Why Avatar: Seven Havens Is More Than Just A Franchise Spin-Off
Avatar: The Last Airbender first aired on Nickelodeon in 2005. Blending Western animation with influences from Japanese anime, no one could have predicted that a show with a 5:00 pm timeslot on Fridays would enjoy the longevity it has today, nearly 20 years after its original premiere. Now, with the recently announced Avatar: Seven Havens, Nickelodeon and Avatar Studios have teamed up again for a brand-new entry in the franchise. A Franchise's Resurgence During the height of 2020, Avatar: The Last Airbender, the first entry in the Avatar series, was added to Netflix for people around the world to stream. Fans of the show, many of whom hadn't seen it since they were children, sat down to reembark on the journey of Aang, the Avatar, and his friends as they battled to end a war that had devastated their world. In addition to veteran fans of the show, the streaming service introduced the story to an entirely new audience, and the show gained a level of popularity it hadn't experienced in years. Seemingly overnight, a franchise that had been steadily catering to its original fan base following the completion of Avatar's sequel series, Avatar: The Legend of Korra, through books focusing on characters that had briefly appeared on the show and comics that continued Aang and his friends' story, became the new obsession of thousands of new fans. Unsurprisingly, Avatar rose to No.1 on Netflix. Due to the growing popularity and increasing demand for more stories set in the Avatar universe, Nickelodeon launched Avatar Studios in 2021, led by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the creators of the series. Through strategy, Nickelodeon was able to capitalize on both nostalgia and the brand's resurgence in the cultural zeitgeist. In addition to the graphic novels and books that were steadily being published before the studio's inception, a new film and now a new series were announced to keep fans captivated, allowing Paramount to continue to expand the IP across multiple platforms. Each iteration of the Avatar series features, you guessed it, the Avatar, who varies in each installment because the main character reincarnates into the individual whose journey we follow during that story. Seven Havens, which centers on the new Avatar, a young girl named Pavi, is the first series in the Avatar franchise to be created by Avatar Studios. Even though there are two other series supporting it, with The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, Seven Havens will serve as a test to see if the franchise can sustain its momentum. Building with Intent While fans were divided over the sequel series to The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra, part of that division came from the franchise's original momentum slowing down because some fans couldn't connect with the new cast of characters, the mix of old and new audiences, and the constantly changing schedule for episode airings in the final season. Additionally, The Legend of Korra gained renewed attention when it was added to Netflix shortly after its parent series experienced increased success during the streaming era. With that in mind, Nickelodeon has the opportunity to reinforce Paramount+ as the only place to stream the episodes of Seven Havens once they air, since the Avatar series tends to have the most success when fans can watch the episodes in order and not at random like other episodes of non-storied serialized cartoon shows on Nickelodeon, such as SpongeBob SquarePants. What makes the Avatar series stand out from other franchises that have suffered from endless sequels and reboots, which tire out viewers, is that the Avatar franchise has a built-in system in its story that allows fans to expect more without it feeling like "too much.' Since each series is meant to introduce entirely new characters and expand the existing story and lore, fans don't need to watch characters and settings go through endless cycles. The series is designed to encourage viewers to return and see what happens next after the adventures of the previous cast, seen through the eyes of a new character. Not many franchises can do this without upsetting a significant part of their fan base, and that's part of what makes the Avatar franchise so unique. You go into each series expecting the cast you've grown familiar with to be in the background or absent from the story entirely. Avatar: Seven Havens, while a new chapter in the series, symbolizes new beginnings and an opportunity for Avatar Studios, Nickelodeon, and Paramount to show that the streaming success the franchise achieved in 2020 was more than just a milestone. It's a chance to prove to critics and fans alike that the same magic and storytelling they loved are proof that creators can produce content everyone can enjoy and connect with, if they are given the space to breathe and, who would've guessed it, create.

