GALLERY: Historic buses return to Newton Aycliffe streets for special event
A County Durham town celebrated its transport past with a historic bus event.
The Aycliffe and District Bus Preservation Society hosted 'an afternoon on towns' a specialevent that allowed Newton Aycliffe residents to photograph and ride historic buses that once travelled throughout the region.
The event, held from 2pm to 6pm on Saturday (February 8), featured recreated routes formerly operated by United, including the fondly remembered 'Newtonian' service, through Newton Aycliffe and Heighington.
Alex Willis, 27, a volunteer who joined the society last year, highlighted the significance of the event.
He said: "This was our first event focused on providing photography opportunities with the buses.
"It's all about raising our profile in the town, especially as we celebrate our 45th year.
"Surprisingly, some people in Newton Aycliffe still don't know we exist, so this was a chance for them to see history in today's modern setting."
The society, an accredited museum based in Newton Aycliffe, operates solely on donations and is continually seeking volunteers to support its mission of preserving regional bus heritage.
Their collection includes buses dating back to 1963, offering a tangible link to the past for enthusiasts and the general public alike.

4-Year-Old Gets Restless on Delayed Flight, and the Pilot's Response Is Melting Hearts
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A delayed United Airlines flight turned from a frustrating wait into an unforgettable memory for one young passenger, thanks to a thoughtful flight crew. The original poster (OP), user Dadio3791, shared the story on Reddit, recounting how their four-year-old grandson had become restless during a maintenance delay on their flight to Atlanta. As the family waited aboard the plane, the child and the OP wandered the cabin, eventually stopping at the cockpit. Instead of turning them away, the pilot invited the boy to sit in the captain's seat, while the first officer gave him a trading card and a pair of wings. Yaroslav Astakhov/iStock/Getty Images Plus "I can't say how much this made his entire trip," the OP wrote, adding, "The entire flight crew of UA1962 was (currently are still) absolutely amazing. "Went from a hot broken aircraft to one of our grandson's core memories! Thank you to the entire flight crew!" Redditors flocked to the comments to applaud the flight crew's actions, with one United employee writing, "I've said it before and I'll say it again, we love having people of all ages coming to check out the flight deck if there's time! "Glad he loved it and I apologize in advance for the insane cost of flight training now thrust upon your children in the future." Another, who said they work for United on the ramp, noted, "Basically every flight, we've got little kids watching us load and unload the plane. I'll from time to time wave at them and watching them get happy makes my day as well as I'm sure theirs too." In a statement to Newsweek, United Airlines wrote, "At United, we know that travel is about more than just getting from place to place—it's about creating meaningful memories along the way. "Our crews are empowered to deliver exceptional service, and we're happy to hear the crew on Flight 1962 did just that by going the extra mile to make this young passenger feel welcome and excited to fly." United's Customer Care Small acts of kindness like these have become a point of pride for United Airlines. According to United's Customer Care page, passengers are encouraged to share positive experiences with staff directly, including compliments for crew interactions. The airline notes that it welcomes feedback "so we can improve how we serve our customers" and invites travelers to highlight acts that stood out during their trip. United Employees Making Headlines For the Right Reasons This isn't the first time United have received positive attention online. In another account published by Newsweek, a woman rushing to see her dying father recalled how a United flight attendant quietly comforted her mid-flight. "She didn't try to make it better. She just listened," the woman wrote. The attendant later brought her tissues, a drink, and a warm chocolate chip cookie. "It was the smallest thing. But in that moment, it felt like someone cared," she added. 'This is why I am loyal to UA' These stories have helped shine a light on the day-to-day compassion shown by airline workers, especially during unpredictable circumstances like mechanical delays. For one young boy, it turned a frustrating morning into a lifelong memory. "This is why I am loyal to UA," the OP declared. Newsweek has contacted Dadio3791 for comment via Reddit. United Airlines flight attendants are set for pay rises of up to 45%
United Airlines flight attendants are set for big pay increases under the terms of a tentative agreement. The United branch of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA reached a tentative deal with the airline on May 23. The first details of the deal were published on Tuesday. It states that cabin crew members would receive pay increases up to 45.6% over the contract's five-year timeframe. The immediate raise would be as much as 27.8%, meaning a rise in hourly pay for those in their first year from $28.88 to $36.92. By the end of the contract, the starting pay would be $42.06 an hour. The proposed increases for longer-serving flight attendants would be between 26% to almost 28%. It means pay for the longest-serving staff would jump from $67.11 an hour to $84.78. By the end of the contract, the hourly rate would be $96.58. Flight attendants are typically only paid for the time of the flight, but the tentative agreement also includes half-pay during boarding. Delta Air Lines was the first in the US to introduce this back in 2022. There is also a one-off payment for retroactive pay. The union said it was an "industry-leading" formula worth $595 million, which compensates for the lack of a cost-of-living raise for United flight attendants since 2020. Contract negotiations have dragged on while competitors have ratified their own agreements. On May 13, about a dozen flight attendants gatecrashed a press event unveiling United's new Polaris business class to highlight the lack of a deal. American Airlines flight attendants ratified a deal last September that gave them an immediate pay increase of up to 20.5%. Five months earlier, Southwest Airlines flight attendants won a 22.3% pay increase. Delta flight attendants, who aren't unionized, have received annual pay increases. The latest put the starting wage at $36.92 — the same as United's tentative contract. The United AFA is set to hold a road show, both virtually and at airports nationwide, before voting opens on July 7. Voting closes on July 29. If the contract is approved by union members, it will take effect the following day.

🏆 Tottenham end their drought, clinch Europa League glory over United
🏆 Tottenham end their drought, clinch Europa League glory over United This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. You can read the original version in 🇧🇷 here. The Uefa Europa League 2024/2025 title would salvage the season for one of them. And it was up to Tottenham to make history this Wednesday (21) at San Mamés, Bilbao's home, by beating Manchester United 1 x 0. Advertisement Ending their trophy drought that had been ongoing since 2007/2008, when they celebrated the English League Cup. That's SEVENTEEN YEARS without any trophy. Tottenham, who were the first winners of the then Uefa Cup in 1971/1972 - also won in 1983/1984. Adds to its trophy gallery the "updated" version of the tournament. And that carries more weight. And it secured them a spot in the Champions League 2025/2026 after the feat achieved in the Basque Country. Highlight for coach Ange Postecoglou who had "prophesied" at least one victory for Tottenham this season by stating that "Usually, in my second season, I win things". Advertisement Control and... lethal Tottenham 🔥 United were better at ball handling. Diallo showed his usual personality and Bruno Fernandes, playing more withdrawn, distributed the game well. But they lacked efficiency. Something that Tottenham had minutes before the interval. Sarr's cross found Brennan Johnson and Luke Shaw, with the attacker getting the better after the defender's deflection (42'). Red Devils on the attack and... Spurs celebration! The final stage had a United with ball possession over 70%. Trying to find spaces in front of a well-positioned Tottenham on their field, attempting counter-attacks and relying on a tireless Richarlison without the ball. Advertisement United only didn't celebrate at 68' thanks to Van de Ven saving on the line. Shortly after, Bruno Fernandes appeared alone in the box, but missed the target. Ruben Amorim ensured fresh legs in his attack. And Postecoglou - who didn't have the injured Madidson and Kulusevski - bet on Son, who wasn't 100% to start. United continued to be more present in the opponent's field. Almost got there at 96', but Vicario frustrated Zirkzee by making a great save. Ensuring a London celebration in Bilbao. United without European travel for 2025/2026 United and Tottenham put everything into this Wednesday's decision due to their dismal campaigns in the Premier League.
