Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) held a protest here on Saturday, demanding the immediate release of its chief and Member of Parliament Sheikh Abdul Rashid, from jail. (HT File) The protest began near Sangarmal Complex with plans to march towards Press Colony, Lal Chowk, but police intercepted and foiled the march before it could proceed. AIP chief spokesperson Inam Un Nabi, claimed that despite being caged for six long years, Er Rashid continues to 'rule the hearts' of the people of Jammu & Kashmir, a testament to his honesty, courage and unwavering stand for truth. He also attacked the National Conference (NC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leadership, accusing them of 'shameless silence' over the plight of hundreds of Kashmiris in jails. 'Here in Kashmir, they shed crocodile tears and fight for petty political survival, but in Delhi, Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti are busy enjoying lavish dinners with the Congress leadership without uttering a single word on the plight of Kashmiris languishing in jails including their fellow colleague MP Er Rashid, the same Congress that has betrayed and deceived the people of Kashmir time and again,' AIP chief spokesman said. AIP MLA Sheikh Khursheed said that the protest was an 'appeal to the authorities' to release Er Rashid and others incarcerated in and outside Jammu & Kashmir.

Awami Ittehad Party says its jailed J&K MP Er Rashid will attend parliament tomorrow

SRINAGAR: Jailed MP from Jammu and Kashmir and Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) president Er Rashid would attend the parliament session tomorrow to participate in the debate on 'Operation Sindoor'. His party has decided to bear one-day travel expenses of the jailed MP to attend the parliament. Er Rashid, who was arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) case in 2019 and is lodged in Delhi's Tihar jail, has been allowed by a special NIA court to attend the ongoing monsoon session of the parliament in custody for 12 days from July 24 to August 4. The court said he is subject to bearing the travel cost, returning to jail in the evening, and not having access to cell phones to speak to the press. Er Rashid, who won the Baramulla Lok Sabha seat last year by defeating two political heavy weights --- Omar Abdullah of National Conference and Sajjad Gani Lone of Peoples Conference --- has been asked by the court to pay Rs 1.45 lakh per day in travel expenses. AIP chief spokesperson Inam Un Nabi said Baramulla parliamentary constituency in north Kashmir, represented by Er Rashid, includes several areas along the Line of Control (LoC) that were most directly impacted by 'Operation Sindoor' and he (Er Rashid) would participate in the debate on 'Operation Sindoor'. 'The pain, suffering and ground realities of these people must be represented in Parliament. They need a voice and Er Rashid is that voice,' Inam said.

We will express our condolences to those 26 people who came here as tourists to spend the best moments of their lives... something unfortunate that has caused shockwaves among all the Indian people, and in opposition to this attack, we have united here... The session aims to convey the Union Government's message to combat terrorism to the legislative assembly of Jammu and Kashmir... Today, there will be no political discussion, including discussions that divide the country or those based on religious divides. The special session gives backup and strength to the Union government," Sharma said. When asked if any kind of resolution on the attack will be tabled during the session, the J&K LoP said, "We don't know what kind of resolution will be brought here today, but we have fully supported the resolution by the CM during the all-party meeting... If they bring such a kind of resolution here also, we would be very happy." "We also say that there should be talks (with Pakistan). The solution will come only through talks... unless you talk, people will keep dying... we have not only condemned the attack but we have also protested against it. Not only will it be condemned in the House, but we hope that a memorial should be built in memory of those killed, and we also said that a bravery award should be named after Adil. There should not be collective punishment; it is not the solution to any issue," Sheikh said. AAP MLA Mehraaj Malik also stated that India should not be fighting a water war with Pakistan, but give them a proper answer for the attack. "The whole world is condemning and mourning the attack. It is necessary to discuss the incident here in the assembly today. The country stands united today... First, we need to give an answer to Pakistan, then there will be scope for talks... We will not give them an answer through talks, we have to show them our strength... Indus water cannot be stored for more than 3-4 days without affecting our population. We do not need to fight this water war with them... Why do we have such a large army and such a substantial amount of ammunition? For what? We have to give them an answer once... If we don't give them an answer now, Pakistan will repeat such an incident after four months," Malik said. The attack is one of the deadliest attacks in the Valley since the 2019 Pulwama strike, in which 40 CRPF jawans were killed. Following the Pahalgam terror attack , India has taken strong measures against Pakistan for its support of cross-border terrorism.
