Priyansh, Prabhsimran, Suryavanshi will be in contention for World Cup spot: Robin Uthappa

New Delhi [India], June 9 (ANI): Former top-order batter Robin Uthappa believes three uncapped explosive stars Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh and Vaibhav Suryavanshi will 'definitely' be in contention for a spot in India's T20 World Cup title defence at home next year. Different franchises unearthed new talents in the recently concluded 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). While some were identified as ones for the future, some knocked on the door for an immediate spot in India's T20I fold. Punjab Kings' opening pair Priyansh and Prabhsimran dazzled with their aggressive intent throughout the tournament. Apart from the young duo, 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who opened for Rajasthan Royals (RR), grabbed the headlines with his record-shattering blitzkrieg blended with caution and aggression. With the rise of the young trio, India will face a massive challenge in figuring out the best top order for next year's marquee event. Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal have spent a year away from the format. Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson have formed a new opening pair in their absence. For Uthappa, India should invest its time in the remaining T20Is to identify the best possible squad for its title defence and fully fit players to boost their hopes in the tournament. 'Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, all of them will definitely be in contention for a World Cup spot. It's about using the remaining T20s before the tournament to figure out the best 15-man squad. You already have Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan and Yashasvi Jaiswal, all Test players who can also thrive in T20s,' Uthappa said at the launch of the Australian Summer of Cricket 2025-26. 'Then there's Sanju Samson. So it's going to be a challenge figuring out who makes the cut. Fitness will play a key role -- you want a fully fit squad going into a World Cup, and I'm sure that's something the selectors and management will be closely monitoring,' he added. During his impressive run, Prabhsimran racked up 549 runs in 17 matches at 32.29 while striking over 160 with four fifties and a best score of 91. The 24-year-old finished as the eighth-highest run-getter in the tournament. His opening partner, who earned a reputation for his exploits in the Delhi Premier League, finished the season with 475 runs in 17 innings at 27.94 while maintaining a strike rate of 179.24, including a solitary century and two fifties. Suryavanshi, who came in towards the latter half of the tournament, garnered 252 runs in seven matches at 36.00, with a rollicking strike rate of above 206. (ANI)

Kuldeep Yadav could be a key bowler for India during England tour: Matthew Hayden

Matthew Hayden feels that Kuldeep Yadav could turn out to be a key player for India during their five-match Test series against England, starting from June 20. Kuldeep is expected to be India's second main spinner behind Ravindra Jadeja in the new era, as R Ashwin has retired. Kuldeep hasn't played a lot of matches outside India, and has played just one game in England before the start of the upcoming series. advertisementSpeaking at the launch of the Australian Summer of Cricket 2025-26, Hayden said that he is curious to see what India brings to England. The former Aussie opener said that the five Tests will be a tough and character testing series for the young side. Also Read: Kuldeep Yadav gets engaged to childhood friend Vanshika in private ceremony Hayden feels that Kuldeep will need to be a 20-wicket bowler for India in the series. The former Aussie opener pointed to how Australia have a stable spinner in the form of Nathan Lyon and feels each team needs to have a reliable spinner in their ranks. 'Looking ahead, I'm really curious about what India brings to England. Five Tests — that's a tough, character-testing series. We discussed it earlier — someone like Kuldeep Yadav could be a key 20-wicket bowler for them. We've had the advantage of Lyon's consistency, and his absence in the last Ashes showed the impact of losing a reliable spinner. The best teams, through every era, have always had one thing in common — stability,' said Hayden. advertisementSpeaking about Australia's chances in the WTC Final, Hayden said that they still have got the core group, but it has started to shift around a bit. However, he feels that Australia has been a very dominant team during this cycle. 'We've still got a core group in the side, but it's starting to shift in some ways. How long is Steve Smith going to play or Usman Khawaja going to continue? These are the characters sitting in that space — one that Stephen (Steve Waugh) and I have been in, and Virat's been in as well.""We've all faced that challenge where you realise maybe it's time to move on. But for this cycle, Australia has been a very dominant team. I base that largely on the fact that you need to take 20 wickets to win a Test — and this team has a world-class pace trio, much like in Stephen's (Steve Waugh's) era. They also have a world-class spinner, and I'm sure we all appreciate the skill of Nathan Lyon. That's been such a key part of how Australian teams are built,' said Watch

