GALLERY: Historic buses return to Newton Aycliffe streets for special event

A County Durham town celebrated its transport past with a historic bus event. The Aycliffe and District Bus Preservation Society hosted 'an afternoon on towns' a specialevent that allowed Newton Aycliffe residents to photograph and ride historic buses that once travelled throughout the region. The event, held from 2pm to 6pm on Saturday (February 8), featured recreated routes formerly operated by United, including the fondly remembered 'Newtonian' service, through Newton Aycliffe and Heighington. Alex Willis, 27, a volunteer who joined the society last year, highlighted the significance of the event. He said: "This was our first event focused on providing photography opportunities with the buses. "It's all about raising our profile in the town, especially as we celebrate our 45th year. "Surprisingly, some people in Newton Aycliffe still don't know we exist, so this was a chance for them to see history in today's modern setting." The society, an accredited museum based in Newton Aycliffe, operates solely on donations and is continually seeking volunteers to support its mission of preserving regional bus heritage. Their collection includes buses dating back to 1963, offering a tangible link to the past for enthusiasts and the general public alike. Open days are held at the museum throughout the year and the buses often feature in vintage vehicle rallies.