'Alien: Earth,' 'Gen V' and More -- Big Comic-Con 2025 Reveals So Far
San Diego Comic-Con 2025 is in full swing, and we've gotten sneak peeks at The Boys season 5, Predator: Badlands, Lego and Hot Wheels releases, plus there's more news coming for TV shows, movies and games. We're excited about Avatar: The Last Airbender, Tron: Ares, Gen V and Welcome to Derry, so we're riding along with fans as announcements and trailer drops come out. We'll be posting highlights here from the four-day affair to help you keep up with the hottest, weirdest and most interesting stuff that hits. Avatar: Seven Havens first look It's a 20-year anniversary celebration for Avatar: The Last Airbender, the award-winning animated series that aired on Nickelodeon. Thursday's Comic-Con panel brought together original creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino and voice cast Zach Tyler Eisen, Jennie Kwan, Michaela Jill Murphy, Jack DeSena (Sokka), Dante Basco (Zuko) and Dee Bradley Baker for a look at the past and present, including Avatar: Seven Havens. The new animated sequel series, which was originally announced in February, has 26 episodes and will be split into two installments. Fans will meet Avatar Pavi when the series debuts, but for now, here's a glimpse at the bender picking up the mantle. Nickelodeon Five Nights at Freddy's 2 The sequel from Blumhouse sees an unsuspecting group pull up to the creepy pizzeria, not knowing about the killer, life-like animatronics with nothing but evil in store. They clearly don't know about Freddy's history. Skeet Ulrich appeared in Hall H, announcing that he will be in the movie as "somebody with a very particular and specific past, and somebody who has a deep emotional tie to what's going on." For those paying attention, this is sort of a Scream reunion since Matthew Lillard is returning as villain William Afton. Aside from that, details for Ulrich's character are under wraps. The film hits theaters on Dec. 5. Percy Jackson and the Olympians, season 2 release date Pack up for Camp Half-Blood when the fantasy series returns, this time introducing Tantalus, Thalia and the goddess Athena to the story. The new season arrives on Disney Plus on Dec. 10, and fans will see Percy dealing with more than fantastical monsters: Grover goes missing and there's drama with friends and a new sibling. Twisted Metal season 2 sneak peek With a week left before the new episodes of Peacock's Grindhouse series returns, the show's main cast, which includes Anthony Mackie, Stephanie Beatriz, Anthony Carrigan and Joe Seanoa, along with showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith, hit the stage in Hall H to tease what's in store. Smith revealed two separate sneak peek clips for the new season. The first scene found Stu (played by Mike Mitchell) striving to be a better killer. With Sweet Tooth as his mentor, it looks like he has some lofty, murderous goals. Stu takes the crew out, but he missed all the major organs, which Sweet Tooth advised is a major no-no. You have to go for "the grapes, the apple, or the banana," the evil clown explains. The last victim to die recognizes Sweet Tooth, which brightens the killer's spirits, until he calls him "Big Baby." Yes, there's a notorious killer out there named "Big Baby" and it looks like Sweet Tooth is going to hunt him down now, too. Michael James Shaw stars as Axel in season 2 of Twisted Metal on Peacock. Peacock The next clip finds John Doe being vulnerable as he talks about living a life without any childhood memories. But, as he realizes, things could be much worse if he had all that knowledge. The big reveal in this clip comes towards the end as Axel (played by Michael James Shaw), the character who's attached to two giant wheels, comes barrelling through flames, all smiles. Get ready for a trip back into the wastes, Twisted Metal season 2 drops its first three episodes on July 31. Outlander, season 8 teaser Outlander's final season is due out early next year, ending the love-and-war saga for Jamie and Claire. How will their story -- and history -- play out? Starz shared a teaser for the last chapter, and Frank Randall's book has everyone on edge. Check out the clip, mark your calendar for this series' end and the beginning of the spinoff, Outlander: Blood of My Blood. Invincible VS trailer shows Battle Beast Gamers were treated to a trailer for the new Invincible VS, a bloody superhero game based on Robert Kirkman's animated Prime Video series. We've been following all the details for this upcoming release, but watch below to see Battle Beast bare his teeth in this latest character