Awami League calls for mass resistance after 4 B'desh deaths
1 2 3 Kolkata: A day after violence in Bangladesh's Gopalganj killed at least four people and left nearly a dozen Awami League supporters injured, "leaders in exile" of the now-restricted former governing party called for "mass resistance" across the country. Former PM Sheikh Hasina, in an audio message on Wednesday, called for resistance with whatever people could lay their hands on, reminding party workers and people of the historical Ramana Race Course speech of her father and the country's founder, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, in which he asked people to fight the enemy with whatever they had. Incidentally, Gopalganj is Rahman's birthplace. You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata "There is no time to sit at home now. People have to take to the streets with whatever they have. The country needs to be saved," Hasina said. After her audio address, Awami workers chalked out an agitation programme, sources said. "There will be mass resistance by people, and our leader has called for a long march to Yamuna. People and Awami League workers from every district will take to the streets and walk towards Dhaka. Sheikh Hasina has asked people to remain prepared to be part of the mass resistance programme," said Obaidul Quader, former road transport and bridges minister of Bangladesh. Speaking to TOI over the phone, Quader criticised "the unprovoked attack on our workers and people in Gopalganj". "This is the first time in the history of Bangladesh that the army opened fire on innocent civilians. The attack on people will tarnish the image of the army it built over the decades. Bangladesh is a significant contributor to United Nations peacekeeping operations, and this attack will not go down well with the international community," Quader said. Violence erupted on Wednesday at a rally of National Citizen Party (NCP) in Gopalganj, an Awami stronghold. While reports claimed that four people died, Awami netas said seven people were killed. "Army chief (Waker-Uz-Zaman) said that the army never shoots at civilians. But there was no instigation on Wednesday. It was a spontaneous resistance," said Salim Mahmood, former MP of Chandpur I, and secretary (information) of Awami League. "NCP is yet to be registered. Despite that, the army is busy providing it protection. Bangladesh's interim chief, Muhammad Yunus, will have to take responsibility if those accused are not punished," Mahmood said.

Bangladesh: 4 dead after Hasina supporters clash with police – DW – 07/17/2025
Violence broke out after members of a newly formed student-led party arrived in Gopalganj to commemorate last year's uprising that led to Hasina's removal. At least four people were killed and dozens injured in Bangladesh as security forces clashed with supporters of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday, authorities said. The incident occurred in Gopalganj district, about 100 kilometers south-west of the capital Dhaka and the stronghold of Hasina's banned Awami League party. Violence broke out after members of the newly formed student-led political party, National Citizen Party, arrived in a convoy to commemorate last year's uprising that led to Hasina's removal. TV footage showed pro-Hasina activists attacking police with sticks and setting vehicles ablaze. Since Hasina's ouster 11 months ago, Bangladesh has faced ongoing unrest. Hasina's Awami League blamed the interim government for the violence. "We urge the world to take note of this blatant use of security apparatus," an Awami statement on X said. The government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, condemned the "utterly indefensible" violence and promised action. "Preventing young citizens from peacefully holding a rally to commemorate the one-year anniversary of their revolutionary movement is a shameful violation of their fundamental rights," he said, blaming Hasina's political party the Awami League and its student group for Wednesday's violence. Last year, Yunus took the helm of the country, vowing to restore stability, three days after Hasina was ousted and fled to India. However, critics say growing political polarization under him threatens prospects for a peaceful transition, despite promises of elections next April.
