Tom Holland's Spider-Man set to start over in ‘Brand New Day' with The Punisher in tow
Marvel Studios is taking Tom Holland's Spider-Man in a sharply different direction. In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the focus shifts from multiversal chaos and Avengers-scale disasters to a grounded New York story.
Marvel boss Kevin Feige, speaking at a roundtable during promotions for Fantastic Four: First Steps, said,

'I think there's a promise at the end of No Way Home, that for as sad as it is that Peter is forgotten by everyone in his life, we are seeing for the first time in the
Tom Holland Spider-Man
stories him being a proper Spider-Man. Him being by himself, dedicated to saving the city, and dealing with – for lack of better terms – street-level crime, as opposed to world-ending events.'

It's a shift back to basics. No more swinging through alternate realities or relying on Tony Stark's tech. This is Peter, alone and anonymous, facing the kind of threats he was first built for.
The Punisher returns
Feige also confirmed that Jon Bernthal is returning as Frank Castle, also known as the Punisher. His inclusion brings a rougher edge to the story.
Live Events
'So when you do that, you say, okay, who are the other street-level characters that we've never seen him interact with? And of course, I love that The Punisher started in a Spider-Man comic. That great cover … I don't want to say too much, but Destin – I will say too much – Destin is doing an amazing job right now on that movie, which starts shooting very soon. And he's got eight or nine comic covers up on his wall in his art department that he is bringing to life in this movie, which is super cool.'
This is more than a crossover. It's a deliberate attempt to tap into the roots of both characters, and the darker moral grey zones they navigate when their paths cross.
'Brand New Day' inspired by the Comics
The film's title, Brand New Day, references a 2008 comic book arc where Peter Parker strikes a deal with Mephisto to undo his marriage and identity, essentially rebooting his life.
While Mephisto has already appeared in Ironheart, it's unclear if he'll appear in this version of the story. Feige has kept plot details tightly guarded, but the nod to classic comic covers and Bernthal's return suggests this will be one of the more faithful adaptations in recent memory.
Cast, characters and fresh faces
Alongside Tom Holland, Zendaya returns as MJ and Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds. Also joining the film are Stranger Things star Sadie Sink and The Bear's Liza Colón-Zayas. Their roles remain under wraps for now.
Meanwhile, there's buzz around Mark Ruffalo's Hulk being lined up as the film's primary antagonist. Nothing confirmed yet, but it's a detail fans will be watching closely.
Future crossovers already on the table
Feige hinted at his long-term hopes for the Spider-Man character within the
Marvel Cinematic Universe
, particularly with the incoming Fantastic Four.
'We didn't do chemistry reads, but whenever we cast, it is with that blue sky dream in mind of one day being able to do that. And that's a great example. That's one of the key relationships in Marvel comics is between Johnny Storm and Peter Parker. And we've never been able to come close to it before, and now it is in the realm of possibility. That's exciting. That gets me up in the morning.'
That crossover between Peter and Johnny Storm (to be played by Joseph Quinn) has been long awaited. If it happens, it could mark a new chapter for both characters.
What Tom Holland said about returning
After years away from the solo Spider-Man films, Tom Holland has said returning for Brand New Day feels familiar in the best way.
Speaking to Flip Your Wig, Holland said, 'It's gonna feel like making [Spider-Man: Homecoming] again. It's been such a long time that I've done it that it's gonna feel like a breath of fresh air. And I think the fans are gonna be over the moon with what we're putting together.'
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled for release on 31 July 2026. It will be directed by
Destin Daniel Cretton
, best known for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
Production begins soon. And while much of the plot remains under wraps, what's clear is this: Spider-Man is heading back to the streets. Back to the shadows. And perhaps, back to where he belongs.
