado's leading rusher from last year officially enters transfer portal
Colorado's leading rusher from last year officially enters transfer portal A week after being removed from Colorado football's spring roster update, running back Isaiah Augustave has officially entered the transfer portal. Augustave, Colorado's leading rusher in 2024, was a surprise entrant into the portal, as he was penciled in as the starting running back entering the season. His departure leaves an opening for true sophomore running back Micah Welch to grab the lead running back job. Deion Sadners and company will likely look to add a running back later this spring from the transfer portal. Augustave transferred to Colorado after spending his first collegiate season at Arkansas. Many thought he was one of the best backs in the transfer portal last year, and his performance showed there was talent there. He just was not used a ton in pass-heavy offense. In 2024, Augustave led the Buffs with 384 yards on 85 carries and four touchdowns. He also flashed in the passing game with 11 receptions for 62 yards. Before he arrived in Boulder, Augustave played in 11 games and made one start for Arkansas as a true freshman. He totaled 202 yards and a touchdown on 35 carries. Colorado football's leading rusher unexpectedly leaves the program
Colorado's running back room which did not have many bright spots last season received some surprise news Wednesday afternoon when the Buffaloes spring roster got an update. The Buffaloes' leading rusher from last season, Isaiah Augustave is no longer on the team. The junior running back has not been seen at CU's ten spring practices, but many assumed he was injured. Augustave is now a candidate to enter the transfer portal when it opens up on April 16. The news comes ten days before Colorado's spring game on April 19. Augustave was set to play a key role in the Buffs' new-look offense in 2025 with the departure of quarterback Shedeur Sanders and two-way star Travis Hunter to the NFL draft. The team also added NFL Hall of Fame running back Marshall Faulk as running backs coach to help out the struggling run game. The running back rushed for 384 yards and four touchdowns last season, to lead the team in rushing as a sophomore. However, he was still expected to compete with Micah Welch and Dallan Hayden for the starting job. The departure could mean Deion Sanders and Colorado will look to add another running back when the transfer portal opens ahead of the 2025 season. However, the departure does open the door for players like Welch or Hayden to become the top running backs while sophomore utility player Drelon Miller should also play a significant role in the backfield.