Robin Uthappa

New Delhi [India], June 9 (ANI): Former batter Robin Uthappa 'genuinely believes' Sai Sudharsan is one of India's future three-format players alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill after his impressive display in the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Sudharsan dazzled at the top during the Gujarat Titans' impressive run to the Eliminator in the recently concluded cash-rich league. He finished as the top run-getter in the tournament, ahead of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jos Buttler and others. The 23-year-old, who retired during GT's encounter against the Mumbai Indians in 2023, has included a couple of shots in his repertoire and notched up swashbuckling performances throughout his recent campaign. 'One name that immediately comes to mind is Sai Sudharsan. His evolution over the last couple of years has been phenomenal. Just last year, he was retired out in a game for not scoring quickly enough. And this year, he hasn't changed his technique or approach; he's just added a couple of shots, knows when to accelerate, and suddenly his strike rate has jumped from 130 to 170,' Uthappa said at the launch of the Australian Summer of Cricket 2025-26. Sudharsan carved out 759 runs in 15 matches at an average of 54.21, with a strike rate of 156.17, a century and six fifties. After his sizzling performances, Sudharsan walked away with the Orange Cap and was adjudged the Emerging Player of the Season. Apart from his exploits in T20s, Sudharsan caught the attention of spectators with his breathtaking performances in last season's Ranji Trophy. During his three robust appearances for Tamil Nadu, he handsomely struck 304 runs at 76.00 with a century and a fifty each. After his string of consistent runs across formats, Sudharsan was named in India's squad for the five high-stakes Tests in England. As Sudharsan continued to soar to new heights, Uthappa saw another all-format player in him. 'Now, he's the Orange Cap holder. That's mighty impressive. I genuinely believe he's one of India's future three-format players, alongside the likes of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal, all young guns in their own right. Then you've got players like Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh, and so many others stepping up. This is a boiling pot of talent, and I don't think it's slowing down anytime soon,' he added. (ANI)

"No Matter Who You Are...": Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma Given ODI Reality Check After Test Retirement By India Great

Legendary spinner Anil Kumble on Monday said captaining the Indian cricket team is different from leading in franchise cricket but Shubman Gill is "capable" of "figuring it out" as he gears up to take charge of the Test side. The 25-year-old Gill will be at the helm as India begin their transition phase following the retirements of "three pillars" in Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin with the five-match tour of England starting next month. "There are all capable, you have seen that with the kind of cricket that they play and the brand of cricket that they play," Kumble said during a chat featuring Steve Waugh, Matthew Hayden and Robin Uthappa at an Australian Summer of Cricket 2025-26 event here. He was asked if he has any advice for the young Indian Test side. "Captaincy for India is slightly different to captaining a franchise or any state side; it comes with its own responsibilities and the pressure. But I'm sure Shubman will figure it out and I think he is capable," the former India captain added. Kumble said while it will be difficult to adjust to the fact that Kohli, Rohit and Ashwin are not in the Test team, it will give Gill an opportunity to create his own legacy. "Transition is bound to happen and with three pillars of Indian cricket, for a long period of time, not being available. It's got to be different for us too, as fans too, when the Indian cricket team takes the ground in the first Test, not to see three names there," he said. "(It) is going to be different so that's something that I'm sure the dressing room will get used to over a period of time." "But it's the start of a young team and it's a new cycle of WTC, which I'm sure this current team would look to win and then get into that final and hopefully hold the trophy one day, so that's something that I'm sure Shubman will try and create that kind of a legacy," he added. Kumble said while it will not be easy for Kohli and Rohit, who will continue playing ODI cricket, to maintain their fitness levels, the two stalwarts must be celebrated for the remainder of their careers. India are set to play three ODIs and five T20Is in Australia in October this year. "It's not easy to just do what they need to in terms of preparing for an ODI, which is six months down the line. It's going to be a challenge, no matter who you are and how well you have had your career over the years," Kumble said. "But they are champion players, so they know how to sort of manoeuvre that, and it's important to celebrate champion players as long as they play. You go into thread bare of each performance as to how they should have played or how they could have played. What is important is to celebrate whatever is out there with the two players. Ideally, they would like to play until the 2027 World Cup, because that's something that did not happen. We saw that 2023 (World Cup) final with Australia holding the trophy," he said. Kumble said while Kohli and Rohit will want to make a mark in Australia, he backed Sai Sudharsan to earn a place in the limited-overs side on the back of strong performance in England. "The legends who are no longer playing in the other format will certainly want to make a mark, Virat and Rohit, and I'm sure a lot of people would want to watch that in Australia," he said. "I feel someone like Yashasvi Jaiswal … Sai Sudharsan, I think, will make it to that team although he's not a part of it. (But) I think he will, based on the performances is going to have in England and he'll be someone to watch out for." Kumble continued, "Of course, in the T20 format, Suryakumar is someone who I'm sure all of us would want to watch. I have a feeling that one of the (top) performers from this IPL will be a part of that too. "I don't know who it is, but I'm sure one of the uncapped players, there have been wonderful performances and India will certainly not overlook those. The selectors will want to sort of capitalise on one of those players to be a part of Australia," he added.

