Pitt County's history shared during ‘Gathering Voices' project

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — In an effort to educate and preserve the history of Pitt County, the Pitt County Human Relations Commission and the ECU Academic Library are partnering on the 'Gathering Voices' project. The project is a series of public listening sessions across Pitt County, where members of the community tell stories and revisit the county's history. One of the project's hearings were in Ayden on Tuesday night. While Greenville takes a lot of attention in Pitt County, Gathering Voices aims to show that small towns like Ayden, Winterville, and others are the foundation of what the county is today. 10-year-old found with no pulse, NY officials said. Mom's boyfriend sentenced

A 38-year-old man has been sentenced for fatally beating his girlfriend's 10-year-old son, New York officials said. In January 2021, Ayden Wolfe, 10, moved with his mom into the home of her boyfriend, Ryan Cato, according to an April 25 news release by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office. Wolfe was 'isolated from teachers' and was going to elementary school remotely because of the COVID-19 pandemic, officials said. Soon after moving in, Ayden was forced to hold weights above his head while Cato would punch him, film the abuse and send it to friends, officials said. In March 2021, Ayden's mother heard a 'loud bang,' and when ordering Cato to stop, he threatened her, officials said. Ayden's mom heard 'loud banging and thuds' again the following day and eventually called 911 before Cato took the phone from her, prosecutors said. When officers arrived, they found Ayden naked on the apartment's floor with no pulse, officials said. He was sent to Harlem Hospital, where he eventually died, officials said. The Medical Examiner's Office determined his cause of death was battered child syndrome as he had a lacerated spleen, a lacerated liver, broken ribs, bruises and hemorrhaging, among other injuries, officials said. In March, a jury convicted Cato of murder and endangering the welfare of a child, officials said. On April 25, he was sentenced to 25 years to life, officials said.

Notre Dame lands four-star safety whose brother once decommited from Fighting Irish

Notre Dame has bolstered its secondary for the 2026 college football season after it was confirmed it had landed four-star safety Ayden Pouncey. Pouncey, from Winter Park High School, Florida , announced he would be committing to Notre Dame on the back of two former Fighting Irish stars, Benjamin Morrison and Xavier Watts, being drafted on the second day of the 2025 NFL Draft. The 6-foot-3 safety opted to join Notre Dame amid interest from the likes of Alabama , Michigan , LSU Florida , Florida State and Penn State. However, in the end, Pouncy opted to commit to the Fighting Irish, who made the National Championship game earlier this year which they lost to Ohio State . "I didn't know about the area and I didn't think it would be a good fit, but it was a lot different than I thought it would be. That is why I wanted to get back for a second visit. I really liked it, so I wanted to make sure I got another look. "What makes them different is that, outside of football, the education is second to none. It is one of the best in the country and you can be set for life with that degree. At Notre Dame, you are not just developed on the field but off the field also." The newly signed Notre Dame safety isn't the only Pouncey the Fighting Irish have tried to bring to South Bend in the past either. Previously, the Fighting Irish nearly landed Ayden's older brother, wide receiver Jordan Pouncey, back in 2017. While he was committed to Notre Dame, he opted to decommit following the 2026 season, which saw Notre Dame finish 4-8. In the end, he opted to sign with Texas , before transferring to Florida. They also had an offer out for Ethan Pouncey, a 2020 class cornerback, who ended up choosing to sign with Florida. He ended up transferring to Georgia Southern, where he will play out his senior season. However, the youngest of the three, Ayden, will be heading to South Bend to start his college career. And the 2026 commit admitted he is a big fan of both head coach Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame cornerbacks coach Mike Mickens. "I like Coach [Mike] Mickens a lot," Pouncey recently said of the pair. "We went over the fit and the specifics on how they would coach me. That was cool. Coach [Marcus] Freeman is a player's coach and I love that. He treats all of his players the same. Notre Dame has a great tradition too; it is a good school, a good place and the players all want the same thing."

For beating 10-year-old Harlem boy to death, man gets 25 years to life

A judge sentenced Ryan Cato to 25 years to life in state prison Friday for brutally beating his girlfriend's 10-year-old son to death, hitting the little boy so hard that his internal organs ruptured. Cato was found guilty last month of murder in the March 6, 2021, death of Ayden Wolfe, who was found naked with bruises across his body, broken ribs and lacerations to his spleen, liver and kidneys. 'Isolated from teachers and other responsible adults because of the pandemic, 10-year-old Ayden Wolfe was enduring horrific violence at the hands of his mother's boyfriend,' Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said in a statement. 'Ryan Cato brutally abused him, eventually killing Ayden in his own apartment. While today's sentencing will not bring back this innocent child, I hope it gives his loved ones a sense of comfort and closure in this abhorrent crime.' The abuse started in January 2021, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, shortly after Cato moved in with the boy's mother at their W. 131st St. apartment in Harlem, prosecutors said during the trial. Cato would make Ayden hold weights above his head while Cato punched him, according to court documents. The boy's father, Darnell Wolfe, and neighbors and loved ones, speaking to the Daily News in 2021 after Ayden's death, described him as a bright, tech-savvy child, wise beyond his years. He had been attending school remotely due to the pandemic and had not interacted with teachers, counselors or school nurses in months, jurors heard during the trial. The jury heard from Ayden's mother, Aquisha Johnson, who cooperated with the prosecution against Cato. She previously pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide in connection to her son's killing. She admitted to sometimes hitting the boy with a belt and forcing him to hold weights as 'discipline,' and said the abuse he suffered at her boyfriend's hands became more severe over time, to the point Cato would 'fight' the child as forcefully as he would hit a grown man, jurors heard. Prosecutors told jurors that the beatings that ultimately killed little Ayden began the day before his death. A doctor from the city Medical Examiner's Office said that a piece of the boy's liver broke off inside his abdomen and the casing of his kidney had begun to come off, like the peel of an orange. The M.E. ruled that the boy had died from battered child syndrome. The child had multiple injuries to his ribs in various states of healing, serving as further evidence of a prolonged period of abuse, Assistant D.A. Jonathon Junig said. 'It looks like he a was hit by a train, but this is from the defendant pummeling him over and over again,' the prosecutor said during the trial, pointing to disturbing photos taken during the boy's autopsy. 'If this isn't depraved, what is?'
