Miami Dolphins' Mike McDaniel: OT Austin Jackson expected to be ready for 2025 season opener

MIAMI GARDENS — Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel met with reporters before Day 10 of training camp. He addressed several injuries. Here are the highlights: Austin Jackson injury not serious McDaniel says right tackle Austin Jackson is "projected to be starting Week 1." Jackson suffered a lower-body injury Aug. 2 when he was "stepped on," according to McDaniel. McDaniel added it has nothing to do with the torn meniscus that forced him to miss nine games last season. "The bottom line for me is where he's at … he exceeded where he was playing before," McDaniel said. "We're fortunate that timetable does not appear to be into the regular season." Jackson is the man who protects quarterback Tua Tagovailoa's blindside. The upside is the next guy gets a chance and McDaniel likes what he's saw from veteran Larry Borom after Jackson was injured. Borom replaced Jackson, working with the starters. "I found out about Larry," McDaniel said. The Dolphins moved quickly to add an offensive lineman, signing Germain Ifedi before the Aug. 3 practice. Ifedi, 31, was Seattle's first-round pick in 2016. He has appeared in 117 games, starting 90, with the majority of that time coming with the Seahawks. Miami waived QB Brett Gabbert. Jaelan Phillips suffers bruise from leg whip LB Jaelan Phillips' injury scare turned out to be a bruise from being leg whipped, according to Phillips who broke the news himself on social media. McDaniel said it "might cost him one day, two tops," because of the swelling. Linebacker Willie Gay brings energy every day to practice Linebacker Willie Gay has been the talk of training camp, so … McDaniel talked about him: "He's magnetic," McDaniel said. "You can feel his presence throughout the building. What has jumped off is his energy is not a one-off thing. He brings that every day." That, McDaniel said, means each time there is a tip or overthrow, Gay is a "potential takeaway guy." Dolphins open preseason August 10 at Chicago Bears The Dolphins travel to Chicago this week where they will have two days of practice against the Chicago Bears before playing their preseason opener on August 10. On what he's looking for when the Dolphins open the preseason Sunday at Chicago, McDaniel said, "My eyes are on the first and second year players across the board." The Dolphins are about week into practicing with pads. "There were some residual wins based on the environment," McDaniel said. "The humidity was a great extra challenge. You get to push guys. With pads energy decreases when you first get them on, you want to see them respond with that energy loss." McDaniel was very happy with what he saw, saying Aug. 2 was Miami's "longest, hardest most energetic practice." Miami Dolphins LT Patrick Paul: 'I don't feel any pressure' protecting Tua Tagovailoa

MIAMI GARDENS — There can be no question after last season that moving forward, the fortunes of the Miami Dolphins revolve around quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. If he's doing an interview, chances are even Tagovailoa is going to hammer home the point that he must stay healthy. At the top of the list of players in charge of making that happen: Patrick Paul. It's a lot of pressure on a second-year left tackle — unless you ask Patrick Paul. 'No, I don't feel any pressure,' he said. All it could take is one edge rusher blowing past Paul for the Dolphins' season to go up in flames, yet Paul doesn't feel the heat? 'I've always been this confident,' he said. 'It just comes from my parenting. My dad is a very confident man and that's a guy I look up to, so I learned from him and I know what I can do.' Tua Tagovailoa knows he must make smart decisions Paul, who arrived as Miami's second-round pick last year, does not protect Tagovailoa's blind side, as you'd expect for most any other NFL quarterback. Since Tagovailoa throws left-handed, his blind side is protected by right tackle Austin Jackson. But because many of the league's top pass rushers line up on the defense's right side, that puts the onus on Paul as well as Tagovailoa himself. "Is this the right thing to do in the heat of the moment where I've got to make a split decision on should I go for the first down, should I not, should I do this on fourth down, should I not?" Tagovailoa said. "And then given the circumstances, right — is it to go to the playoffs, is it to win a must-win game. You've got to throw all of those in there. But I think the most important thing is I've got to be more selfless instead of being selfish and I'm thinking this is what the guys want from me." Paul has the advantage of recently retired Terron Armstead serving as his mentor last year. Even with Armstead on the team, Paul appeared in all 17 games, starting two at left tackle and one on the right side. As if that weren't enough of a learning experience, he said he spent the offseason studying tape of 'probably every single tackle for all of the 31 other teams.' That's before he even stepped onto the training camp practice field, where every day he faces the trio of Bradley Chubb, Jaelan Phillips and Chop Robinson. Defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver is looking forward to turning all three loose on quarterbacks at the same time. There's no reason to think it's a just smokescreen to throw off offensive coordinators. Paul knows, since he has to go against them daily. 'Oh, shoot,' he said. 'We're getting after it every single day and it's going to be fun.' Paul has the size for the job. At 6-feet-7 and 326 pounds, he stands out even among fellow offensive linemen, who aren't exactly petite. So imagine what it's like when he's out in public. 'A lot of it is curiosity,' he said. 'They're like, 'Oh, what does he do for a living?' They'll just look at you and see you're big. Most people don't say anything, but if they do, they'll just ask if you play any sports.' He does, matter of fact. Happily. 'I love this game and I love everything that it brings,' Paul said. 'That has always been my dream. So every day I come in and I'm excited. It's like Groundhog Day.' RT Austin Jackson, FB Alec Ingold latest injuries for Dolphins

