2 men fatally wounded Friday night in Austin neighborhood
Two men were fatally wounded Friday night while they were sitting in a vehicle on the West Side in the Austin neighborhood, Chicago police said. Shortly before 11:45 p.m., a 38-year-old man and another victim, desrcibed as 30 to 50 years of age were both sitting in a vehicle in the 100 block of North Laramie Avenue. The victims were approached by someone who displayed a weapon and opened fire, police said. Both men suffered gunshot wounds to the head and were taken to Stroger Hospital where they were pronouced dead. No was is in custody for the fatal shootings and detectives were investigating.

Man critically wounded Saturday morning in shooting on West Side
An 18-year-old man was critically wounded Saturday morning on the West Side in the Austin neighborhood, Chicago police said. About 11 a.m., the victim was outside an alley in the 200 block of South Cicero Avenue when a known suspect pulled out a gun and opened fire, striking him multiple times to the face and body, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was listed in critical condition. The gunman was arrested and a gun was recovered, police said. Detectives were investigating.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson cuts ribbon on "Soul City West" corridor in Austin
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Chicago Department of Transportation celebrated the completion of a multi-million dollar transformation in the city's Austin neighborhood Friday. Johnson and other officials cut the ribbon Friday morning on an $8.7 million streetscape improvement project on Chicago Ave. in Austin known as "Soul City West." The project redesigned Chicago Ave. between Austin Blvd. and Central Ave. to create a safer and more walkable street. The improvements included wider sidewalks, new trees and landscaping along the avenue, better lighting, road resurfacing, bike lanes, high-visibility crosswalks, bus boarding islands, and safety and mobility enhancements. There are two more phases of the project which will extend east to Cicero Ave.