'Unthinkable': Steve Waugh hails Vaibhav Suryavanshi, warns against Sachin comparison

Vaibhav Suryavanshi (Image credit: BCCI) Mumbai: Former Australia captain Steve Waugh isn't usually glued to the TV during the IPL , especially since matches air late at night in Australia. But the emergence of 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi was enough to make even the legendary Aussie batter sit up and take notice. 'I don't get to watch a lot of IPL games because it's probably the wrong time of the day for us. But when someone like that comes along, you want to watch the game — he's a fantastic attraction for the sport,' the 59-year-old said. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Suryavanshi made headlines with a blistering 35-ball century (he eventually scored 101 off 38 balls) against Gujarat Titans, the fastest IPL hundred by an Indian. 'I watched that century and I just couldn't believe how well he struck the ball, how effortlessly he was hitting sixes, and how relaxed he looked. At 14, he had no concept of pressure… just played with complete freedom. It was great to watch. I guess the challenge for him now will be to keep it all under control,' Waugh said during a media interaction alongside Anil Kumble, Matthew Hayden, and Robin Uthappa at the launch of the 'Australian Summer of Cricket 2025-26,' organised by Cricket Australia and the Australian Government. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo A Father's Pride: How RR, Dravid & Vikram Shaped Vaibhav Suryavanshi In what was a sensational debut season for Suryavanshi with Rajasthan Royals , the aggressive left-handed opener racked up 252 runs in seven matches at a phenomenal strike rate of 206.56. 'Can he continue to play with the same enthusiasm and freedom? That'll be his challenge. He's got the skills, he's mentally tough, and he's got a great backstory — you want someone like that to succeed. It's a great story for cricket, even for someone like me watching from far away,' Waugh added, referring to the well-documented sacrifices made by Suryavanshi's parents. However, Waugh cautioned against comparing the young phenom to Sachin Tendulkar , who debuted in Tests at age 16 in 1989. Everything is special about Vaibhav Suryavanshi: Vikram Rathour 'I don't think you can compare anyone to Sachin Tendulkar. I mean, a 16-year-old (actually 18) coming to Australia and scoring a century in Perth, on the hardest, most unique pitch in world cricket where most players struggle, was a freakish performance. It's very rare that someone like Sachin comes along. But then again, I never expected a 14-year-old to score a century in the IPL. That was unthinkable,' Waugh said. One of the most successful Test captains in history, Waugh also commented on how Indian teams no longer seem 'intimidated' when touring Australia. 'They're well-travelled, experienced, and used to different conditions. The intimidation factor isn't what it was 10 or 20 years ago. India have won two Test series recently in Australia, and frankly, they often have more crowd support than Australia,' Waugh observed.
