'Outstanding' new electric SUV achieves record-breaking safety score: 'We've raised the bar for ourselves'

Electric car manufacturer Lynk & Co. International recently shattered records with the highest-ever Euro NCAP safety score for a compact SUV, CleanTechnica reported. The European New Car Assessment Programme is an independent nonprofit organization that tests and rates automobiles on a five-star safety system. And Lynk & Co.'s 02, a fully electric compact SUV with a 200-kilowatt engine, clinched the spot as the safest vehicle in its class in 2025. "With outstanding results across all assessment categories — including the highest-ever recorded rating of 89% for Safety Assistance — the 02 is setting a new safety benchmark in its segment," CleanTechnica stated. The vehicle also achieved "outstanding" scores in Adult Occupant Protection, Child Occupant Protection, and Vulnerable Road User Protection. "Safety has always been a core pillar of our product strategy, and with the Lynk & Co. 02, we've raised the bar for ourselves — and for the entire segment," vice president of product and strategy David Green said in a news release. "This recognition reinforces our commitment to building vehicles that are not only innovative and sustainable but also among the safest on the road." Another often overlooked aspect of vehicular safety is air pollution, both inside and outside of the car — but it's one category wherein all electric vehicle models excel. That's because these vehicles don't burn oil for fuel, so they don't release the polluting gases that have been linked with severe health impacts and global heating. To put it in perspective, one MIT study found that diesel-burning cars emit nearly twice as much pollution per mile over their lifetimes than EVs — a difference of 350 grams of carbon dioxide per mile to 200. In addition to improved health and safety, many drivers are choosing to upgrade to EVs for the ease of ownership and lower costs. Since EVs don't have engines, they need far less expensive maintenance over their lifetimes. And obviously, they have no associated gasoline costs. Making the switch is a particularly savvy move for those with home solar panels, as charging a car with solar power brings both car and energy costs down to near zero. If you're interested in getting a quote from a vetted local installer, the free tools at EnergySage are a great place to start — using them helps the average person save up to $10,000 on a solar installation. Would you be more likely to get an EV if it came with a free home charger? Ford recalls Bronco, Mustang Mach-E models for door lock issues

The Ford logo is seen above the entrance to the Ford Motor Company Kentucky Truck Plant, Wednesday, April 30, 2025, in Louisville, Ky. (AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster, file) Ford has announced a pair of recalls for certain Bronco and Mustang Mach-E vehicles due to issues affecting the door locks, together impacting more than 35,000 vehicles. As of Thursday, the recalls target opposite problems affecting the door latches. In the case of the Mustang models, doors may remain locked when they aren't normally expected to, and for the Bronco SUVs, child-safety locks may fail to prevent some doors from opening. Here's what you need to know: Ford Mustang Mach-E recall The larger of the two recalls affects over 32,000 Ford Mustang Mach-E SUVs, including those from model years 2021 through 2025. According to a Transport Canada notice, the issue may originate from the software managing the power-control and secondary on-board diagnostic control modules. 'Under certain conditions, the electronic door latches could stay locked after the driver and/or front passenger exit the vehicle,' the notice reads. 'As a result, you may not be able to open the doors from the outside, or an occupant that's unable to use the inside door handle(s) may not be able to exit the vehicle on their own.' Transport Canada warns that in an emergency, the issue may delay first responders and slow some drivers or passengers trying to exit the vehicle. 'Both issues could increase the risk of injury,' the notice reads. Ford Bronco recall Also recalled are 2025 models of Ford Bronco SUVs, with nearly 4,000 units affected. The recall's Transport Canada notice reads that on some four-door models of the SUVs, the 'left-rear door may be opened from the inside when the child safety lock is in the 'ON' position.' A failure of the child-lock system could 'increase the risk of injury,' it says. If your vehicle is affected Transport Canada is advising owners of affected models that Ford will contact them by mail and direct them to bring their vehicle to a dealership, where the software for Mustang Mach-E models will be updated, and Bronco SUVs will be inspected for door-latch issues. Parts may be replaced if necessary, the Bronco notice reads. For more information, owners can contact Ford by phone at 1-800-565-3673, or look up their vehicle on the manufacturer's recalls page.

Ford recalls more than 197,000 Mustang Mach-E cars due to door latches that can trap passengers

How states are navigating roadblocks around EV infrastructure Ford Motor is recalling more than 197,000 Mustang Mach-E vehicles over an issue with door latches that could trap passengers inside. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced last week that the automaker is recalling 197,432 of the all-electric vehicles, model years 2021-2025, due to an issue with door latches that puts children at risk. The Michigan-based company is also recalling 120,000 Mustang Mach-E vehicles in markets outside the U.S., according to a Ford spokesperson. If the car's battery level drops too low, the NHTSA explained, the door latches may remain locked once a passenger exits and shuts the door, potentially trapping children and others who are unable to unlock the doors using the inside door release. This could result in serious injury, the NHTSA said, particularly in the event of extreme heat. The Ford spokesperson told CBS News they are not aware of any injuries or accidents associated with the faulty door latches and said the company is issuing a software update to address the recall. Ford is expected to send letters notifying owners of the safety risk on June 23, the NHTSA said. Affected owners can contact: Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 (recall number 25S65) or The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 This action follows a recall from the automaker last month. On May 9, the NHTSA said Ford was recalling over 1 million Ford and Lincoln vehicles due to a software glitch with the rearview camera. contributed to this report.

Ford issues six recalls in one day for half a million cars

Ford is asking drivers to return to the dealership mechanic. Again. The Detroit automaker issued six recalls on Monday, according to a bulletin from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It's the latest in a yearslong stream of recalls for the car company. Overall, 534,755 vehicles — including some of America's best-selling models — are impacted by the recalls. The largest recall involves 304,662 Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator SUVs built between 2020 and 2025. The six and seven passenger SUVs may have a faulty part in the second row, possibly resulting in seats 'unlatching, folding, or sliding unexpectedly while driving.' Ford is also recalling 197,432 Mustang Mach-E models sold between 2021 and 2025 after investigators found a problem with the 12V battery. If the accessory battery runs low, it risks 'trapping someone who is unable to use the inside door release handles.' Another 276 Mach-Es risk rolling away after the driver puts the car in park. Another 27,768 four-door Bronco SUVs were recalled for a potentially faulty child safety lock. An additional 2,272 Broncos might have an issue with airbags deploying, and 2,345 F-Series trucks risk brake failure. Ford has issued 78 recalls so far this year , far more than any other automaker. The next five most-recalled brands — Chrysler, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, General Motors, and Honda — have just 67 recalls combined. This year's Ford recalls span a range of issues, including powertrain fixes, technical reboots , seatbelt realignments, and backup camera adjustments. In a 2024 earnings call, Ford CEO Jim Farley said the company spent $4.8 billion annually on recalls. The top boss unveiled a 'build and hold' model for several US-built models. After the products finished rolling through Ford assembly plants, the car company held trucks in giant parking lots, allowing engineers to assess their build quality. Farley said the new process helped the company avoid 12 safety and technical recalls. It also temporarily cut into profits . 'Our earnings may be a little lumpy,' he said during an April 2024 earnings call. 'What we're going to see long term is fewer recalls and lower warranty costs because of this new process.'