reveal. The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is ending soon AMC served up a new trailer for season 3 of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, but Hall H news revealed the show is renewed for a fourth and final season. Season 3 sees Norman Reedus's Daryl and Melissa McBride's Carol heading to Spain in the new installment as they try to find their way home. Though production for season 4 starts soon, there aren't any details about its plot. In the meantime, fans can tune in on Sept. 7 for the next round. Rick and Morty's President Curtis gets a spinoff Adult Swim announced that the popular President Curtis is getting his own animated series, with star Keith David reprising his role as the voice behind the titular character. "President Curtis has always been a blast to play," said David in a statement. "Getting to explore his world more deeply in this new series is a dream. I can't wait for fans to see what kind of chaos he stirs up when Rick isn't around to steal the spotlight." Adult Swim Alien: Earth brings the Xenomorph to TV Alien: Earth fans in attendance were treated to a world premiere screening of the pilot episode. After that, show creator Noah Hawley and executive producer David W. Zucker took the stage with cast members Timothy Olyphant, Sydney Chandler, Babou Ceesay, Samuel Blenkin and Alex Lawther to give further insight into what to expect from the sci-fi drama. The first immediate detail any fan of the franchise will notice is how familiar-feeling things will be in the first few moments of the series. Hawley revealed during the panel that the Maginot, the ship in the series, "was built to the exact specifications" of the Nostromo from the original 1979 movie. Sydney Chandler plays Wendy in FX's Alien: Earth on Hulu. Patrick Brown/FX Networks Sydney Chandler's Wendy is basically the show's Ripley. She's a different sort of synthetic human (the consciousness of a 12-year-old girl lives inside her). There's plenty of Xenomorph action, along with some other creepy specimens. Honestly, this may just be the sci-fi series of the year. It premieres on Aug. 12 on Hulu. Gen V season 2 trailer gets a boost from Starlight A panel for Boys spin-off Gen V teased a tense and gory sophomore year for Marie and fellow supes at Godolkin University. Gen V's second season is set after the fourth season of The Boys and debuts with three episodes on Sept. 17. During the panel, which featured series creator Eric Kripke, producer Michelle Fazekas and stars Jaz Sinclair, London Thor, Derek Lu, Maddie Phillips and newcomer Hamish Linklater, a brand new trailer for the upcoming season was shown. It looks like Starlight is coming to Godolkin, and she has a big job for Marie that will surely inform the new storyline and, potentially, the plot of the final season of The Boys. The Boys season 5 sneak peek Speaking of The Boys, Kripke dropped a little clip to whet the appetites of the fans in the room for the fifth and final season of the hit comic book series. In the sneak peek, Homelander (who now has political power) addresses a crowd. "This is a safer, more god-fearing nation," he says. Yet fear is the only thing on the faces of those he's speaking to. Other characters who pop up are a furious Billy Butcher, Soldier Boy in a cryo-tank and a first-ever glimpse of Supernatural star Jared Padalecki. Having Jared and Jenson Ackles back on screen together is enough to get me to tune in. Predator: Badlands sneak peek Director Dan Trachtenberg and stars Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi and Elle Fanning hit the Hall H stage to promote Predator: Badlands. Is this the Predator/Alien crossover movie we've been yearning for? It doesn't seem so. Trachtenberg revealed that Badlands will focus on the relationship between Elle Fanning's Weyland-Yutani android (a detail which connects both franchises) and the Predator. 20th Century Studios Everything is apparently out to kill the Predator here. "He's essentially the Dutch of this movie," Trachtenberg revealed, referencing Arnold Schwarzenegger's character in the classic film. Fun tidbit: The scene of the droid and Predator being strapped together in Badlands was inspired by Chewbacca and C-3PO from Star Wars. As for a sneak peek, the first 15 minutes of the movie were shown. In it, the Predator had to fight another Predator -- his brother, it turns out -- in a cave. Our main Predator loses the battle, which prompts his Predator father to send him out into the wild to prove himself. He must head to the planet Genna and hunt "the unkillable Kalisk," a creator that even sparks fear in his own dad.

