Ice hockey-Thompson ends long U.S. wait for world championship gold

Hockey history is clouded by the awarding of world champion status to the winners of the Olympic competition for many years, but the U.S.'s only stand-alone victory had come in 1933 before Tage Thompson's sudden-death winner on Sunday ended their long wait for the trophy. "It feels awesome. I mean, it's been so long for the U.S. It feels great putting this jersey back on, it's been a long time for me, and to be able to come out with a gold medal, it's pretty fantastic," an elated Michael McCarron told Reuters. "And in overtime fashion, there's no better way to win a game," the forward added. Given that the Americans have not won Olympic gold since 1980, not one of the current team was even born the last time their nation stood on the top step of the podium, and Sunday's winning squad was overcome with joy and relief as they celebrated their win. "I mean, we had some jam (good play), they had some jam. There were some lulls in the game for us, and sometimes that we were able to take it over, and both goalies played really spectacular," McCarron explained. "And three on three, anything can happen. It's a little worrisome - going into three on three, you never know what can happen. Luckily, we have some great shooters on our team, and Tage was able to get it in there for us." Fellow forward Drew O'Connor was on the bench with McCarron when the game was decided. "Honestly, I feel like sometimes it's tougher when you're watching and you're not on the ice. When you get up and go out there, it's a little easier, you're just kind of playing. But, yeah, there's a lot of nerves," he told Reuters. Many of the American players didn't even see the winning puck hit the net. "I don't know when it did! I just heard the buzzer, and I just jumped out and I thought, hopefully it went in, so I'm glad it did," a beaming McCarron said with his historic gold medal hanging around his neck. Ehlers, Danes fall in Bronze Medal Game, Niederreiter, Swiss to Play for Gold

Sunday, May 25 is the final day of the 2025 IIHF World Championship, with the bronze medal and gold medal games taking place from Avicii Arena in Sweden. The host, Sweden, took care of business against Nikolaj Ehlers and Denmark early in the morning hours. The Winnipeg Jets' star pending unrestricted free agent scored once but the Danes' two goals was not enough for Sweden's strong start. Mikael Backlund and Marcus Johanson each scored twice for the Swedes, which also got goals from Lucas Raymond and Mika Zibanejad in the affair. Nino Niederreiter (two gaols) and the Swiss took down Ehlers' Danes on Saturday 7-0 to propel themselves to the final against the United States, which is looking to snap its lengthy curse of 92 years without a gold medal win at the tournament. The gold medal game will take place at 1:00 PM central on Sunday afternoon.

Flyers' Sam Ersson's World Championship Run Ends in Semifinals

(Header/feature image courtesy of The Hockey News' Megan DeRuchie) Sweden's quest for gold came to a crashing halt in the semifinals of the IIHF World Championship on Saturday, falling 6–2 to a red-hot United States team. Sista målet i tomt mål. 🇸🇪🏒 — Tre Kronor (@Trekronorse) May 24, 2025 Sam Ersson, the lone Philadelphia Flyers player left in the tournament, didn't start the game but was called in to relieve starter Jacob Markström after Sweden fell behind. Though the loss ends Sweden's run in disappointing fashion, Ersson's individual performance throughout the tournament was a bright spot. The 25-year-old goaltender showed poise, composure, and a bounce-back mentality—qualities that had come under scrutiny during a challenging 2024–25 Flyers season in which he dealt with injuries and less-than-ideal individual stats. In this tournament, Ersson reminded everyone why the Flyers believe in him. His calm presence in the crease and ability to make timely saves helped Sweden reach the final four, and he consistently gave his team a chance to win in earlier matchups. For fans quick to catastrophize his NHL struggles, Ersson's strong showing on the international stage was a needed reminder: this is still a young goalie finding his footing in the world's toughest league. And performances like this one suggest he's headed in the right direction. While Sweden will now have to regroup and aim for bronze, Ersson leaves the tournament with his confidence rebuilt and his potential reaffirmed—a silver lining for both his national team and the Flyers heading into next season.

