Austrian Grand Prix 2025: George Russell tops FP1, McLaren duo Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri dominate FP2

Image credit: Formula 1 The Austrian Grand Prix kicked off at the Red Bull Ring, and last year's winner George Russell picked up right where he left off by topping the first free practice session, FP1. However, the McLaren duo soon made their presence felt, proving they are the dominant force this season. Lando Norris topped FP2, with Oscar Piastri following closely in second place. One driver who deserves a special mention is rookie Alex Dunne. Replacing Norris in FP1, he impressed with a fourth-place finish in what was his debut F1 outing. Austrian Grand Prix FP1 and FP2 results Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who holds the record for the most wins (four) at the Red Bull Ring — his team's home track — didn't top either of the practice sessions but ensured he stayed within the top three in both. Similarly, Oscar Piastri remained consistent with top-three finishes in both FP1 and FP2. George Russell's Mercedes teammate, Kimi Antonelli, now has one less distraction after completing high school, allowing him to fully focus on racing. However, he finished 11th in both sessions. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton also failed to impress on Friday, taking 9th in FP1 and 10th in FP2. The Williams duo, Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz, took seventh and eighth, respectively. Racing Bulls' Isack Hadjar rounded out the top ten behind Hamilton. In FP2, Aston Martin's Lance Stroll delivered a strong performance, finishing fourth. He was followed by Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who had skipped FP1 to give F2 driver Dino Beganovic a chance behind the wheel of an F1 car. Beganovic, however, finished 18th in FP1. Russell came sixth in FP2, followed by Red Bull's Yuki Tsunoda in seventh, Bortoleto in eighth, and Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso in ninth — just ahead of Hamilton.