Get Ready for More Avatar: The Last Airbender
I've been ranking and rating things for years. A few years back, when I painstakingly ranked every TV show I've ever loved, the number two show on my list was Nickelodeon's animated Avatar: The Last Airbender . To this day, when I want to reference a show that has characters with well-written multi-season arcs, this is the show. It's no wonder that this nearly 20-year-old cartoon maintains such a devoted fan base. Last year, Netflix's long-awaited live action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender came out, and my family devoured it. While I'll agree that no remake will ever stand up to the greatness of the animated original, the live action Avatar: The Last Airbender was pure fan service in the best way possible. I've recently learned that the show has been renewed for seasons two and three, and that the second season has already wrapped filming. I immediately went back and re-watched the available season, cementing my views on a number of things about the show, not least the casting. Casting Hands-down my favorite character in the live action adaptation is Ian Ousley's Sokka. He replicates the animated Sokka's cartoonish vibe wonderfully. Of course, Sokka was also my favorite character in the animated series. Full disclosure: my cat is named Sokka. Gordon Cormier was also excellent as the live action Aang. His voice and his facial expressions do a better job than I'd thought possible of bringing the title character to life. Both Aang's childish playfulness and his precocious solemnity come through in Cormier's acting. Nobody else will ever be a replacement for the great Mako, who voiced Iroh in the original series. But Paul Sun-Hyung Lee does as good a job as is possible. I was lukewarm on the portrayals of Katara and Bumi, and both Azula and Gran Gran just did not work at all for me. But Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai works in a way I'd not have expected. Lastly, they cast Matthew Yang King as the voices of Appa and Momo, which excited me, as I was a big fan of his on the GeeksOn podcast twenty years ago. Effects The most important effects work in the show was always going to be the bending. And in that, the show has succeeded. The water whips, flame sprays, and stone walls all look excellent and realistic. Even Aang's gliding and spiral levitation look good. Likewise the show's creatures such as Koh the Face Stealer and June's shirshu Nyla look great. The only complaint I can muster about the special effects is that occasionally when the kids jump high into the air, flipping and whirling, it looks wildly unrealistic. Fan Service Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender are wildly devoted and can be somewhat fanatical about adherence to canon. That's why I was so pleased to see characters like Koh the Face Stealer, The Mechanist and his paralyzed son, June the bounty Hunter and her shirshu mount, and Jet the straw-chewing freedom fighter make an appearance. The Blue Spirit plot, although truncated and slightly altered, was adapted beautifully from the original. And when Azula eventually pulled out the lightning in a somewhat spectacular display, I no longer cared that the actress didn't look or sound like her animated counterpart. The song Leaves From The Vine , along with Mako's rendition and voice acting of Iroh, has brought many an Avatar fan to tears. Its subtle incorporation into a few select scenes of this adaptation likely went completely unnoticed by many viewers, but those of us who know Lu Ten's story caught the reference. And although it was altered, even the name Bonzu Pippinpaddleopsicopolis the Third showed up. That one got a huge cheer in my house. But not as large a cheer as when the cabbage merchant showed up in Omashu. Even before he said the words, my family was screaming 'My cabbages!' But easily my favorite bit of fan service came in episode 4 during the Cave of Two Lovers interlude when the minstrels made an appearance, looking exactly the way they had in the cartoon. It's probably my favorite episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender , and those actors absolutely nailed the role, from the floppy dancing to the stoner vibe of the singer. I only wish he'd had more hilariously idiotic one-liners to drive Sokka crazy. All I can say at this point is that if Melon Lord doesn't make an appearance in upcoming seasons, I might lose my mind.