Billie Eilish Adds New Tour Dates — & Fans Are Already Losing It Over Her ‘Hit Me Hard and Soft' Era

(Photo by Samir Hussein/WireImage for Live Nation) Just when fans thought tickets were all sold out, Billie Eilish has hit again — this time with a fresh wave of 2025 tour dates that are sending the internet into a frenzy. On May 17, the Grammy and Oscar-winning artist officially announced a second North American leg of her Hit Me Hard and Soft world tour, expanding what's already one of the most anticipated live music events of the decade. The announcement comes as excitement around Eilish's third studio album, also titled Hit Me Hard and Soft , reaches a fever pitch. After kicking off with shows across Europe, Australia, and select U.S. cities, Billie will now return stateside for a fall 2025 run — adding multiple dates in major markets like Miami, New Orleans, Philadelphia, and San Francisco. The new dates mark a continuation of the global tour that fans have been scrambling to attend since it was first announced earlier this year. Pre-sale tickets for the upcoming U.S. and Tokyo shows will be available to American Express® Card Members starting today, May 20, at 12:00 PM local time for U.S. shows, and May 22 at 12:00 PM JST for Tokyo shows. With standout tracks like 'Lunch,' 'Chihiro,' and 'Birds of a Feather,' the album balances vulnerability and experimentation — delivered with the moody elegance that's become her signature. While the Hit Me Hard and Soft album visuals hinted at a softer, dreamier evolution, Billie's tour wardrobe proves she's still loyal to the look that made her an icon. On stage, she's embracing her signature oversized streetwear — baggy tees, athletic shorts, sneakers, and layered accessories. It's a continuation of her personal comfort-first aesthetic, now sharpened with maturity and intentional restraint. Given her past collaborations with designers like Rick Owens and Gucci, it's safe to say we can continue to expect looks that make just as big a statement as the music. (Photo by Kevin Mazur/for Live Nation) Billie, now 23, has always defied expectations. But this era feels more intentional, more cinematic, and more personal. Co-produced with her brother and longtime collaborator Finneas, the album was designed to be listened to in full — no singles, no skips, just immersive storytelling. Thematically, the album explores identity, longing, loneliness, and desire with poetic depth. It's moody but not melancholic, edgy but not chaotic. And fans are responding in kind, seeing their own emotional evolution mirrored in hers. Billie Eilish's Debut Reaches A Major Milestone, Marking A First For Her

Billie Eilish's When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? has now spent 250 weeks on the U.K.'s ... More Official Albums chart, a first for the singer. STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN - APRIL 23: Billie Eilish performs at Avicii Arena on April 23, 2025 in Stockholm, Sweden. (Photo by Samir Hussein/WireImage for Live Nation) By the time When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? rolled around, Billie Eilish was already a star in the music world. That album, her first full-length, turned her into a global powerhouse and a true hitmaker. The project has barely waned in popularity in the years since its release, and people are still consuming the set, which produced hits like "You Should See Me in a Crown,' "Bury a Friend,' and of course, the worldwide sensation "Bad Guy." Eilish remains a force to be reckoned with on the charts in the United Kingdom, and this week is a notable one as her entire catalog climbs and her debut project reaches a major milestone. As of this frame, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? has spent 250 weeks on the Official Albums chart. That tally ranks the most consumed projects in the U.K., blending both pure purchases and streaming activity. This set marks the first for Eilish to make it to that notable landmark number. When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? has spent four more weeks on the Official Albums chart than both Happier Than Ever and Hit Me Hard and Soft – her other two full-lengths – combined. It lived at No. 1 for three frames, while both titles that followed only managed one stay on the throne. When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? has spent even more time on the Official Albums Streaming chart than the main all-consumption list. The introductory title has now reached 260 weeks — or five full years — on the list of the most played releases on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and others. Though When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? still appears on both the Official Albums Sales and Official Physical Albums rankings this frame, it has yet to crack 200 weeks on either of those rankings. Both of Eilish's other full-lengths are also present on the Official Albums chart this time around. Happier Than Ever is up to 138 stays. Hit Me Hard and Soft, her most recent full-length, only needs one more turn on the tally before it reaches its first full year. The set will almost certainly make it to that number next time around, as it's still living inside the top 10. Amazingly, Eilish's first EP Don't Smile at Me is just shy of that 250-week milestone. The several-song-long effort has racked up 246 stays somewhere on the 100-spot roster. It will likely become her next project to hit that landmark number sometime soon, although it does not take up space on the tally at the moment.