August 4 - The Miami Dolphins endured a rough few days on the practice field as they ramp up for their preseason opener next week. Right tackle Austin Jackson sustained a lower leg injury on Friday, knocking him out for a matter of weeks, and fullback Alec Ingold wound up in concussion protocol after getting hurt in practice on Sunday. Jackson missed more than half of the 2024 season due to a knee injury, but coach Mike McDaniel emphasized on Sunday that the latest ailment is unrelated. "He got the (new) injury playing football and got stepped on. It has nothing to do with anything but that," McDaniel said Sunday. "And with Austin, the bottom line for me where he's at ... he knocked some rust off, he got back and, in my opinion, exceeded where he was playing before. So we're fortunate that that timetable (for his absence) doesn't seem to be into the regular season." Jackson, 25, has started 54 of his 56 NFL games for the Dolphins since they selected him with the 18th overall pick in the 2020 draft out of Southern California. The Dolphins added to their offensive line depth on Sunday by signing Germain Ifedi. A first-round pick of Seattle in 2016, he has played for the Seahawks (2016-19), the Chicago Bears (2020-21), the Atlanta Falcons (2022) and the Cleveland Browns (2024). Last year, he appeared in 15 games and made five starts. Ingold, 29, played three seasons with the Raiders before spending the past three years in Miami, including a Pro Bowl season in 2023. Last year, he had 10 carries for 17 yards and a touchdown to go with 11 receptions for 96 yards. Miami's exhibition opener is at Chicago on Aug. 10. The Dolphins begin the regular season at Indianapolis on Sept. 7. --Field Level Media

Miami Dolphins sign OL Germain Ifedi with starter Austin Jackson out several weeks with injury

Dolphins starting offensive tackle Austin Jackson will miss several weeks with a leg injury after being stepped on at practice but is expected to return by Miami's season opener against the Indianapolis Colts on Sept. 7. Coach Mike McDaniel said the injury isn't related to the knee injury that sidelined Jackson for the final eight games in 2024. "He got the injury playing football," McDaniel said Sunday. "Got stepped on. Has nothing to do with anything but that. With Austin, the bottom line for me where he's at — out of all the guys, I would say — he had some time off, he knocked some rust off, he got back and in my opinion exceeded where he was playing before, so we're fortunate that timetable doesn't seen to be into the regular season." With the injury, the Dolphins signed veteran offensive lineman Germain Ifedi on Sunday. Ifedi, who has played at guard and tackle, has 90 starts with Cleveland, Chicago and Seattle. The team also waived quarterback Brett Gabbert and activated safety Ifeatu Melifonwu off the non-football injury list. Melifonwu has missed the start of training camp, but will be a needed addition to the Dolphins secondary, which has had cornerback Kader Kohou (season-ending knee injury) and safety Ashtyn Davis (leg) go down in the first few weeks of practice. In other injury news, Jaelan Phillips, who missed most of the past two seasons with separate Achilles tendon and ACL injuries, suffered a bruise to one of his legs during practice, but McDaniel said the linebacker is only expected to miss a couple of days as the swelling goes down.
