Panthers 2025 training camp tracker: Top takeaways and observations from Day 14
After sorting themselves out from this past weekend's preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns, the Carolina Panthers returned to the practice field on Monday. Here are the top takeaways and observations from the latest outing of training camp . . . Center secured The Panthers put a cap on one of the biggest position battles of the summer, naming Austin Corbett their starting center for 2025. Head coach Dave Canales explained the choice to reporters. "We decided to make that decision knowing that this week, going to Houston with the joint practice and then having the game, we felt like those reps just kinda solidifying who's the starting center gonna be with Bryce [Young]," he said after practice. "It's a good time to kinda transition to where he's getting more of those reps versus splitting them day after day. "It was really close. I'll be honest. I thought Cade [Mays] did a fantastic job—orchestrating the group when he was out there, getting his snaps off on time, moving people in the run game, anchoring the pass. It was a really close competition and I think Corbett just kinda brings a level of leadership that kinda just edged him out." After serving as the starting right guard in his first two seasons for the Panthers, Corbett made the switch to center ahead of the 2024 campaign. But his season would be cut short due to biceps injury he sustained in Week 5. Mays then went on to start at center in eight of Carolina's final nine games. A surprise bubble candidate? Between a strong offering in Friday's exhibition contest and a sparkling showing on the practice field this morning, wideout Jalen Coker has recently commanded quite a bit of attention. Nonetheless, Canales was asked if the second-year receiver could be on the roster bubble given the stiff competition in the room. "Hopefully, up to now, we're gonna play the best guys, and the guys that we can count on, the guys that make plays, the guys that make the catch," Canales stated. "And Jalen, he's open in space. He plays strong to the ball. He had two really amazing plays and a go-ball where he went up over [JaTravis] Broughton and kinda took it off of his shoulder, finished on his feet and ran the ball into the end zone. He keeps showing us like that, he's gonna be on the field playing. There's no doubt about it." Coker showed them that in the preseason opener, where he reeled in a 5-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Bryce Young. He followed that up with a pair of phenomenal catches on Monday, including a would-be 45-yard score. Another standout Cornerback Corey Thornton has also heated up this summer. Wide receiver Xavier Legette was asked to name a defender who has impressed him in training camp, and didn't hesitate to praise the undrafted rookie. "He been doin' his thing," Legette said. "Every time I go up against him, I tell him, 'I like what you're doin'.' And sometimes, he'll try to be like, 'Hey, my bad.' I'm like, 'You good, we playin' ball, man. As long as you go hard, you gon' make me better.' So he's one of the main guys that been sticking out to me." Thornton started in place of an injured Jaycee Horn on Friday. Pro Football Focus graded Thornton's performance out at 76.9, the fifth-highest mark of the Panthers defense. Panthers, Browns preparing for rough weather at Wednesday's joint practice
The Carolina Panthers and the Cleveland Browns are ready to get their feet (and everything else) wet before their preseason opener. Friday will mark the beginning of exhibition play for both teams, who are slated for kickoff from Bank of America Stadium at 7:00 p.m. ET that evening. But before getting there, they'll have to tough it out for what'll likely be a rainy joint practice on Wednesday. Head coach Dave Canales was asked about the less-than-ideal forecast after Tuesday's session, which also featured some damp conditions. "We're just gonna practice," Canales stated. "The field was great. The turf itself, there wasn't a lot of slipping. Our grounds crew have done an amazing job just making sure that it's draining properly and all that. So, we'll go out there, we'll practice. "And I think Kevin [Stefanski] kinda expects that. He texted me this morning. He said, 'It looks like rain for the next 37 days.' But it'll be good. The energy will be good. They won't even be thinking about the water, I promise you. It'll be about this opportunity to go against other pros." One of Carolina's pros, center Austin Corbett, also talked about tomorrow's workout with Cleveland. "It's actually very impressive of how well the fields handled all the water we got with this rain," said Corbett, who spent the first year and a half of his NFL career with the Browns. "Wasn't puddling up or anything. Grip was fine. We'll see how long it keeps raining today and just tellin' some of my Cleveland buddies, 'Pack an umbrella.'" Canales confirmed that the joint practice will be article originally appeared on Panthers Wire: Panthers, Browns preparing for rough weather at joint practice

Panthers re-signing TE Tommy Tremble to 2-year deal, C Austin Corbett to 1-year deal, AP source says
The Carolina Panthers are re-signing tight end Tommy Tremble a two-year deal and center Austin Corbett to a one-year contract before the start of the NFL free agency signing period next week, according to a person familiar with the situation. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Saturday because the terms of the deals have not been announced. The Panthers announced Saturday that Corbertt is re-signing, but didn't indicate the length of the deal. Tremble has mostly served as a role player during his four seasons with the Panthers, catching 85 passes for 782 yards and nine touchdowns. Corbett joined the Panthers in 2022 and played 17 games before tearing his ACL in the season finale. He has missed 25 games during the past two seasons after tearing the MCL in his knee in 2023 and his biceps last season. He's expected to battle for a starting spot with Cade Mays, who started eight games at center last season. ___

Panthers C Austin Corbett fires back at reporter: 'He doesn't know a thing about me'
Panthers C Austin Corbett fires back at reporter: 'He doesn't know a thing about me' Carolina Panthers center Austin Corbett may want the smoke. This past Thursday's offering from ESPN's NFL Nation crew highlighted 32 players (one from each team) who need a "change of scenery" in 2025. Carolina's reporter, David Newton, chose Corbett for the Panthers—suggesting that the 29-year-old veteran could be phased out by a younger and more cost-effective option in Cade Mays, and would prefer not to compete for the starting center position. Newton opines: Corbett has been limited to nine starts the past two seasons because of injuries. He wants to play for a team where there really isn't a competition for the position. That's now happening at Carolina, where Cade Mays is a younger and less expensive version who did a solid job replacing Corbett this past season. For a team in rebuild mode it just makes sense to spend money elsewhere. Well, Corbett certainly disagrees. He responded to Newton's notion via Twitter/X on Friday morning . . . The Panthers seem intent on bringing Corbett back for the upcoming campaign, as they pushed back the void deadline on his first contract to buy more time for negotiations. Carolina will have until March 11, right before the start of the new league year, to reach a new deal with Corbett Corbett, a starting right guard over his first two years in Carolina, transitioned to center in 2024. A biceps injury, however, would cut his season short after just five outings. Mays would eventually secure the starting job at center, making eight starts over the team's final nine games. The former sixth-round pick is set to become a restricted free agent.
